Impacts of Regulating Greenhouse Gas Emissions on Livestock Trade Flows AgEcon
Kim, Hyun Seok; Koo, Won W..
The policies that regulate greenhouse gas emissions would provide a significant burden to emission industries as well as final consumers, which can lead to a strong influence on international trade flows of commodities. This study examines the impact of regulating greenhouse gas emissions on livestock trade flows using a commodity specific gravity model approach. This study finds that regulating greenhouse gas emissions has a negative effect on livestock trade flows from countries restricting greenhouse gas emissions to unrestricting countries, from restricting to restricting countries, and from unrestricting to restricting countries.

Alternative Specifications and Extensions of the Economic Threshold Concept and the Control of Livestock Pests AgEcon
Davis, Rex; Tisdell, Clement A..
Outlines economic threshold models developed by various authors as an aid to decision-making about pest management. Particular attention is given to the models proposed by Stern et al. (1959) and by Headley (1972) and the major differences in their concepts of the economic threshold. Limitations and scope for applying these models is discussed as well as differences in the extent of their applications are reviewed. After considering general issues in this respect, particular matters are given attention such as difficulties raised by complexities in the nature of yield loss function due to uncertainty in pest densities, the presence of multiple-pests, and the occurrence of pesticide resistance. An extension is provided for multiple species pest models to...

Market Analysis for Dried Distillers Grain in Indiana AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J..
The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry in Indiana has saturated the local market for the principal co-product, distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). In the near term, Indiana’s livestock industry can be expected to consume up to 895,000 tons of DDGS per year. But given production of 2.7 million tons, Indiana’s ethanol producers will rely on railroads and barges to ship excess production to out-of-state destinations. Livestock producers will have a ready access to DDGS across the state.

The Transformation of U.S. Livestock Agriculture: Scale, Efficiency, and Risks AgEcon
MacDonald, James M.; McBride, William D..
U.S. livestock production has shifted to much larger and more specialized farms, and the various stages of input provision, farm production, and processing are now much more tightly coordinated through formal contracts and shared ownership of assets. Important financial advantages have driven these structural changes, which in turn have boosted productivity growth in the livestock sector. But structural changes can also generate environmental and health risks for society, as industrialization concentrates animals and animal wastes in localized areas. This report relies on farm-level data to detail the nature, causes, and effects of structural changes in livestock production.

IMPACTOS DA ESTRUTURA EMPRESARIAL, AGRICULTURA E PECUÁRIA SOBRE O PIB PER CAPITA: UMA ABORDAGEM ESPACIAL NO ESTADO DO ACRE AgEcon
Silveira, Breno Carrillo; Silva, Rubicleis Gomes Da; Silveira, Aurilene Oliveira De Araujo.
Analiticamente, é utilizada a análise...

Animal husbandry in Africa: Climate change impacts and adaptations AgEcon
Seo, S. Niggol; Mendelsohn, Robert.
This paper uses a cross-sectional approach to analyze the impacts of climate change on animal husbandry and the way farmers adapt. The study is based on surveys of almost 5000 livestock farmers across ten countries in Africa. A traditional Ricardian regression finds that the livestock net revenues of large farms in Africa are more sensitive to temperature than those of small farms. Cross-sectional analysis also reveals that large farms (but not small farms) have fewer animals per farm in warmer places. Farmers tend to select beef cattle and chickens in cool climates and goats and sheep in hot climates. Using the Ricardian results and examining climate scenarios for 2060 and beyond, the net revenues of small farms are predicted to increase as much as 120%...

Prospects of Feed Crops in Malaysia AgEcon
Yahya, Tunku Mahmud Bin Tunku; Sukir, Sarmin Bin.
The study was initiated with the objectives of elucidating and analyzing potentials, weaknesses, opportunities, constraints and policy options in the development of feed crop farming with an emphasis on secondary crops in Southeast Asian developing countries. In Malaysia, feed crops currently not much to employment, income generation, import substitution and export promotion because the sub-sector is small. The scope of the study is limited to the dominant non-ruminant sector of the livestock industry. This sector, particularly poultry and swine, has not only experienced rapid growth but also produces more than is required for domestic consumption and thus exports to neighbouring countries.

Climate Change Policy and the Adoption of Methane Digesters on Livestock Operations AgEcon
Key, Nigel D.; Sneeringer, Stacy E..
Methane digesters—biogas recovery systems that use methane from manure to generate electricity—have not been widely adopted in the United States because costs have exceeded benefits to operators. Burning methane in a digester reduces greenhouse gas emissions from manure management. A policy or program that pays producers for these emission reductions—through a carbon offset market or directly with payments—could increase the number of livestock producers who would profit from adopting a methane digester. We developed an economic model that illustrates how dairy and hog operation size, location, and manure management methods, along with electricity and carbon prices, could influence methane digester profits. The model shows that a relatively moderate...

The Integration of Rural Households into Ruminant Livestock Industries in China AgEcon
Waldron, Scott A.; Brown, Colin G.; Longworth, John W..
A major determinant of rural development in China is the way by which rural households integrate with rural industries. Three forms of integration – market integration, vertical integration and integration through local groups – are investigated. Policy measures that may facilitate household integration, household specialisation and market segmentation are identified. Findings for the ruminant livestock sector are widely applicable to other agricultural industries in China.

MARKETING CHANNELS COMPETE FOR U.S. STOCKER CATTLE AgEcon
Schmitz, Troy G.; Moss, Charles B.; Schmitz, Andrew.
This study investigates the underlying reasons for a producer's choice of marketing channels for stocker cattle in the United States. In addition to traditional public auctions, private sales, video auctions, and Internet auctions have been recently used in the marketing of stocker cattle. Findings show that while the number of marketing options may have increased in recent years, only relatively large producers can actually take advantage of these options. The marketing options for smaller producers are still limited due to their relative size. Also, the number of cattle marketed privately and through video and Internet auctions is found to be positively correlated with herd size. In addition, the New Institutional Economics (NIE) provides insights into...

Human Resource Management in Beef Cattle Farms at Triangulo Mineiro Region AgEcon
Pereira, Mariana de Aragao; do Vale, Sonia Maria Leite Ribeiro; Mancio, Antonio Bento.
The marketing pressures for economically viable, socially fair and ecologically correct production systems have required the farmers to adopt new management practices, aiming to increase the production scale, improve the quality of the products, and reduce costs. The historical utilization of abundant, cheap and disqualified labor in the rural sector has been a barrier to the adoption of technology. This study is an attempt to describe the human resources management that have been used by beef cattle farmers, as well as to analyze the management performance in labor and technical areas during the 2000/2001 year. Three-hundred and twenty questionnaires were sent by mail to farmers in the Triangulo Mineiro region. All of them were registered in the Brazilian...
