Rapid growth and high fecundity of E. eugeniae makes it a commercial vermicomposting agent. The worm is also a rich protein source (50-70%CP) in livestock diets. The major question, however, is how do we promote earthworm production as a strategy for ecological livestock intensification and integration with crops through earthworm domestication as a source of protein and vermicompost. Ninety certified organic pineapple producers were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire in Luwero and Kayung districts in Uganda. Data was analysed using statistical package for Social Scientists (SPSS). Results indicated that most organic farmers (81.1%) kept mostly cattle in combination with others species (goats, pigs and chickens). There was no significant difference (P>0.05) in the numbers of pigs, poultry and chickens owned per farm in the two districts but there was significant difference (p=0.017) in the numbers of cattle. 62% of the farmers had indigenous breeds of cattle, 97.8% had goats, 87.5% had pigs and 100% of farmers had indigenous chickens. In Uganda, certified organic livestock production is almost non-existent yet livestock is an integral part of many organic farms. With the increasing global market for organic foods, farmers cannot afford to overlook the emerging opportunity for organic livestock production. A survey to understand farmers’ perceptions and experiences in dairy production was undertaken on 30 certified organic pineapple farms with dairy cattle using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results indicated that average age of respondents was 48 years with majority (53.3%) having attained the minimum primary education. Land tenure system was majorly customary (96.7%). Many East African smallholder farms with certified organic crop production, also rear animals. Although farming systems are mixed, there is often very little integration and synergy between the different enterprises. The aim of this article is to suggest and discuss different development scenarios for organic dairy production, based on data from three East African studies of dairy production at certified organic cash crop farms. A study was conducted in 2013 to assess opportunities and challenges of integrating dairy cattle into organic pineapple production in Uganda. Thirty organic pineapple farmers were interviewed using a semistructured questionnaire. The main dairy cattle management systems were tethering (73%) and zero grazing (27%). Average landholding was 1.74 ± 1.06 and 3.75 ± 2.70 ha for zero grazing and tethering systems, respectively. All farms were diversified with various livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, and chickens and crops including pineapples, maize, coffee, bananas, beans, sweet potatoes, and cassava.
