During the present study, we aimed at providing a first look at the elemental composition of the early stages of cephalopods as an approach to their elemental requirements in culture. Essential and non-essential elemental profiles of the European cuttlefish Sepia officinalis, the European squid Loligo vulgaris and the common octopus Octopus vulgaris laboratory hatchlings and wild juveniles were analysed. In addition, for O. vulgaris we determined elemental profiles of mature ovary, eggs in different stages of development and followed possible effects of four dietary treatments during paralarval rearing, also analyzing elemental content of the live preys Artemia nauplii and Maja brachydactyla hatchling zoeae. Content was determined for essential (As, Ca,... |

Sexual differentiation of the marine leatherback turtle is sensitive to temperature. Incubation of eggs below 29 degree C results in 100% males, whereas incubationa bove 30 degree C results in 100% potential females at hatching. Therefore, the threshold temperature lies between 29 and 30 degree C as has been found for other marine turtles (Caretta caretta, Chelonia mydas ). Among hatchlings from natural nests in French Guiana, 10% were males, 20% were potential females and 70% had an intermediate phenotype. The sand temperature at 60 cm of depth, near one nest, was recorded and was found to vary between 29 and 30 degree C during the presumed thermosensitive period. These results will be useful to marine turtle hatcheries which seek to manipulate sex ratios... |

Two international research cruises on board of the research vessel 'Ichthys' the first one in Aug-Sept 1971, and the second other in June-July 1972, have shown the reproduction of Thunnus thynnus, T.alalunga, Auxis thazard and Sarda in the surroundings of the Balearic Islands. The observations were made on the planctonic stages of these spp and on the physico-chemical and biological conditions of the environment. Some data were also collected on the presence of juvenile or mature stages of these fishes and on their fishery. |

Mature eggs were expressed from captured female and fertilised artificially with slightly bloody sperm, in dry conditions or in a humid atmosphere, both at 13 degree C. The best incubation conditions proved to be 13 degree C, with streptomycin and penicillin. Another sample was kept at 18 degree C. Hatching occurred after 4 or 5 days, larvae showing positive phototropism. The system of renewal of water and artificial food is described. The embryonic reserve drop of lipid disappeared between day 14 and 16. Observations on larvae were like previous ones, but live larvae had larger mouths than had fixed specimens, and it was found that temperatures of 13 degree C or 18 degree C were suitable beyond the egg stage. A sudden change in temperature caused by a... |

Modelling physical-biological interactions in the early life of fish is becoming an integral part of theoretical and applied marine ecology. A workshop on 'Advancements in modelling physical-biological interactions in fish early-life history' (WKAMF) was held in April 2006 to review recent developments and identify future research directions. Here we provide an overview of the information presented at WKAMF (some of which is published in this Theme Section), discussions that took place at the workshop, and the authors' perspectives as workshop co-Chairs. The major themes identified at the workshop were the need for enhanced model validation and sensitivity methods and improved understanding of physical and biological processes. Using the appropriate level... |

The production of transgenic animals (TA) using transfected spermatozoa or eggs is commented. Different methods have been employed to introduce transgenes into the gametes of several vertebrates and invertebrates. Methods for the transfection of gametes have employed naked DNA, viral vectors, DNA/Liposome complexes, electroporation or high velocity microprojectiles. Spermatozoa and oocytes or eggs have showed a good transfection efficience (80% in some cases), and microscopical observations demonstrated that the transgenes appeared localized in the nucleus. Gametes have shown to be naturally protected against the entrance of foreign genes because some semino plasma or plasma membrane proteins block the entrance of foreign genes in spermatozoa. In the... |

The chorion surface structure of the eggs of 31 species of the subfamily Parnassiinae was studied by SEM on a comparative basis. The eggs are briefly described and taxonomic characters are illustrated. The eggs of all examined species of the genus Parnassius possess a very thick, externally highly sculptured chorion, whereas in all other genera of the Parnassiinae the eggs are externally smooth, as in most Papilioninae. The thickened, externally sculptured chorion is regarded as an autapomorphy of the genus Parnassius, which probably is linked to the hibernation of the fully developed first instar larvae within the egg shell. Die Feinstruktur der Chorionoberfläche der Eier von 31 Arten der Unterfamilie Parnassiinae wurde vergleichend... |
