Contribution of WUSCHEL-related homeobox (WOX) genes to identify the phylogenetic relationships among Petunia species Genet. Mol. Biol.

Abstract Developmental genes are believed to contribute to major changes during plant evolution, from infrageneric to higher levels. Due to their putative high sequence conservation, developmental genes are rarely used as molecular markers, and few studies including these sequences at low taxonomic levels exist. WUSCHEL-related homeobox genes (WOX) are transcription factors exclusively present in plants and are involved in developmental processes. In this study, we characterized the infrageneric genetic variation of Petunia WOX genes. We obtained phylogenetic relationships consistent with other phylogenies based on nuclear markers, but with higher statistical support, resolution in terminals, and compatibility with flower morphological changes.

The PrP C prion protein contains 250 amino acids with some variation among species and is expressed in several cell types. PrP C is converted to PrP Sc by a post-translational process in which it acquires amino acid sequences of three-dimensional conformation of beta-sheets. Variations in the prion protein gene were observed among 16 genera of New World primates (Platyrrhini), and resulted in amino acid substitutions when compared with the human sequence. Abstract Cyanobacteria is a remarkable group of prokaryotic photosynthetic microorganisms, with several genera capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen (N2) and presenting a wide range of morphologies. Although the nitrogenase complex is not present in all cyanobacterial taxa, it is spread across several cyanobacterial strains. The nitrogenase complex has also a high theoretical potential for biofuel production, since H2 is a by-product produced during N2 fixation. Molecular discrimination of pouched four-eyed opossums from the Mamirauá Reserve in the Brazilian Amazon Genet. Mol. Biol.

Previous cytochrome B (CytB) mtDNA studies have suggested four species for the opossum genus Philander (four-eyed opossums), three (P. mcilhennyi, P. andersoni and P. opossum) from the Amazon and one (P. frenata) from the Brazilian Atlantic forest. During a faunal survey nine specimens of Philander sp. and four of Didelphis marsupialis were collected in the Mamirauá Sustainable Reserve, Amazonas State, Brazil. Molecular phylogenies, chromosomes and dispersion in Brazilian akodontines (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

A new molecular phylogeny for akodontine rodents from Brazil was proposed. The phylogenetic tree was enriched with the area of occurrence and with information on the karyotype of the samples. Based on this enriched tree, and with a described methodology, hypotheses were proposed on the karyotype and area of occurrence of the ancestors of each Clade. Thus it was possible to discuss hypotheses on chromosome evolution of the group, and on dispersion events from the "area of original differentiation" of akodontines in the Andes. Several squat lobster specimens of the genus Munidopsis were collected from an artificially placed carcass fall (cow bones) on Weijia Guyot in the western Pacific Ocean. Based on morphological comparisons and molecular analysis, three specimens were confirmed as juveniles of M. albatrossae Pequegnat & Pequegnat, 1973, which represents the first record of this species in the western Pacific. A new marine benthic Prorocentrum species from sandy habitats of South Brittany (northwestern France), P. consutum sp. nov., is described using LM and SEM and molecular phylogenetic analyses. Cells have a subcircular to broadly ovoid shape and are plainly flattened. They are 57-61 lm long and 52-55 lm wide. A central pyrenoid is present, and the kidney-shaped nucleus is positioned in the posterior region. Prorocentrum bimaculatum sp nov (Dinophyceae, prorocentrales), a new benthic dinoflagellate species from Kuwait (Arabian gulf) ArchiMer

A new benthic dinoflagellate species, Prorocentrum bimaculatum sp. nov., is studied from Kuwaits marine sediments, based on detailed morphological and molecular data. Cells are large, oblong oval in shape. They are 49.955.3 mu m long and 38.443.2 mu m wide. A new photosynthetic, sand-dwelling marine dinoflagellate, Ailadinium reticulatum gen. et sp. nov., is described from the Jordanian coast in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea, based on detailed morphological and molecular data. A. reticulatum is a large (53–61 μm long and 38–48 μm wide), dorsoventrally compressed species, with the epitheca smaller than the hypotheca. Current knowledge of Cryptosporidium species/genotypes in marine fish is limited. Following phylogenetic analysis at the 18S rDNA locus, a recent study identified six new genotypes of Cryptosporidium colonizing edible fish found in European seas. Of these, five grouped in a clade together (#Cryptofish 1–5) and one grouped separately (#Cryptofish 7). Redescription and phylogenetic analyses of Durchoniella spp. (Ciliophora, Astomatida) associated with the polychaete Cirriformia tentaculata (Montagu, 1808) ArchiMer

Microscopic and phylogenetic analyses were performed on endocommensal astome ciliates retrieved from the middle intestine of a marine cirratulid polychaete, Cirriformia tentaculata, collected in the bay of Roscoff (English Channel, Northwest French coast) and on the Southwest English coast. Three morphotypes of the astome genus Durchoniella were identified, two corresponding to described species (the type species Durchoniella brasili (Léger and Duboscq, 1904) de Puytorac, 1954 and Durchoniella legeriduboscqui de Puytorac, 1954) while a third morphotype remains undescribed.
