Ocean Data and information Network for the European Countries in Economical Transition (ODINECET). Working Plan for 2008-2012: presented at the 2007 IODE Officers Meeting, Oostende, Belgium, 26-30 November 2007. OceanDocs
Akimova, Olga.
ODINECET (Ocean Data and Information network for the European Countries in Economical Transition) intends to create a network of marine libraries within the ECET region. Theoretically, ODINs are supposed to develop Data and Information management in different regions. The first stage of ODINECET focuses mainly on aquatic information management. So, according to the IOC Strategic Plan for Oceanographic Data and Information Management (2008-2011) we shall keep with recommendation 4.4 OceanDocs as follows: • The objective of OceanDocs is to make publications of marine science and oceanography more easily and freely accessible to the ocean (and coastal area) research and management community, to enhance scientific cooperation communication at the regional...

Emerging Africa: The Case of Ghana OceanDocs
Kwasi Fosu, A..
The growth record of Ghana has been one of unevenness, as Table I.1 and Figure I.1 clearly indicate. With a reasonably high GDP growth in the 1950s and early 1960s, the Ghanaian economy began to experience a slowdown in GDP growth as of 1964. Growth was turbulent during much of the period since the mid-1960s and only began to stabilize by 1984. In 1966, 1972, 1975-1976, 1979, 1980-1983, the growth rate was negative. The years in which negative growth was experienced generally coincide with change in government and sometimes with policy changes or reversals. Negative growth was first recorded during the time of the first coup d’etat, with a forceful transfer of authority from the dictatorial Nkrumah regime to the military headed by General Ankrah. The...

PIRATA South East Extension Feasibility Study. OceanDocs
Rouault, M..
PIRATA (Brazil, France, USA) has deployed between 1997 and 2001, an array of 12 ATLAS buoys with the objective of monitoring, describing and understanding the evolution of sea surface temperature, upper ocean thermal and saline structure, net heat budget, air-sea fluxes of momentum, latent and sensible heat and fresh water in the tropical Atlantic. The oceanic and meteorological observations are transmitted to shore via satellite and are available in near real-time on the Internet. They are communicated to the Global Telecommunication System and readily available for ocean and weather prediction models. The ultimate objective of PIRATA is real-time ocean monitoring to enable resource prediction in the adjacent countries.

The Necessity of Optimal Perturbations OceanDocs
DelSole, T..
An optimal perturbation is an initial condition that optimizes amplitude growth over a prescribed time in a linear system. Previous studies have argued that optimal perturbations play an important role in turbulence. Two basic questions related to this theory are whether optimal perturbations necessarily grow in all turbulent background flows, and whether the turbulent flow necessarily excites optimal perturbations at the rate required to account for the observed eddy variance. This paper shows that both questions can be answered in the affirmative for statistically steady turbulence. The argument put forward here is independent of any closure theory of turbulence. In essence, the result follows from the fact that statistical equilibrium and conservation...

Environmental Pollution In The Nigeria Coastal Waters; A Case Study Of The Lagos Lagoon OceanDocs
Adekanbi, E.O.; Okoye, B.C.O.; Ajao, E.A..
The state of pollution in the Lagos lagoon was examined by a field survey of twenty-six sites (stations) in the dry and wet season in 1985. Some selected sites were further re-examined in the same period in 1986. The sediment trace metals and total hydrocarbons were analysed. The relationship between non residual and residual trace elements was examined. For both years of study, total trace metal levels (mg/kg) fell in the ranges: Cu,1.9 – 132.4, Cr, 2.9 – 167; 7.8 – 830. 6; Ph, 1.6 – 483.1 and Cd, 0.04 – 15.5. Total hydrocarbon concentrations in 1985 ranged from 0.25 to 2766.27 mg/g with high concentrations in muddy and sandy sediments. The results show marked variations and non – uniform distribution from one season to another. With few exceptions,...

Community Structure and Productivity of Mangroves at Nabq, Red Sea OceanDocs
McCallum, J.N.; Paterson, L.; Greenwood, M.F.D..
Tree and pneumatophore height and density of Avicennia marina were measured along a point -intersection/band transect at Nabq, Red Sea, to establish possible zonation patterns amongst these mangrove characteristics. There was a significant increase in pneumatophore height and density landwards to seawards. Tree density decreased significantly down the transect. Graphical analysis showed an increase in tree height followed by a decrease at the seaward edge. Investigation of a theoretical increase in productivity (biomass) down the shore by leaf index calculation (leaf index = average leaf area x number of leaves per station) was inconclusive from data obtained.

Water Availability And Chemical Water Quality As Important Factors For Sustainable Wildlife Management In The Etosha National Park And For Domestic Stock In Farming Areas Of Namibia OceanDocs
Auer, C..
This study deals with the role of water availability and chemical water quality for the game species Springbok Antidorcas marsupialis, Blue wildebeest Connochaetes taurinus, Burchell’s zebra Equus burchelli and Gemsbok Oryx gazella, in order to gain knowledge of how the adapted wildlife utilises water. In detail, the study investigates the changes of the water availability and chemical quality of water at perennial and seasonal waterholes within a study area of the Etosha National Park, Northern Namibia, throughout the year 1995. It further examines how the animals react to these seasonal changes i.e. in their drinking frequency, their utilisation of perennial and seasonal waterholes, their utilisation of different chemical qualities of water, their...

Relatório do levantamento hidrográfico do Porto de Quelimane. OceanDocs

Kenya country paper Wetland classification for agricultural development in Eastern and Southern Africa OceanDocs
Mailu, G.M.; Kiai, S.P.M..
Kenya has a growing population projected to increase to 34 million people by the turn of the century. Though the country is undergoing industrial transformation, agriculture remains the mainstay of the economy. The country has an area of about 587 900 km2 of which 576 000 km2 is land surface. 88% of the land surface is classified as arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) and the remaining 12% forms the medium and high agricultural potential land. This classification is based mainly on the moisture index as indicated by average annual rainfall and evapotranspiration. The Great Rift Valley running north/south influences and determines the drainage pattern so that from the flanks of the Rift Valley, water flows westwards to Lake Victoria and eastwards to the Indian...

Social Literature Review for the Knowledge in Fisheries Management Project OceanDocs
Wilson, D.C..
Fisheries co-management has two agendas associated with it that sometimes work together and sometimes contend. The first agenda is to make fisheries management more rational, meaning making it better able to achieve its objectives. The second agenda is to make fisheries management more equitable by giving those people who have the most at stake in management decisions a greater say in those decisions. The knowledge on which co-management is based plays a critical role in both of these agendas. If the knowledge needed for management, for example about the condition of a fish stock, is more realistic and easier to get, this helps management to be more rational. If the knowledge needed for management is contributed to, shared and controlled by more...
