Complications have hampered the adoption of Universal Product Codes (UPCs) for fresh produce until recently. The data being collected using Bar Codes and Price Look-Up Codes (PLUs) have many applications. A case study of carrots demonstrates how analyses of scanning data can show the effects of new items on established products and the customer's willingness to pay for the new products. For precut and organic carrots in a Knoxville area supermarket chain, total carrot volume increased as the new products were introduced while regular (bunch) sales declined sharply. Consumers were willing to pay a premium for the convenience of precut products. |

By 2020, Dutch dairy chains envisage to be self-sufficient with regard to energy used by dairy farms and dairy processors. This would require dairy farms to produce 25 PJ per year, possibly by a combination of wind, solar and biogas. Current analyses focus on biogas. To evaluate the project’s feasibility we estimated the expected technical and financial performance of 4 types of business models, i.e. “CHP-farm”, “CHP-large”, “green gas” and “central upgrading”. Data stem among others from 23 biogas plants in the Netherlands. Anticipating that CHP-models and green gas models occur with a likelihood of 40% and 60% respectively, the total number of biogas plants at dairy farms would amount to 463. This paper examines public perceptions on food safety particularly relating to spinach, which was subject of countrywide recall in 2006. Results indicate that food safety perceptions may be driven by public trust/confidence in institutions whose activities may be directly or indirectly related to food safety. The results further suggest that food safety perceptions may also be related to the type of the product; for example, the public perceives frozen spinach differently from bagged fresh spinach. Additionally, the results show that low levels of objective knowledge about food pathogens and the resulting illnesses have implications on overall food safety. To help Americans meet nutritional requirements while staying within caloric recommendations, the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans encourage consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole-grain products, and fat-free or low-fat milk or milk products. This report provides one view of the potential implications for U.S. agriculture if Americans changed their current consumption patterns to meet some of those guidelines. For Americans to meet the fruit, vegetable, and whole-grain recommendations, domestic crop acreage would need to increase by an estimated 7.4 million harvested acres, or 1.7 percent of total U.S. cropland in 2002. This paper analyzed, via a multinomial logit model, the associations between household socioeconomic characteristics and the reasons eligible households give for not entering the Food Stamp Program. Data were taken from the 1979-80 Low Income Supplemental Sample of the USDA Nationwide Food Consumption Survey. Statistical analysis revealed that households either residing in suburban areas, with employed members, or whose head is a high school graduate cited a lack of information about the program as the reason for nonparticipation more frequently than their counterparts without one of these characteristics.
