Identification of QTLs for pod and kernel traits in cultivated peanut by bulked segregant analysis Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Gomez Selvaraj,Michael; Narayana,Manivannan; Schubert,A. Michael; Ayers,Jamie L; Baring,Michael R; Burow,Mark D.
Bulked segregant analysis was used to identify simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with pod and kernel traits in cultivated peanut, to permit rapid selection of superior quality genotypes in the breeding program. SSR markers linked to pod and kernel traits were identified in two DNA pools (high and low), which were established using selected F2:6 recombinant individuals resulting from a cultivated cross between a runner (Tamrun OL01) and a Spanish (BSS 56) peanut. To identify quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for pod and kernel-related traits, parents were screened initially with 112 SSR primer pairs. The survey revealed 8.9% polymorphism between parents. Of ten SSR primer pairs distinguishing the parents, five (PM375, PM36, PM45, pPGPseq8D9, and...

INFLUENCE OF OPERATIONAL CONDITIONS OF MECHANIZED HARVESTING ON SUGARCANE LOSSES AND IMPURITIES REA
Martins,Murilo B.; Ruiz,Daniel.
ABSTRACT Operational conditions of mechanized harvesting can affect the quality of harvested sugarcane. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the influence of the displacement speed and cutting height on the quality of the raw material during the mechanized harvest of sugarcane. Vegetable losses were accounted for in the field by manual collection of the fractions left after harvest. Vegetable and mineral impurities were determined at the processing stage in the laboratory. Both the displacement speed and cutting height did not affect vegetable losses. However, the increase in vegetal impurities occurred at higher displacement speeds, whereas lower cutting heights resulted in higher amounts of mineral impurities.

EFFECT OF DRYING KINETICS ON COLOR OF “DEDO DE MOÇA” CHILI PEPPERS (Capsicum baccatum) REA
Andrade,Ednilton T. de; Figueira,Vitor G.; Teixeira,Luciana P.; Martinazzo,Ana Paula; Araujo,Kátia G. de L..
ABSTRACT This study aimed to assess the drying kinetics of red and yellow chili peppers, “dedo-de-moça” variety, at different temperatures (35, 45, 55, and 70 °C) and model this phenomenon mathematically. We also evaluated the effect of these drying air temperatures on pepper fruit color. Pepper fruits were dried in a forced-air circulation dryer. Ten mathematical models were fitted to the experimental data by nonlinear regression analysis. After drying, pepper samples were analyzed for the following colorimetric parameters: lightness (L*), chroma or saturation (c), and hue angle (h), in order to determine the influence of drying air temperature on fruit coloration. Our findings showed that the higher the air temperature, the faster the drying process....

AN INDEX TO EVALUATE THE ACCEPTANCE OF SPECIALTY COFFEES IN CONSUMER GROUPS REA
Resende,Mariana; Cirillo,Marcelo Â.; Borém,Flávio M..
ABSTRACT Numerous factors are related to the individual sensory perception of consumers, which makes it impossible to adapt a model that explains their behavior. In this context and given the scarcity of statistical indexes that evaluate preferences for specialty coffees, new statistical methods should be studied. To this end, our study aimed to create an index that measures the acceptance of specialty coffees. The index was built considering the fit of regression models as a function of principal component scores. Validation was done by significance tests, whose probabilities were obtained by bootstrapping, considering the main measures used in diagnosing outliers as weights, with application to real data from different consumer groups. The coffee...

Nutritional properties of cherry tomatoes harvested at different times and grown in an organic cropping Horticultura Brasileira
Pinho,Lucinéia de; Almeida,Anna Christina; Costa,Cândido A; Paes,Maria Cristina D; Glória,Maria Beatriz A; Souza,Rogério Marcos.
The physicochemical characteristics of the cherry tomato cultivated in organic and conventional production systems and harvested at either 30 or 45 days of cropping were evaluated using a randomized, 2x2 factorial design (2 cropping systems x 2 harvesting times) with five repetitions. The parameters analyzed were color, centesimal composition, total energetic value, carotenoids and bioactive amine content. Tomatoes harvested at 30 days had higher total soluble solid (TSS) content when grown conventionally, but when harvested at 45 days, both conventional and organic tomatoes had similar TSS values, probably due to increased N availability in the soil. Organic cherry tomatoes had higher contents of β-carotene, lycopene and bioactive amine. On the other...
