Evaluation of the spoilage potential of bacteria isolated from spoiled cooked whole tropical shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) stored under modified atmosphere packaging ArchiMer
Mace, Sabrina; Cardinal, Mireille; Jaffres, Emmanuel; Cornet, Josiane; Lalanne, Valerie; Chevalier, Frederique; Serot, Thierry; Pilet, Marie-france; Dousset, Xavier; Joffraud, Jean-jacques.
The spoilage potential of isolates belonging to five bacterial groups/species (Shewanella baltica, Carnobacterium maltaromaticum, Aeromonas salmonicida, Vibrio sp., “other Gamma-Proteobacteria” [containing one strain of Pseudoalteromonas sp. and one strain of Psychrobacter sp.]) isolated from spoiled cooked and whole tropical shrimp stored under modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) was evaluated by inoculation into ionized cooked and peeled tropical shrimp followed by storage for 32 days at 8°C. Microbial growth and sensory changes were monitored during the storage period. The major spoilage bacterial isolate groups were C. maltaromaticum and S. baltica. In order to characterize their spoilage potential further and to study the effect of their interactions,...

Evidence for a three-phase sequence during Heinrich Stadial 4 using a multiproxy approach based on Greenland ice core records ArchiMer
Guillevic, M.; Bazin, L.; Landais, A.; Stowasser, C.; Masson-delmotte, V.; Blunier, T.; Eynaud, F.; Falourd, S.; Michel, E.; Minster, B.; Popp, T.; Prie, F.; Vinther, M..
Glacial climate was characterised by two types of abrupt events. Greenland ice cores record Dansgaard–Oeschger events, marked by abrupt warming in-between cold, stadial phases. Six of these stadials appear related to major Heinrich events (HEs), identified from ice-rafted debris (IRD) and large excursions in carbon- and oxygen-stable isotopic ratios in North Atlantic deep sea sediments, documenting major ice sheet collapse events. This finding has led to the paradigm that glacial cold events are induced by the response of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation to such massive freshwater inputs, supported by sensitivity studies conducted with climate models of various complexities. These models also simulate synchronous Greenland temperature and...

Statistical processing of West Africa wave directional spectra time-series into a climatology of swell events ArchiMer
Olagnon, Michel; Kpogo-nuwoklo, Komlan; Guede, Zakoua.
Accurate estimation of long-term sea conditions is a major issue for the design of coastal and offshore structures, for the preparation of marine operations, and for other applications such as marine energy, and coastal erosion. It requires, on the one hand, proper parametric models of the sea state spectra and the statistics of the parameters, and on the other hand, representations of their time evolutions. In some locations such as West Africa, sea conditions are complex with wave spectra showing many well separated peaks corresponding to several swells and wind sea. The present study focuses on swell at a West Africa location. First, a time-consistent triangular model is assessed for the spectral shapes of the swell components. Then statistical analysis...

Climate variability and ice-sheet dynamics during the last three glaciations ArchiMer
Obrochta, Stephen P.; Crowley, Thomas J.; Channell, James E. T.; Hodell, David A.; Baker, Paul A.; Seki, Arisa; Yokoyama, Yusuke.
A composite North Atlantic record from DSDP Site 609 and IODP Site U1308 spans the past 300,000 years and shows that variability within the penultimate glaciation differed substantially from that of the surrounding two glaciations. Hematite-stained grains exhibit similar repetitive down-core variations within the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 8 and 4-2 intervals, but little cyclic variability within the MIS 6 section. There is also no petrologic evidence, in terms of detrital carbonate-rich (Heinrich) layers, for surging of the Laurentide Ice Sheet through the Hudson Strait during MIS 6. Rather, very high background concentration of iceberg-rafted debris (IRD) indicates near continuous glacial meltwater input that likely increased thermohaline disruption...

Modélisation 0D des efflorescences d'Alexandrium en rade de Brest en compétition inter-spécifique ArchiMer
Le Gland, Guillaume.
Since 2010, planktonic algae Alexandrium minutum, cause of the PSP (Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning) syndrome, has been proliferating in early summer in the bay of Daoulas, within the roadstead of Brest. During this internship, a model has been designed in order to derive these blooms from physical parameters (temperature, irradiance, nutrient supply, dilution rate …). In the model, A.minutum competes with 50 other plankton species with randomly attributed optimal temperature and nutrient uptake abilities. It turns out to reproduce well the bloom of 2012, with a correct date of maximum concentration and a relevant order of magnitude. It reproduces the order of magnitude of 2013 concentrations, but the bloom then is too spread in time around the maximum....

Late Quaternary climatic changes revealed by luminescence dating, mineral magnetism and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy of river terrace palaeosols: a new form of geoproxy data for the southern African interior ArchiMer
Lyons, Richard; Tooth, Stephen; Duller, Geoff A. T..
The nature, spatial patterns and forcing mechanisms of Quaternary climatic changes across southern Africa remain unresolved and contentious, principally due to the scarcity of continuous and robustly-dated proxy records. We present what we interpret to be a broadly continuous record of late Quaternary climatic change based on optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating, and mineral magnetic and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) analyses of stacked palaeosols within an overbank alluvial succession along the Modder River, central South Africa. The OSL ages indicate that alluvial sedimentation occurred at a fairly steady rate, averaging similar to 0.15 mm/yr from at least 44 ka until similar to 0.83 ka. This suggests that the palaeosols are...

