Agent Orange Day: Remediating chemical trespass Organic Eprints
Paull, John.
Agent Orange Day, 10th August, is a day for us to remember the raison d'être of the organics movement. It was on this day, 51 years ago, that the USA embarked on the most audacious and extensive program of chemical warfare that the world has witnessed. Continuously, over a decade (1961-1971), vast swathes of Vietnam's forests, waterways, and croplands were drenched and re-drenched in high dosage agricultural herbicides, reportedly up to 50 times the recommended dosages. The US military intention was to denude the land of forests and crops, and, on these crude terms, it was a success. Estimates put the area of Vietnam affected at three million hectares (7.4 million acres). The objective was to deny cover and crops to ‘the enemy’. The Viet Cong were fighting...

Environmental targets and shadow prices of bad outputs in organic and conventional farming Organic Eprints
Huhtala, Anni; Marklund, Per-Olov.
The shadow prices can be used as indicators of the costs of environmental regulation imposed as reflected in alternative farming technologies adopted. We illustrate our analytical findings with implications of the Finnish water protection policy measures on conventional and organic livestock farms over the period 1994-2002. Generally, the representative organic farm is found to be more technically efficient relative to its own technology than is the conventional representative farm. However, there is no statistical indication of a difference between these two particular representative farms in valuing the costs of undesirable output (manure) at the margin.

Poster: Organic milk as a sustainability strategy for Finnish milk system Organic Eprints
Mikkola, Minna.
Dairy farming in Finland is historically a mode of family farming, although modes like dairy farm companies and collaborative farms are increasing. Organic farmers are relatively young, well educated and their farms are modern and in the average, rather large. The use of automated milking systems (AMS) allows larger cattle sizes and makes work easier compared with previous methods. The organic cows’ feed is mainly grown on the farm, which makes organic milk production truly local business. The feeding is based on clover-grass silage, barley, oats, pea and rape-seed, the latter being often commercial. The organic cows produce about 8 000 kg milk yearly featuring a fairly reasonable level of intensity. The relatively small cattle sizes support disease...

Effects of C and N availability and soil-water potential interactions on N2O evolution and PLFA composition Organic Eprints
Andersen, Astrid J.; Petersen, Søren O..
Mitigation of agricultural N2O emissions via management requires quantitative information about the regulation of the underlying processes. In this laboratory study. short-term evolution of N2O from repacked soil was determined using an arable sandy loam soil adjusted to three water potentials (-15,-30 or -100 hPa) that were reached by adjustment of partly air-dried soil with nutrient solutions or water; a water retention curve of repacked soil had been determined prior to the incubation experiment. The amendments included a control treatment receiving water (CTL), and aqueous solutions of carbon in the form of glucose (C). ammonium sulfate (N), or both (CN). Rates Of CO2 and N2O evolution were followed during 14 days. Soil inorganic N and phospholipid...

Evaluation of Environmental Impacts of Organic Farming by LCA method - Greenhouse Gases from Corn Production Organic Eprints
Moudry, Jan (Jr.); Bernas, Jaroslav; Moudry, Jan; Konvalina, Petr; Kopecky, Marek.
Organic farming is perceived as a system with a number of positive impacts on all components of the environment. For more precise assessment of differences in environmental impacts of conventional and organic farming, we need to be able to measure and quantify such impacts. For this the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method may be used as a tool. Among other, the LCA method is also an invaluable tool for assessing GHG emissions related to agricultural production. In this paper, the use of LCA for evaluation of GHG emissions from Zea Mays L. growing is presented. The emission load was calculated by the simplified method LCA, impact category: climate change. The calculation was performed by SIMA Pro software with integrated ReCiPe Midpoint (H) method. The...

