Dentectus barbarmatus, a new genus and species of mailed catfish of the subfamily Loricariinae, tribe Loricariini, is described from tributaries of the northern margin of the Orinoco River in Venezuela. Morphometric and meristic data of several specimens are presented and illustrations are given. The relationships of the new genus with other genera of the tribe are discussed. It is assigned to the subtribe Planiloricariina, together with Pseudohemiodon Bleeker, 1862, Rhadinoloricaria Isbrücker & Nijssen, 1974, Crossoloricaria Isbrücker, 1979, and Planiloricaria Isbrücker, 1971. |

The Golden grey mullet, Liza aurata (Risso, 1810), inhabits the coastal waters of the Netherlands at least since 1939, as was established by re-examining preserved specimens in the collection of the Institute of Taxonomic Zoology (Zoological Museum), Amsterdam. A key to the three Mullet species in the Netherlands (Chelon labrosus (Risso, 1826), Liza ramada (Risso, 1826), and Liza aurata (Risso, 1810)) is provided. |

An alien amphipod, Gammarus tigrinus Sexton, has been observed in the Netherlands, mainly in oligohaline waters. It has had an “explosive” development in the Yssellake (the former Zuydersea) and occurs also in a great number of inland waterways in the province of North-Holland (fig. 1). It co-exists with, and often outnumbers, the local gammarids, G. pulex, G. zaddachi and G. duebeni. It is expected that the extension of its range will continue next years; fig. 2 illustrates the range of this introduced species in autumn 1965. Since Irish specimens of G. tigrinus were released in 1960 in the Yssellake, it is not clear whether the Dutch populations originate from the Irish stock, or whether that they were accidentally, e.g. in ballast tanks, carried to the... |

The South American callichthyid catfish genus Aspidoras R. von Ihering, 1907, is redefined on the basis of thirteen nominal species. Morphological differences with the related genus Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, are discussed. Two species originally described in Corydoras, viz., Corydoras raimundi and Corydoras pauciradiatus are herein transferred to Aspidoras. Aspidoras now consists of the following previously described nominal species: (1) Aspidoras rochai R. von Ihering, 1907 (type-species of the genus), known from Brazil, Est. Ceará, Fortaleza, (2) Aspidoras raimundi (Steindachner, 1907) from Brazil, Est. Maranhão, Rio Parnaíba system, (3) Aspidoras lakoi P. de Miranda Ribeiro, 1949, from Brazil, Est. Minas Gerais, Rio Paranaíba system, and (4) Aspidoras... |

A new monotypic genus and two new species of South American mailed catfishes of the subfamily Loricariinae are described and figured. A discussion of and comparative notes on related taxa are added. Ricola genus novum is established for the species originally described by Regan (1904) as Loricaria (Loricaria) macrops. A lectotype for Ricola macrops is selected from the two syntypes, originating from Río de la Plata in Argentina/Uruguay. Ricola macrops is compared with species of the genus Loricaria Linnaeus, 1758. Loricaria prolixa species nova is described from Rio Piracicaba, Est. São Paulo, Brazil. It is compared with Loricaria macrodon Kner, 1854, and with Loricaria lata C. H. Eigenmann & R. S. Eigenmann, 1889. Pseudohemiodon apithanos species nova... |

This paper deals with two genera of loricariid fishes: Rhadinoloricaria gen. nov., and Planiloricaria Isbrücker, 1971. Rhadinoloricaria is established for the species macromystax, described by Günther (1869: 426) in the binomen Loricaria macromystax. Planiloricaria, elevated to generic rank in the present paper, was described by Isbrücker as a subgenus of the genus Pseudohemiodon Bleeker, 1862, for the new species cryptodon (Isbrücker, 1971: 278). Diagnoses of these two monotypic genera are given, together with redescriptions and figures of their type-species. The relationships with other genera within the subfamily Loricariinae are discussed. A provisional subdivision into six genus-groups is given, and a new subfamily name, Acestridiinae, is proposed for... |

A review of 99 species and subspecies of the genus Corydoras is given. The primary type-material is recorded together with additional type-specimens deposited in 22 different museum collections. Two neotypes and 22 lectotypes are designated. The species are arranged in five groups: 31 species in the punctatus-group, 11 in the barbatus-group, 25 in the aeneus-group, 8 in the elegans-group, and 19 in the acutusgroup. Measurements and counts of almost all primary typespecimens are tabulated. Ill-known illustrations of type-material are included. |

This catalogue resulted from our attempts (since 1963) to accommodate and modernize the labelling of type-material of Recent fishes in the collections of the Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA), now named Institute of Taxonomie Zoology, University of Amsterdam. We traced 6625 type-specimens of 714 nominal species or subspecies, 228 of which are primary type-specimens (holotype, lectotype, or neotype); moreover, the collection contains one or more syntypes of 222 nominal (sub-) species. A few syntypes are presently indicated as future lectotype in the collection, awaiting publication by various specialists. Such specimens are not distinguished in this catalogue. It is possible that lectotype designations for some species have been validly published, which... |

Recently the Zoological Museum in Amsterdam came into possession of three specimens of the White-beaked Dolphin, Lagenorhynchus albirostris. As data on this species are rather scarce, it may be useful to publish a few notes on these animals. The first dolphin, a female, was caught in the North Sea at 7.3 miles N.N.W. from IJmuiden (about 52° 34’ N, 4° 30’ E) at the end of November 1958 by a commercial fish-trawler. The animal was obtained by the Netherlands Whale Research Group T.N.O. (Prof. dr. E. J. Slijper and Drs. W. L. van Utrecht), Amsterdam, for anatomical studies. Afterwards the skull and the complete skeleton were presented to the Zoological Museum. The dolphin was pregnant, its fetus weighed 1.5 kg. This specimen bears the registration number ZMA... |

Examination of 291 specimens of Chilodus, a genus of South American fresh water fishes, yielded the presence of three species, viz.: C. punctatus, C. zunevei, and C. gracilis. Of the first species the lectotype is designated. The type material of C. zunevei is lost; new material enabled a redescription of this species. C. gracilis is described as a new species, although it is known as an aquarium fish since decades. The three species are illustrated; a key to them and a map showing their distribution are included. |

This paper contains descriptions and figures of two new species of Corydoras Lacépède, 1803, C. weitzmani from Peru, and C. blochi from Guyana, Brazil, and Venezuela. The latter species is represented by two subspecies, C. blochi blochi from the Amazonas, Branco, Orinoco, and Essequibo drainages, and C. blochi vittatus from the Itapecuru basin. |
