The tropical legume Acaciella angustissima inoculated with or without Sinorhizobium mexicanum ITTG R7T strain was cultivated in an aluminium (Al) spiked soil to study its tolerance towards this metal. Seedlings of A. angustissima were grown in soil with 0, 2, 4 or 6 mg Al kg-1. The effect of Al and inoculation on growth, nodulation, and nitrogen and tannins content in the plants was monitored. Height and total and dry root weight of plantlets decreased significantly when soil was spiked with Al, but increased when inoculated. Al decreased the number of nodules. Inoculum increased total N and tannin content of the plantlets. It was found that Al reduced the growth of the tropical leguminous N2-fixing shrub A. angustissima, while inoculation with S.... |

The use of cow urine can be considered an agricultural practice of low cost for farmers. Nevertheless, its efficiency on crop needs research information. The present research aimed to evaluate the effect of cow urine on the growth and yield of 'Regina 2000' lettuce, in an experiment carried out from January 13, 2006 to March 22, 2006. The experiment was set up with 12 treatments, in a split-plot design and four completely randomized blocks. The soil and leaf applications were installed in the plot. In the split-plot, cow urine was applied at different concentrations (0.00; 0.25; 0.50; 0.75; 1.00 and 1.25 %). The plot presented four rows with 1.75 m each, in 0.25 x 0.25 m spacing. The six central plants of the two central rows formed the sampled split-plot.... |

ABSTRACT In vegetables, especially the leafy ones, nitrogen (N) and water are essential in its growth, being N the second most absorbed and identified nutrient in the arugula leaf tissue. Water is essential for horticultural crops, so its use must be rational in order to achieve high yield. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of nitrogen levels and irrigation depths on the productive characteristics, the total leaf chlorophyll index (ICF) and nitrogen contents in the arugula culture. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design subdivided in plots, with two factors: A) nitrogen levels applied in coverage (25, 50, 100, 125 and 150 mg dm-3) and B) irrigation depths [(50 and 100% of the available water capacity (AWC)]. At... |

The application of cellulosic waste in forest plantations is an alternative to disposal, but more studies are necessary to confirm the safity of this disposal. The response of Pinus taeda L. to salinity in Humic Distrocryept was evaluated. In plantation, the seedlings were assessed for their height and stem diameter (SD), and at 120 days, were assessed the SD, height, dried root biomass (DRB), shoot (DBS) and total dried matter (TDM). The contents of P, K, Ca, Mg and Na were determinated, and, based on these levels it was estimated the quantity of these elements and calculated the efficiency use in leaves and roots and translocation to the shoot. Except the relationship between DSB/DRB, the other variables were significantly influenced by increased... |

With the objective of verifying the response of Euterpe oleracea seedlings to seven arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi species, an experimental trial was carried out under greenhouse conditions. Seeds of E. oleracea were sown in carbonized rice husk. Germinating seeds were initially transferred to plastic cups, containing fumigated Reddish Yellow Quartz Sand and inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Two months later, seedlings were transferred to 2 kg black plastic bags, containing the same soil without fumigation. Plant growth and mineral nutrients were evaluated nine months after mycorrhizal inoculation. Differential effects were observed among the species tested, with Scutellispora gilmorei being the most effective ones in promoting growth and... |

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of biochar made from Eucalyptus on soil fertility, and on the yield and development of upland rice. The experiment was performed during two years in a randomized block design with four replicates, in a sandy loam Dystric Plinthosol. Four doses of NPK 05-25-15, annually distributed in stripes (0, 100, 200 and 300 kg ha-1), and four doses of biochar (0, 8, 16 and 32 Mg ha-1), applied once in the first year - alone or with NPK - were evaluated. In the first year, biochar positively affected soil fertility [total organic carbon (TOC), Ca, P, Al, H+Al, and pH], at 0-10 cm soil depth, and it was the only factor with significant effect on yield. In the second year, the effect of biochar diminished or was... |