Spatial-temporal soil moisture dynamics under different cocoa production systems Organic Eprints
Niether, Wiebke; Schneidewind, Ulf; Armengot, Laura; Adamtey, Noah; Schneider, Monika; Gerold, Gerhard.
Soil moisture has high spatial and temporal variability, depending on topography, soil texture, vegetation and meteorological conditions. It influences many processes in the soil and supplies water to the vegetation. This is often a limiting factor in agricultural production. Over an 18-month period, we measured soil moisture dynamics down to a depth of 70 cm in a long-term trial in Bolivia comprising six different land-use systems, i.e. cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems, both under organic and conventional management, successional cocoa agroforestry systems and a natural fallow. Soil was heterogeneous over the area and in depth. We identified and separated two soil groups which differed in both, texture and soil water retention capacity....

Soil nutrient status and okra pod yield as influenced by plant density and cattle dung manure application Organic Eprints
Law-Ogbomo, K.E.; Osaigbovo, A.U.; Ogedegbe, S..
A field was carried out on an ultisol in humid area of Edo State, Nigeria to evaluate the effects of plant density and cattle dung manure application on soil nutrient status and okra pod yield. Treatments consisted of three levels of cow dung (0, 300 and 450 kg N ha-1) and three plant densities (47,619, 66,666 and 83,333 plants per hectare (pph)). A 3 x 3 factorial arrangement fitted into randomized complete block design and replicated three times. Data were collected on soil chemical properties and pod yield of okra. Routine analysis of the soil indicated that the soil was low in nutrient content, thus addition of cattle dung to the soil at various levels influenced the soil nutrient status positively. After cropping with okra, cattle dung application had...

Using the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART) for the Systematic Analysis of Trade-Offs and Synergies between Sustainability Dimensions and Themes at Farm Level Organic Eprints
Schader, Christian; Baumgart, Lukas; Landert, Jan; Muller, Adrian; Ssebunya, Brian; Blockeel, Johan; Weisshaidinger, Rainer; Petrasek, Richard; Mészáros, Dóra; Padel, Susanne; Gerrard, Catherine L; Smith, Laurence; Lindenthal, Thomas; Niggli, Urs; Stolze, Matthias.
When trying to optimize the sustainability performance of farms and farming systems, a consideration of trade-offs and synergies between different themes and dimensions is required. The aim of this paper is to perform a systematic analysis of trade-offs and synergies across all dimensions and themes. To achieve this aim we used the Sustainability Monitoring and Assessment Routine (SMART)-Farm Tool which operationalizes the Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture Systems (SAFA) Guidelines by defining science-based indicator sets and assessment procedures. It identifies the degree of goal achievement with respect to the 58 themes defined in the SAFA Guidelines using an impact matrix that defines 327 indicators and 1769 relations between...

Towards more ecoefficient food production: MFA approach Organic Eprints
Risku-Norja, H.; Mäenpää, I.; Koikkalainen, K.; Rikkonen, P.; Vanhala, P..
The key for the sustainable development is dematerialisation and ecoefficiency. Applied to agriculture ecoefficiency means production of nutritionally better food by using less inputs and by reducing the environmental burden. In restricting the material throughput it is essential to identify the most voluminous material flows and to direct the measures to them. Improving ecoefficiency of the food production requires that the benefits and the inputs are quantified in an unambiguous way and that the inputs are estimated for the whole production chain. A comprehensive view of the whole system is necessary. The food system comprises four mutually linked loops: 1) the plant production 2) the livestock husbandry, 3) the food processing industry and 4)...

Fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can improve the efficiency of biomass processing Organic Eprints
Ghasemi, Mohammad; Tsianou, Marina; Alexandridis, Paschalis.
A major barrier to the efficient utilization of biomass is the recalcitrance to dissolution of crystalline cellulose. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the current understanding of the mechanism and kinetics of cellulose dissolution, with particular attention on how these findings can improve the efficiency of biomass processing. An improved fundamental understanding of cellulose dissolution can guide the rational selection of solvents and the optimization of processing conditions, thus leading to an enhanced utilization of biomass.
