COMPOSTING TIME REDUCTION OF AGRO-INDUSTRIAL WASTES REA
Costa,Mônica S. S. De M.; Carneiro,Leocir J.; Costa,Luiz A. De M.; Pereira,Dercio C.; Lorin,Higor E. F..
ABSTRACT The agro-industrialization of animal products has led to a significant waste generation, which has been stabilized by composting process in specialized plants. Waste stabilization time on composting depends on the handling used. 12 treatments were performed, three frequency turnings combined with two environmental conditions (with and without coverage of the composting area) and with and without commercial inoculant, whose results were submitted to multiple regression analysis. Windrows turned twice a week in the first month had adequate temperature control and stabilization time of 83.5 and 95.5 days for uncovered and covered windrows, respectively. Uncovered windrows have accelerated the process in 10 days on average, with the disadvantage of...

COMPOSTING PROCESS IN THE PRODUCTION OF LETTUCE SEEDLING SUBSTRATES: EFFECT OF COVERING AND TURNING FREQUENCY REA
Ripp,Paula G.; Gusmão,Ana P.; Lorin,Higor E. F.; Costa,Mônica S. S. de M.; Edwiges,Thiago.
ABSTRACT The composting of waste from a broiler chicken production chain (BCPC) promotes the mitigation of environmental impacts and allows the commercialization of compost as an agricultural input. Both the characteristics and the potential for use of the final compost depends on the operational conditions during composting. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of organic compounds generated from composting BCPC residues and the pruning debris of urban trees in the germination and initial growth of lettuce seedlings. Six organic substrates obtained under different coverage conditions (presence and absence) and number of turns (8, 12, and 16) were evaluated using the germination index (IG) and Dickson quality index (DQI) for the production...

Annual dynamics of abundance, biomass and survival of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay, Black Sea IBSS Repository
Pavlova, E. V.; Murina, V. V.; Kemp, R. B.; Wilson, J. G.; Parchevsky, V. P..
The first comprehensive data on species composition, abundance, biomass and survival (living/dead ratio) of meroplankton in Sevastopol Bay (Black Sea) are presented. Marked differences were observed between the years 1998 and 1999, and these could be attributed to the hydrology and the eutrophication status of the different parts of the Bay. Shannon index and selected community parameters (number of species, biomass, numbers of individuals) indicated that South Bay was the worst affected part of the Bay with the greatest eutrophication impact on the meroplankton. The early larval stages of the barnacle Balanus improvisus and of the polychaete Polydora sp. were the most sensitive to presumed environmental stresses. It is suggested that the mortality of...

Caracteristiques saisonnieres de l'hydrobiologie du complexe estuariende Marennes-Oleron (France). ArchiMer
Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Deslous-paoli, Jean-marc; Berthome, Jean-paul; Garnier, J..
Four seasonal compaigns providing a sampling of 15 stations each followed during half a tide cycle, i.e. 120 water samples permit the definition of the main hydrobiological features of Marennes-Oleron Bay: salinity and turbidity, phytoplanktonic biomasses, ATP concentrations. The authors suggest that a new way of adapted sampling to their objectives, will work out in the future by sampling during tidal cycles but as frequently as possible.

Mosaic community dynamics on Juan de Fuca Ridge sulphide edifices: substratum, temperature and implications for trophic structure ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Levesque, Christian; Juniper, S; Tivey, Margaret.
Introduction : Ecological studies at hydrothermal vents often emphasize the importance of spatio-temporal heterogeneity in organism distribution within individual sites (Sarrazin et al., 1997) but the relative roles of environmental conditions, biological interactions and/or random processes in structuring hydrothermal communities remain poorly understood (Sarrazin & Juniper, 1999). A model of community succession developed by Sarrazin et al. (1997, 1999) proposed that a series of faunal assemblages form a mosaic community that colonizes hydrothermal edifices of the northeast Pacific vents. This paper further develops the succession model by incorporating new observations. At the core of the model is the recognition of distinct faunal assemblages that...

Relationships among fisheries exploitation, environmental conditions, and ecological indicators across a series of marine ecosystems ArchiMer
Fu, Caihong; Large, Scott; Knight, Ben; Richardson, Anthony J.; Bundy, Alida; Reygondeau, Gabriel; Boldt, Jennifer; Van Der Meeren, Gro I.; Torres, Maria A; Sobrino, Ignacio; Auber, Arnaud; Travers-trolet, Morgane; Piroddi, Chiara; Diallo, Ibrahima; Jouffre, Didier; Mendes, Hugo; Borges, Maria Fatima; Lynam, Christopher P.; Coll, Marta; Shannon, Lynne J.; Shin, Yunne-jai.
Understanding how external pressures impact ecosystem structure and functioning is essential for ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management. We quantified the relative effects of fisheries exploitation and environmental conditions on ecological indicators derived from two different data sources, fisheries catch data (catch-based) and fisheries independent survey data (survey-based) for 12 marine ecosystems using a partial least squares path modeling approach (PLS-PM). We linked these ecological indicators to the total biomass of the ecosystem. Although the effects of exploitation and environmental conditions differed across the ecosystems, some general results can be drawn from the comparative approach. Interestingly, the PLS-PM analyses showed...

