Analysis of quantitative traits using regression and log-linear modeling when phase is unknown AgEcon
Mander, Adrian P..
This function models the relationship between quantitative trait and the genotype of a person. It introduces a new syntax for model specification, which is necessary because when phase is unknown, the explanatory variables for the linear regression are never observed. The data must be a population-based sample because within family effects are not modeled.

Factors affecting the use of forward pricing methods in price risk management with special reference to the influence of risk aversion AgEcon
Jordaan, Henry; Grove, Bennie.
Risk aversion is the primary reason for farmers to use forward pricing methods to hedge against price risk. Previous international research on farmers’ forward pricing behaviour found inconsistent results with respect to the relationship between risk aversion and the use of forward pricing methods. Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression is used in this research to investigate the relationship between the proportion of maize Vaalharts maize producers are willing to forward price and risk aversion. The quantity decision is modelled conditional on the adoption decision to ensure that the modelling procedure does not force the same variables to influence the two decisions in the same way. Regression results showed that more risk averse farmers are forward...

Selecting statistical models to study the relationship between soybean yield and soil physical properties Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Oliveira,Marcio Paulo de; Tavares,Maria Hermínia Ferreira; Uribe-Opazo,Miguel Angel; Timm,Luis Carlos.
Statistical models allow the representation of data sets and the estimation and/or prediction of the behavior of a given variable through its interaction with the other variables involved in a phenomenon. Among other different statistical models, are the autoregressive state-space models (ARSS) and the linear regression models (LR), which allow the quantification of the relationships among soil-plant-atmosphere system variables. To compare the quality of the ARSS and LR models for the modeling of the relationships between soybean yield and soil physical properties, Akaike's Information Criterion, which provides a coefficient for the selection of the best model, was used in this study. The data sets were sampled in a Rhodic Acrudox soil, along a spatial...

Fitting a taper function to minimize the sum of absolute deviations Scientia Agricola
Silva,Lana Mirian Santos da; Rodriguez,Luiz Carlos Estraviz; Caixeta Filho,José Vicente; Bauch,Simone Carolina.
Multiple product inventories of forests require accurate estimates of the diameter, length and volume of each product. Taper functions have been used to precisely describe tree form, once they provide estimates for the diameter at any height or the height at any diameter. This study applied a goal programming technique to estimate the parameters of two taper functions to describe individual tree forms. The goal programming formulation generates parameters that minimize total absolute deviations (MOTAD). These parameters generated by the MOTAD method were compared to those of ordinary least squares (OLS) method. The analysis used a set of 178 trees cut from cloned eucalyptus plantations in the Southern part of the state of Bahia, Brazil. The values of the...

Quantifying herbage mass on rotationally stocked palisadegrass pastures using indirect methods Scientia Agricola
Braga,Gustavo José; Pedreira,Carlos Guilherme Silveira; Herling,Valdo Rodrigues; Luz,Pedro Henrique de Cerqueira; Marchesin,Wilson Aparecido; Macedo,Felipe Barros.
Indirect, non-destructive methods for estimating herbage mass on pasture may help growers to better estimate herbage mass and manage the grazing process. The objective of this study was to evaluate two methods for estimating herbage mass on Marandu palisadegrass [Brachiaria brizantha (A. Rich.) Stapf] pastures, over two grazing seasons. The relationships between herbage mass and two indirect, non-destructive measurements (sward surface height - SSH and rising plate meter - RP) were analyzed via regression analysis. Mean determination coefficients (r²) for the regression models were 0.82 and 0.91 for RP and SSH, respectively. Time within season influenced both slope (b) and intercept (a) of the regression models in both methods. The change in model...

Feedstock and inoculum characteristics and process parameters as predictors for methane yield in mesophilic solid-state anaerobic digestion Anais da ABC (AABC)
NIQUINI,GABRIELA R.; SILVA,SUZIMARA R.; COSTA JUNIOR,ESLY F.; COSTA,ANDRÉA O.S..
Abstract: In this study, several linear regression models were tested to predict the cumulative 30-day methane yield produced in mesophilic solid-state anaerobic digestion, employing diverse lignocellulosic biomass sources. Data collected from 13 studies were utilized, totalizing 86 experimental points, divided into regression and validation. Models containing higher order terms, the inverse of variables and interactions among all eleven input variables were tested. Simple linear models utilizing a single variable were unable to describe the methane production, giving an R² lower than 0.37. However, combinations of multiple variables and its inverses as only independent variable permitted an increase in simple linear models predictive capacity up to 63% of...

Prediction of Hevea progeny performance in the presence of genotype-environment interaction BABT
Gonçalves,Paulo de Souza; Moraes,Mário Luiz Teixeira de; Silva,Marcelo de Almeida; Gouvêa,Lígia Regina Lima; Aguiar,Adriano Tosoni da Eira; Costa,Reginaldo Brito da.
Twenty two open-pollinated Hevea progenies from different parental clones of the Asian origin were tested at five sites in the Northwestern São Paulo State Brazil to investigate the progeny girth growth, rubber yield, bark thickness and plant height. Except for the rubber yield, the analysis of variance indicated highly significant (p<0.01) genotype x environment interaction and heterogeneity of regressions among the progenies. However, the regression stability analysis identified only a few interacting progenies which had regression coefficients significantly different from the expected value of one. The linear regressions of the progeny mean performance at each test on an environmental index (mean of all the progenies in each test) showed the general...

Influence of fermentation time on characteristics of sourdough bread BJPS
Aplevicz,Krischina Singer; Ogliari,Paulo José; Sant'Anna,Ernani Sebastião.
Sourdough is used in the manufacture of numerous baked products. The microorganisms used in this preparation of sourdoughs included two strains from the Lactobacillus paracasei (1 and 2) and two strains from the Saccharomyces cerevisiae group (1 and 2). Samples of raw dough were analyzed for pH, titratable acidity and plate counts and samples of resulting bread were analyzed for pH, titratable acidity and specific volume. The samples were analyzed every 2 h, between 4 and 10 h of fermentation. After 10 hours of fermentation, the lowest values of pH were for dough with LC2 and bread with SC1. Titratable acidity values increased over time, with the highest levels of acidity were found in the dough and bread with yeasts. Lactic acid bacteria showed the...
