Combining ability analysis for grain filling duration and yield traits in spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell.) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Kamaluddin,; Singh,Rishi M.; Prasad,Lal C.; Abdin,Malik Z.; Joshi,Arun K..
A diallel analysis of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. em. Thell) parents (n = 11) and their F1 (n = 55) and F2 (n = 55) offspring was carried out for the following four traits: grain filling duration (GFD), GFD for growing degree days (GDD), 1000 seed weight and seed yield per plant. Analysis of variance for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) displayed significant F1 and F2 general and specific combining ability effects for the four traits studied. For all the traits the GCA effects were relatively more important than the SCA effects, indicating that additive genetic effects were predominant. Crosses displaying high SCA effects for grain filling duration, seed weight and yield were observed to be derived from parents having...

Diallel analysis of fruit set in Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg. Genet. Mol. Biol.
Omokhafe,Kenneth O.; Akpobome,Frederick A.; Nasiru,Ibrahim.
The clonal and inter-clonal combining ability of fruit set in a Hevea brasiliensis four-parent diallel mating was evaluated using a randomized complete block experimental design with three replicates. Twelve main and reciprocal crosses were hand pollinated and percentage fruit set was recorded. The raw data were subjected to an arc-sine transformation for analysis of variance, and general and specific combining ability. There was significant variation of each of fruit set for the various crosses, general combining ability and reciprocal effect. The breeding implications of these results are also discussed.

Analysis of general and specific combining abilities of popcorn populations, including selfed parents Genet. Mol. Biol.
Viana,José Marcelo Soriano; Matta,Frederico de Pina.
Estimation of general and specific combining ability effects in a diallel analysis of cross-pollinating populations, including the selfed parents, is presented in this work. The restrictions considered satisfy the parametric values of the GCA and SCA effects. The method is extended to self-pollinating populations (suitable for other species, without the selfed parents). The analysis of changes in population means due to inbreeding (sensitivity to inbreeding) also permits to assess the predominant direction of dominance deviations and the relative genetic variability in each parent population. The methodology was used to select popcorn populations for intra- and inter-population breeding programs and for hybrid production, developed at the Federal...

Partial diallel and potential of super sweet corn inbred lines bt 2 to obtain hybrids Horticultura Brasileira
Xavier,Larissa Fernanda S; Pestana,Jéssica Kelly; Sekiya,Alline; Krause,Matheus D; Moreira,Rosângela Maria P; Ferreira,Josué M.
ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to determine the potential of S4 super sweet corn inbred lines for hybrid synthesis, identify the predominant types of gene action and correlations among different traits, significant for breeding programs. The 81 hybrids obtained from a partial diallel 9x9 and three checks were evaluated. A complete randomized block design, with three replicates, and two sowing seasons was used. We could notice significant hybrid effects, general combining ability (GCA) of GI and GII groups and specific combining ability (SCA) in relation to evaluated traits, highlighting the existence of hybrids with superior performance and the expression of additive and non-additive effects. The inbred lines: L1, L3, L6 and L9 (GI) and L1’, L7’ and...

Morphological, pedigree, and molecular distances and their association with hybrid wheat performance PAB
Bertan,Ivandro; Carvalho,Fernando Irajá Félix de; Oliveira,Antonio Costa de; Benin,Giovani; Vieira,Eduardo Alano; Valério,Igor Pirez.
The objectives of this work were to estimate the genetic distance among wheat genotypes using morphological, pedigree, molecular, and combined morphological and molecular measures, to determine the correlations between these measures, and to evaluate the combining ability of the genotypes. Three generations and two planting designs were studied. Six wheat genotypes were crossed using a diallel design. The F1, F2 and F3generations were evaluated in the field, in the crop seasons of 2003, 2004 and 2005, under spaced plant and full-row planting designs. The estimated general and specific combining abilities of tested hybrids were influenced both by the generation and the planting design. The correlation coefficients among the distance measures and between...

Genetic control of grain yield and nitrogen use efficiency in tropical maize PAB
Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Eckert,Fernando Roberto; Mantovani,Éder Eduardo; Lima,Rodrigo Oliveira; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira.
The objectives of this work were to study the genetic control of grain yield (GY) and nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE, grain yield/N applied) and its primary components, N uptake efficiency (NUpE, N uptake/N applied) and N utilization efficiency (NUtE, grain yield/N uptake), in maize grown in environments with high and low N availability. Experiments with 31 maize genotypes (28 hybrid crosses and three controls) were carried out in soils with high and low N rates, in the southeast of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. There was a reduction of 23.2% in average GY for maize grown in soil with low N, in comparison to that obtained with high N. There were 26.5, 199 and 400% increases in NUtE, NUpE, and NUE, respectively, for maize grown with low N. The...

Diallel analysis for frogeye leaf spot resistance in soybean PAB
Gravina,Geraldo de Amaral; Sediyama,Carlos Sigueyuki; Martins Filho,Sebastião; Moreira,Maurílio Alves; Barros,Everaldo Gonçalves de.
Seven soybean cultivars (Bossier, Cristalina, Davis, Kent, Lincoln, Paraná and Uberaba), with different levels of resistance to Cercospora sojina, were crossed in a diallel design to determine the general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities relative to the inheritance of the resistance. Race 04 of the fungus was inoculated in the parents and in the 21 F1 hybrids in a greenhouse in a completely randomized design, with 12 replications. The reactions to the disease were evaluated 20 days after the inoculation, always on the most infected leaflet. Both GCA and SCA were significant for all the evaluated characters, being inferred that, for the expression of the characters, the additive, dominant and, possibly, epistatic genic actions were important....

Combining ability of flint corn inbred lines: Mal de Río Cuarto disease tolerance and grain yield Phyton
Borghi,ML; Ibañez,MA; Bonamico,NC; Kandus,MV; Almorza Gomar,D; Guillin,EA; Salerno,JC; Di Renzo,MA.
Mal de Río Cuarto (MRC) disease is a significant threat to corn production in Argentina. Sixty six hybrid combinations derived from the cross of twelve flint maize (Zea mays L) inbred lines were evaluated using a completely randomized block design with two replications. MRC disease severity grade (SG) and grain yield (GY) were the analyzed traits. Our objectives were to estimate the general (GCA) and specific (SCA) combining abilities for these traits among twelve corn inbred lines, and to identify potential heterotic relationships among them. Diallel crosses were performed and these results were compared using Griffing's method 2 model I and diallel GGE biplot (genotype main effect plus genotype x environment interaction). Highly significant effects for...

Combining ability of maize inbred lines evaluated in three environments in Brazil Scientia Agricola
Nass,Luciano Lourenço; Lima,Marlene; Vencovsky,Roland; Gallo,Paulo Boller.
For tropical areas like Brazil, genotype x environment interaction is an important source of variation. Our objectives were to examine the combining abilities and their interaction with environments in ten selected maize (Zea mays L.) inbred lines in diallel crosses and to identify candidates for promising hybrid combinations. Crosses and checks were evaluated through a 7 x 7 triple lattice design at three locations during the 1984/85 season. Several agronomic traits were evaluated, but here only data on ear yield are discussed. Yield data were adjusted for stand variation (correction to 50 plants per plot) and grain moisture (15.5%). Data for ear yield were analysed using an adaptation of Griffing’s method IV for complete diallel crosses, and experiments...