In spite of its pivotal role in future implementations of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management, current knowledge about tuna habitat preferences remains fragmented and heterogeneous, because it relies mainly on regional or local studies that have used a variety of approaches making them difficult to combine. Therefore in this study we analyse data from six tuna species in the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans in order to provide a global, comparative perspective of habitat preferences. These data are longline catch per unit effort from 1958 to2007 for albacore, Atlantic bluefin, southern bluefin, bigeye, yellowfin and skipjack tunas. Both quotient analysis and Generalized Additive Models were used to determine habitat preference with respect to...

Selection of finfish species for aquaculture development in Martinique (FWI). ArchiMer
Thouard, Emmanuel; Soletchnik, Patrick; Marion, J.
Since 1981, in Martinique, a programme of selection of fishes suitable for aquaculture has been conducted. Zootechnical and socio-economical constraints have led to the choice of three species, endemic and exotic: the palometa (Trachinotus goodei ), the red drum (Sciaenops ocellata ) and the red florida hybrid (Oreochromis sp.).

Linking environmental variability and fish performance: integration through the concept of scope for activity ArchiMer
Claireaux, Guy; Lefrancois, Christel.
Investigating the biological mechanisms linking environmental variability to fish production systems requires the disentangling of the interactions between habitat, environmental adaptation and fitness. Since the number of environmental variables and regulatory processes is large, straightening out the environmental influences on fish performance is intractable unless the mechanistic analysis of the 'fish-milieu' system is preceded by an understanding of the properties of that system. While revisiting the key points in our currently poorly integrated understanding of fish ecophysiology, we have highlighted the explanatory potential contained within Fry's ( Fry 1947 Univ. Toronto Stud. Biol. Ser. 55, 1 - 62) concept of metabolic scope and categorization of...

Modelling growth variability in longline mussel farms as a function of stocking density and farm design ArchiMer
Rosland, Rune; Bacher, Cedric; Strand, Oivind; Aure, Jan; Strohmeier, Tore.
Mussels (Mytilus edulis) are commonly cultivated on artificial structures like rafts, poles or longlines to facilitate farming operations. Farm structures and dense mussel populations may result in water flow reduction and seston depletion and thus reduced individual mussel growth and spatial growth variability inside a farm. One of the challenges in mussel farming is thus to scale and configure farms in order to optimise total mussel production and individual mussel quality under different environmental regimes. Here we present a spatially resolved model for simulation of flow reduction, seston depletion and individual mussel growth inside a longline farm based on information about farm configuration (spacing between longlines, farm length and stocking...

Polychaete diversity at tropical Atlantic deep-sea sites: environmental effects ArchiMer
Cosson-sarradin, Nathalie; Sibuet, Myriam; Paterson, Glj; Vangriesheim, Annick.
This study assesses how differences in nutrient flux and bottom currents affect the diversity and trophic structure of deep-sea polychaete communities from the tropical northeast Atlantic at 20 degrees to 21 degrees N latitude. Faunal assemblages were studied from 3 sets of USNEL box cores (0.25 m(2)) taken at depths of 1700, 3100 and 4600 m. In terms of primary productivity, the cores were taken beneath water which is eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic, respectively. Total polychaete abundance, abundance of dominant species, and faunal similarity and diversity were compared among the 3 sites. Polychaete abundance decreased with increasing depth. Community structure reflected environmental characteristics as well as the influence of coastal upwelling....

High-resolution dynamics of a deep-sea Hydrothermal mussel assemblage monitored by the EMSO-Açores MoMAR observatory ArchiMer
Sarrazin, Jozee; Cuvelier, Daphne; Peton, Loic; Legendre, P.; Sarradin, Pierre-marie.
Although the spatial distribution of hydrothermal vent assemblages in relation to environmental conditions has been assessed in several studies, there is little documented data on the temporal variation of the fauna and corresponding abiotic factors in a vent community. Here, we present one of the longest integrated (faunal and environmental data) time series ever obtained in a hydrothermal ecosystem. The data were acquired using the TEMPO ecological module that was deployed between 2006 and 2008 on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, providing the first insights into the day-to-day variations in a Bathymodiolus azoricus mussel assemblage from the Lucky Strike vent field for the 48 days during which the video camera operated. The time-series yielded additional...

Seep communities from two mud volcanoes in the deep eastern Mediterranean Sea: faunal composition, spatial patterns and environmental control ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte; Desbruyeres, Daniel; Caprais, Jean-claude; Gauthier, Olivier; Ruffine, Livio; Buscail, Roselyne; Olu-le Roy, Karine; Sarrazin, Jozee.
The Mediterranean Sea constitutes a unique environment to study cold-seep ecosystems due to the presence of different geodynamic settings, from an active margin along the Mediterranean Ridge (MR) to a passive margin in the Nile Deep-Sea Fan (NDSF). We attempted to identify the structure of benthic communities associated with the Napoli and Amsterdam mud volcanoes (MVs) located on the MR and to establish the links between faunal distribution and environmental conditions at different spatial scales. Comparison between the 2 MVs revealed that the faunal distribution seemed to be mainly controlled by the characteristics of the microhabitats. On both geological structures, the variability between the different microhabitats was higher than the variability...

