This is the first record on the invasion of the Neotropical brown stink bug, Euschistus heros (F.) in Paraná County (latitude 31º 51' 9.6" S, longitude 60º 32' 11.2" W), Entre Ríos province, Argentina. Five adults were intercepted in 2009/2010, one in crop residues and four on soybean fields. The expanding range in the distribution of E. heros in the Southern Hemisphere is believed to be due to the increased commercial trade among countries, increase in the area cultivated with soybean, and the adoption of no-tillage cropping systems. |

The effect of constant temperatures on the development time from first instar to adult emergence was studied in Culex eduardoi Casal & García reared at 7, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 or 33°C. Data were adjusted to the linear degree-day model and the nonlinear Briére model. According to the linear model, the development time was inversely related to the rearing temperatures between 7°C and 25°C. Maximum mortality (100%) was recorded at temperatures > 30°C. According to the linear model, the development threshold temperature and thermal constant were 5.7°C and 188.8 degree days, respectively. The lower and upper threshold temperatures and the optimum temperature for the nonlinear model were -2.3, 30.0 and 28.1°C, respectively. |

Under certain environmental conditions, several species of grasshoppers inhabiting rangeland areas (e.g., inter-valleys) of the Chilean transitional desert can irrupt demographically. One of them is Elasmoderus wagenknechti (Liebermann), an endemic species. We studied two outbreaks occurred in 1996 and 1999. The objectives of the research were to (i) estimate some demographic parameters associated with the aforementioned events, and (ii) compare between them the population parameters. The parameters we studied were density (ind/m²), sexual proportion, female fertility (i.e., eggs/female), and the relationship eggs/female versus female size. Density (ind/m²) ranged from 0.2 to 0.4 in 1996 and from 0.5 to 0.6 in 1999. ANOVA-tests registered differences in... |

During March 2000, nymphs and adults of the cyrtocorid bugs Cyrtocoris egeris Packauskas & Schaefer and C. trigonus (Germar) were observed on two different plants at two different localities. In Brazil (Londrina, Paraná State) adult C. trigonus were found feeding on stems of the weed plant arrow leaf sida, Sida rhombifolia L. (Malvaceae). Despite egg deposition in the laboratory, nymphs did not develop on this plant. In Argentina (Reconquista, Santa Fé Province), nymphs and adults of C. egeris were observed feeding on immature soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] pods. Under laboratory conditions, nymphs of neither species could be reared beyond the third instar. |

The prey of 132 species of Bembicini (Hymenoptera) that have been studied is reviewed. About three quarters of the species prey on Diptera, and it is believed that fly predation is ancestral in the group. Eleven species make occasional or regular use of other insects as prey in addition to Diptera (Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, Neuroptera, Odonata, and/or Homoptera), while 21 species of five genera prey on insects of these same five groups with no use of Diptera. It is hypothesized that this represents an evolutionary progression, whereby populations have experienced shortages of dipterous prey in the past and have broadened their sensory focusing to include other groups of flying insects. Behavior initially learned has, over time, been reinforced genetically... |