Dual transcriptomics of virus-host interactions: comparing two Pacific oyster families presenting contrasted susceptibility to ostreid herpesvirus 1 ArchiMer
Segarra, Amelie; Mauduit, Florian; Faury, Nicole; Trancart, Suzanne; Degremont, Lionel; Tourbiez, Delphine; Haffner, Philippe; Barbosa-solomieu, Valerie; Pepin, Jean-francois; Travers, Marie-agnes; Renault, Tristan.
Background: Massive mortality outbreaks affecting Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) spat in various countries have been associated with the detection of a herpesvirus called ostreid herpesvirus type 1 (OsHV-1). However, few studies have been performed to understand and follow viral gene expression, as it has been done in vertebrate herpesviruses. In this work, experimental infection trials of C. gigas spat with OsHV-1 were conducted in order to test the susceptibility of several bi-parental oyster families to this virus and to analyze host-pathogen interactions using in vivo transcriptomic approaches. Results: The divergent response of these oyster families in terms of mortality confirmed that susceptibility to OsHV-1 infection has a significant...

Underwater video techniques for observing coastal marine biodiversity: A review of sixty years of publications (1952–2012) ArchiMer
Mallet, Delphine; Pelletier, Dominique.
Underwater video techniques are increasingly used in marine ecology studies. Technological progress regarding video cameras, sensors (such as sounders), battery life and information storage make these techniques now accessible to a majority of users. However, diver-based underwater visual censuses, and catch and effort data, remain the most commonly used for observing coastal biodiversity and species. In this paper, we review the underwater video techniques that have been developed since the 1950s to investigate and/or monitor coastal biodiversity. Techniques such as remote underwater video, whether baited or not, diver-operated video and towed video are described, along with corresponding applications in the field. We then analyse the complementary of...

No net loss of biodiversity or paper offsets? A critical review of the French no net loss policy ArchiMer
Quetier, Fabien; Regnery, Baptiste; Levrel, Harold.
French regulations concerning the mitigation of development impacts have been progressively strengthened with offsets now required for impacts on forests, wetlands, and protected species, among others. In 2012, following a national consultative process called Grenelle de l’Environnement, legal requirements in terms of monitoring and effective implementation of measures aimed at avoiding, reducing and offsetting impacts were strengthened. This has created strong “demand” for offsets. The workability of these new requirements has come under scrutiny, not least because of their strong legal and financial implications for developers. In this context, official government guidance on implementing the mitigation hierarchy was published in 2012. Under this...

Suivi des espèces envahissantes marines à Saint-Pierre et Miquelon. Année 2013 ArchiMer
Sellier, Marion; Poitevin, Pierre; Goraguer, Herle; Faure, Jean-marie; Goulletquer, Philippe.
This work, conducted in 2013 , is a first monitoring of marine invasive species in Saint-Pierre and Miquelon archipelago. In global changing context on coastal ecosystems , accentuated by direct or indirect effects of human activities, it became essential to implement a survey on marine invasive species on Saint-Pierre and Miquelon shoreline. Fukui traps and tunicates collectors implemented on different stations as well as the timely completion of observational dives , have established the following conclusions : several non native species were detected within the local marine ecosystem. This species , such as Carcinus maenas , Ciona intestinalis , Botryllus schlosseri , Caprella mutica , etc. ... threaten some local marine ecosystems and some local...

Characterization of the Secretomes of Two Vibrios Pathogenic to Mollusks ArchiMer
Madec, Stephanie; Pichereau, Vianney; Jacq, Annick; Paillard, Mathieu; Boisset, Claire; Guerard, Fabienne; Paillard, Christine; Nicolas, Jean-louis.
Vibrio tapetis causes the brown ring disease in the Japanese clam Ruditapes philippinarum while Vibrio aestuarianus is associated with massive oyster mortalities. As extracellular proteins are often associated with the virulence of pathogenic bacteria, we undertook a proteomic approach to characterize the secretomes of both vibrios. The extracellular proteins (ECPs) of both species were fractionated by SEC-FPLC and in vitro assays were performed to measure the effects of each fraction on hemocyte cellular parameters (phagocytosis and adhesion). Fractions showing a significant effect were subjected to SDS-PAGE, and proteins were identified by nano LC-MS/MS. 45 proteins were identified for V. aestuarianus and 87 for V. tapetis. Most of them belonged to outer...

Comparison of 240 ka long organic carbon and carbonate records along a depth transect in the Timor Sea: Primary signals versus preservation changes ArchiMer
Liu, Wei; Baudin, Francois; Moreno, Eva; Dewilde, Fabien; Caillon, Nicolas; Fang, Nianqiao; Bassinot, Franck.
Total organic carbon (TOC) and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) records from different water depths in the Timor Sea (NE Indian Ocean) are compared in order to better reconstruct past changes in pelagic productivity, highlight the impact of preservation at depth, and unravel the interplay of organic carbon and carbonate sedimentation. New data are presented for core MD01-2376 located at 2376 m depth. These results are compared, over the last 240 ka, with published data on two neighboring cores (MD01-2378, 1783 m and MD98-2166, 3875 m). TOC fluctuations show strong glacial/interglacial variations and Milankovitch-type oscillations (i.e., dominant frequencies centered on the 100, 41, and 23 ka bands), with an enrichment during cold periods that reflects an increase...

Estimation des échanges entre la mer et la lagune de Biguglia : Utilisation de la méthode d’estimation des volumes d’eau échangés entre la mer et les lagunes par différence de hauteurs d’eau. ArchiMer
Tunin-ley, Alina; Malet, Nathalie; Fiandrino, Annie; Orsoni, Valerie; Baldi, Yoann.
