Influence of transplanter modifications and cover crop mulches on the production of summer vegetables in conservation tillage Organic Eprints
Campiglia, Enio; Mancinelli , Roberto; Radicetti, Emanuele; Ferrari, Francesco.
The aim of this poster is to develop a vegetable transplanter that is capable of working in no-tillage conditions and in presence of organic mulches which cover the soil. The following requirements should be considered for built a transplanter able to work in no-tillage conditions: - An adequate structure and implements that can transplant under the most challenging conditions; - The possibility of placing vegetable seedlings in areas with high amounts of residues without disturbing the soil more than necessary; - The creation of a furrow for proper seedling placement; - Being able to cover the vegetable root system with soil in presence of a superficial mulch layer.

Reduced Tillage Stubble Incorporation - Comparsion of Different Machine Types Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
The video, recorded at a machinery demonstration in Courfaivre (JU, Switzerland) in summer 2013, presents four different skim ploughs. The event was organized by the Fondation Rurale interjurassienne (FRI, Switzerland). Skim ploughs are particularly suitable for superficial stubble cultivation. Unlike a normal plough with skimmers, the soil is not fully ploughed, but peeled or scraped with vertically positioned shares. Through a support wheel, the depth can be adjusted continuously. To protect the soil, 10 cm should not be exceeded. With a normal plough, the soil is usually turned at a depth of 15 to 30 cm and the stubbles and weeds are buried. With the stubble plough the weeds and stubbles are cut off and largely exposed to the sun.

Dry anaerobic digestion of organic residues on-farm - a feasibility study Organic Eprints
Schäfer, Winfried; Lehto, Marja; Teye, Frederick.
Objectives The feasibility study shall answer the following questions: Are there economical and ecological advantages of on-farm dry digestion biogas plants? How the construction and operation parameters of a dry digestion biogas plant influence environment, profit, and sustainability of on-farm biogas production? The aim of the feasibility study is to provide facts and figures for decision makers in Finland to support the development of the economically and environmentally most promising biogas technology on-farm. The results may encourage on-farm biogas plant manufacturers to develop and market dry anaerobic digestion technology as a complementary technology. This technology may be a competitive alternative for farms using a dry manure chain or even...

Vereinfachte Berechnung der Grauen Energie in Gebäuden Organic Eprints
Koesling, Matthias; Fystro, Gustav; Ruge, Gesa; Hansen, Sissel.
A simple building component framework for agricultural buildings has been adapted to estimate their embodied energy. Based on the results from a case study of 20 dairy farms in Norway we conclude that the amount of embodied energy in buildings is a variable but notable component and highlight the important factors for this variation. This research advances knowledge and practice of embodied energy calculations for existing farm buildings. The findings advance overall energy consumption and future planning of farming buildings and businesses.

Hansen, Martin N.; Mortensen, Henrik S.; Sørensen, Karsten.

Cultivation methods in organic farming are controversial discussed as the traditional ploughing system faces a variety of disadvantages, especially with regard to soil con-servation. To address these problems a mound cultivation system has been devel-oped. This paper presents a case study (on-farm-research) combined with expert interviews and economic modelling results. The aims of the study are to identify the most important cost driver, to calculate the cost of mound cultivation with regard to energy consumption and labour costs and to formulate conditions where this system is economically viable. Experience from on-farm-research and modelling show that the system is in particular suitable for large farms where the field labour organisation is a...

Reduced Tillage: Farmers' Motivations and Problems Organic Eprints
Alföldi, Thomas.
The TILMAN-ORG consortium presents the first results of a survey on organic farmers' motivations and problems related to reduced tillage at the 7th Organic Producers Conference in Birmingham, UK. At the European scale weed control and destroying previous cover crops appeared to be the biggest challenges in practice. But farmers interviewed at the conference said that weed control is not the main problem in the UK. In fact, under the wet conditions in the UK, organic farmers find destroying grass-ley without using the plough a bigger challenge. As minimum tillage is in its infancy in the UK, the farmers really appreciated the coordinated research of TILMAN-ORG.

Labour and machinery systems in organic farming Organic Eprints
Sørensen, C.G.; Nielsen, V..
In order to analyse and evaluate the future development of organic farming in Denmark efforts are needed to extend and improve the data on labour and machinery input. Previous investigations have not been able, in a uniquely way, to describe the labour requirement related to factors like farm type, type of production, level of mechanisation, etc. Existing modelling approaches on labour demand and machinery input, used for conventional farms, has only been scarcely used on organic farming systems. There is a need for a systematic analysis of the technical operational consequences and subsequent prognosis of the labour requirement, capacity, and labour profiles for specific organic production systems, including the evaluation of innovative cropping and...

Kosten der Belüftungsheuerzeugung in Boxen oder Ballen Organic Eprints
Nilles, Lisa; Klöble, Ulrike.
The production of ventilated barn hay results in a high quality fodder for ruminants. Nevertheless, this production method is still a niche in Germany even it is found in organic farming. Reasons are the few publications about required investments of the needed technology for hay drying in the barn. This article provides investment and energy costs for different drying techniques: for box hay drying three different farm sizes were compared, for bale hay drying only one farm size is calculated. Bale hay drying demands more power and investment cost as box hay drying of loose hay. Bale drying is more complicated than barn drying in that the number of bale drying locations in a barn is a limiting factor to throughput, as is also the drying of densely...

Strategi for økt matproduksjon i Rauma kommune Organic Eprints
Bergslid, Ildri (Rose) Kristine.
