Using consumer concerns as the main criteria of assessment, the objective of the Concerted Action was to provide recommendations to participants on the chain of production, distribution and consumption in regard to improving the safety and quality of certified organic food products.

Some may view indigenous communities as being conservative and backwards. However, the Kabekwa in Costa Rica show that such communities can be adaptable and innovative. In response to changing circumstances, this community has been adapting its farming practices constantly, benefiting from it in multiple ways. In this case study we show some of the additional advantages agro-ecology provides to farmers beside food. Using the concept of meaningful work we explore how knowledge-intensive farming stimulates the development of skills, improves self-determination and provides incentives for younger generations to work on the land.

This synergistic outcome builds on species differences in physiology and morphology. Mastitis is one of the most important diseases in organic dairy farming. Therefore, it was the aim of this study to investigate the influence of stage of lactation and parity on mastitis risk in organic dairy cows. 43 German organic farms with German Holstein cows were selected via a questionnaire. These farms are being visited approximately every three months since 2005. Minimum herd size is 30 cows, and annual milk yield averages 6,277 kg/cow (min=3,175; max=9,653). During the farm visits, mastitis cases and treatments were extracted from farm records and data were processed using InterHerd©. Biopores have been shown to be enriched with plant available nutrients as compared to the surrounding bulk soil and therefore are considered hot spots for the nutrient acquisition especially in the otherwise nutrient-poor subsoil. As a result of colonization of biopores by earthworms, pore walls are enriched with nutrients. In this study, a first attempt was made to assess the influence of earthworm abundance on both structural pore wall characteristics as assessed with in situ endoscopy and on pore wall C and N contents. Par rapport aux hybrides d’engraissement Hubbard JA 757 (HUB), les poulets mâles des génotypes Lohmann Braun (LB) et Lohmann Selected Leghorn (LSL) présentent une moins bonne performance d’engraissement. Rogge als ‘graasgraan’ levert smakelijk gewas

Grasklaverpercelen in de huiskavel verliezen na verloop van tijd aan productiviteit door de daling van het klaveraandeel. Herinzaai van het weideperceel dringt zich dan op. Een tussenteelt graan vóór herinzaai is dan meestal voordelig voor de klaverontwikkeling. Als de huiskavel beperkt is en we voldoende weidegang voor het melkvee willen behouden is het begrazen van het graangewas een optie. Op een biologisch melkveebedrijf werd winterrogge en Japanse haver in het voorjaar uitgezaaid en begraasd als ‘graasgraan’. De rogge leverde een smakelijk gewas op met een goede opbrengst en een behoorlijke voederwaarde. Japanse haver als graasgraan was minder geslaagd door de beperkte hergroei na het grazen.