First insights into the structure and environmental setting of cold-seep communities in the Marmara Sea ArchiMer
Ritt, Benedicte; Sarrazin, Jozee; Caprais, Jean-claude; Noel, Philippe; Gauthier, Olivier; Pierre, Catherine; Henry, Pierre; Desbruyeres, Daniel.
A brackish-water cold seep on the North Anatolian Fault (NAF) in the Marmara Sea was investigated with the Nautile submersible during the MarNaut cruise in 2007. This active zone has already been surveyed and revealed evidence of active seeping on the seafloor, such as bubble emissions, patches of reduced sediments, microbial mats and authigenic carbonate crusts. MarNaut was the first opportunity to sample benthic communities in the three most common microhabitats (bioturbated and reduced sediments, carbonate crust) and to examine their relationships with environmental conditions. To do so, faunal communities were sampled and chemical measurements were taken close to the organisms. According to diversity indices, the bioturbated microhabitat exhibited the...

Relationship between metal levels in the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus and local microhabitat chemical characteristics of Eiffel Tower (Lucky Strike) ArchiMer
Martins, Ines; Cosson, Richard P.; Riou, Virginie; Sarradin, Pierre-marie; Sarrazin, Jozee; Santos, Ricardo S.; Colaco, Ana.
The turbulent mixing of hydrothermal hot fluid with cold seawater creates large chemical gradients at a small spatial scale that may induce variable physiological and biochemical adaptations within the vent fauna. The adaptation to such a variable environment by the vent mussel Bathymodiolus azoricus relies on a dual symbiosis hosted in the gills, and digestion of particulate organic matter. The surrounding environment not only provides the necessary energy sources and suspended organic particles for the vent mussel nutrition, but also potentially toxic compounds such as metals. Our main goal was to see if there is a relation between metal accumulation in mussel organs and the chemical characteristics of their close environment. Mussels were collected at...

The demersal fish assemblage of the coastal area adjacent to the Tagus estuary (Portugal): relationships with environmental conditions ArchiMer
Prista, N; Vasconcelos, Rp; Costa, Mj; Cabral, H.
The subtidal fish assemblage of Tagus estuary coastal area was sampled in order to infer about its relationship to environmental conditions and its possible nursery function for marine species. Fish sampling took place between May 2001 and February 2002 with an otter trawl. In addition to fish sampling, a physical, chemical and biological characterization of the water column and bottom sediment was performed. Density and biomass were determined and ecological and feeding guilds assigned to each fish species. Correspondence analysis (CA) was used to determine the spatio-temporal structure of the assemblage and its correlation to environmental variables. A total of 36 fish species were identified. The fish assemblage was dominated by few species, both in...

Modeling fish growth and reproduction in the context of the Dynamic Energy Budget theory to predict environmental impact on anchovy spawning duration ArchiMer
Pecquerie, Laure; Petitgas, Pierre; Kooijman, Sebastiaan.
Spawning location and timing are critical for understanding fish larval survival. The impact of a changing environment on spawning patterns is, however, poorly understood. A novel approach is to consider the impact of the environment on individual life histories and subsequent spawnings. In the present work, we extend the Dynamic Energy Budget (DEB) theory to investigate how environment variability impacts the spawning timing and duration of a multiple-batch spawning species. The model is successfully applied to reproduce the growth and reproduction of anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) in the Bay of Biscay. The model captures realistically the start and ending of the spawning season, including the timing of the spawning events, and the change in egg number...

Variation in structure and biomass of the benthic communities at three contrasting sites in the tropical Northeast Atlantic ArchiMer
Galeron, Joelle; Sibuet, Myriam; Mahaut, Ml; Dinet, A.
Three major size classes of the benthic metazoan communities (megafauna, macrofauna and meiofauna) were investigated simultaneously at 3 sites in the tropical Northeast Atlantic. The sites varied in their level of surface primary productivity (eutrophic, mesotrophic and oligotrophic). Results for 3 cruises in 3 seasons (Eumeli 2, winter 1991; Eumeli 3, autumn 1991; Eumeli 4, spring 1992) are given for each size class in terms of taxonomic composition, density and biomass. The benthic communities did not exhibit evidence of seasonal variation, but there were substantial differences in the quantitative structure of the metazoan communities between the 3 sites. Total metazoan density and biomass, as well as density and biomass of each size class, decreased...

The major objectives of this thesis were to study the structure, functioning and dynamics of different faunal assemblages associated with cold seep ecosystems in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. We focused our study on three main sites: the Marmara Sea, the Mediterranean ridge and the Nile deep sea fan. This thesis aims at determining the environmental signature of Mediterranean sites and the characteristics of the associated fauna at European and global scales. The specific objectives were to (1) determine the composition, diversity, density, biomass of invertebrate assemblages, (2) characterize biogeochemical conditions within different microhabitats in the vicinity of organisms, (3) to define the trophic relationships amongst seep fauna using stable...
