In wet season, rainfed area in Lower Northern of Thailand has has an abundance of soil and water availability which is suitable for growing a photoperiod-sensitive rice with high yield potential. However, favorite rice varieties often have low yield and are susceptible to rice pests. Breeding for high yield and resistance to disease and insect pests while maintaining good eating quality is, therefore, the major approaches in changing rice varieties for good qualities, increased yield and adequate consumption. A promising lines, PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1, was obtained from three-way cross between KLG88028-22-1-2-2 and F1 of SPR88096-17-3-2-2 and IR60 at Phitsanulok Rice Research Center. Selection in F4-F6 was subsequently conducted at Chai Nat Rice Research Center since 2000. PSL97060-17-CNT-1-2-1 is a photoperiod-sensitive, non-glutinous and early maturing rice line. It is harvested in the middle of November, giving an average grain yield of 629 kg/rai. The average height is 153 cm. It has a rather upright tiller, strong culm and lodging resistance. One-thousand grain weight is 38.1 g. The seed has a straw color. The brown rice has length x width x thickness of 8.14 x 2.41 x 1.91 mm, respectively. It has low chalkiness, low amylose content (16.27%), soft gel consistency, low gelatinization temperature and normal elongation ratio (1.60 times). Cooked rice is as soft as KDML105 and aromatic. It is suitable for the rainfed area in the Lower Northern and Central regions which need the early maturing rice, good yield and moderate resistance to bacterial leaf blight.
