MORPHOLOGICAL AND ANATOMICAL FEATURES OF FLAMMULINA FESTIVA SCOTT, 1970 (STYLOMMATOPHORA; CHAROPIDAE) FROM SOUTHERN CHILE, WITH NOTES ON ITS NATURAL HISTORY Gayana
Cádiz,Francisco J; Gallardo,Carlos S.
Flammulina festiva Scott, 1970 is a terrestrial gastropod endemic to southern Chile. Characteristics of living specimens, including the anatomy of the excretory and reproductive systems of this species are here reported for the first time. The excretory system of this species is of the charopid type with a short, curved primary ureter, and a secondary ureter which extends to the excretory sinus. The reproductive system exhibits characteristics similar to other Charopidae. There is an ovotestis that is divided into seven lobes, a well-developed albumin gland, an ovospermial duct with a proximally diverticulate, distally undivided prostatic gland, plus a short oviduct. The terminal portion of the system shows a pointed epiphallus, and a phallus within a...

Histologia del sistema reproductor masculino de Helobdella hyalina (Hirudinea, Glossiphoniidae) en Argentina Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Gullo,Betina Sandra.
A detailed preliminary histological analysis of Helobdella hyalina Ringuelet, 1942 male system from Los Talas, Buenos Aires, Argentina is described. Six pairs of testisacs, located between the crop caeca, form the male reproductive system. Each testisac is clothed by the mesotelium. Inside it, the germinal cells are connected to the citophore and develop functional unit called poliplast. The spermatozoa are released into testisacs after the reabsortion of the citophore. Five stages of spermatogenesis are described taking into account the successive maturation stages of germinal cells and the changes in the citophore size. Lining cells and gland cells were found in the seminal vesicle. Five different types of gland cells are placed inside the ejaculatory...

One Case of Triphallia in the Marine Snail Echinolittorina peruviana (Caenogastropoda: Littorinidae) International Journal of Morphology
Castillo,Viviana M; Brown,Donald I.
Gonochoric representatives of Littorinidae have a reproductive system organized with transit organs that connects the testicle with a penis specialized for internal fertilization. However, malformations at this level can produce, like triphallia (presence of triple penis). This description corresponds to one case of triphallia found in Echinolittorina peruviana (Lamarck, 1822) inhabitant of the South Pacific coasts. The macro and microscopic analysis reveals that every penis is an independent appendix whose individual morphology is similar to that in normal individuals, characterized by a non pigmented conic penis associated with a mammilliform gland located at the base of the right ocular tentacle. The cervical sperm groove lined by a simple ciliated and...

Histological Analysis of the Reproductive System and Gonad Maturity of Octopus rubescens International Journal of Morphology
López-Peraza,D. J; Hernández-Rodríguez,M; Barón-Sevilla,B; Bückle-Ramirez,L. F.
This study described the reproductive system and gonadal development of Octopus rubescens from Bahía de Todos Santos, Baja California, Mexico. A total of 65 organisms, 35 males weighing 7.2 to 543.4 g and 30 females from 9.4 to 87.7 g where analyzed. The gonad development was defined through histological methods using Hematoxylin-eosin and Arteta- trichrome stains. We describe macroscopically the reproductive system of males and females, and characterized each of the anatomic components. Eight stages of maturity were recognized in females: 1. Immature, 2. Initial folliculogenesis, 3. Final folliculogenesis, 4. Previtelogenesis, 5. Early vitelogenesis, 6. Final vitelogenesis, 7. Maturing and 8. Spawn. In males five stages were identified: 1. Immature, 2....

Microscopic Anatomy of the Reproductive System in Two Sympatric Species of Fissurella Bruguiére, 1789 (Mollusca: Vetigastropoda) International Journal of Morphology
Collado,Gonzalo A; Brown,Donald I.
This study describes the microscopic anatomy of the reproductive systems of the keyhole limpets Fissurella latimarginata and Fissurella cumingi to test the existence of a possible isolating reproductive mechanism of morphophysiological type between species, and consequently to determine if the findings provide a valid taxonomic characteristic to distinguish these sympatric species. The results show that in both species the reproductive system is intimately associated with the excretory system. The gonad has a septa organization, and is connected with the distal portion of the right kidney by means of a renopericardial duct which functions as a genital duct. The gametes are evacuated to the mantle cavity through the right kidney opening. Besides transport...

The Female Reproductive System of Zearaja chilensis (Guichenot, 1848) (Chondrichthyes, Rajidae): Gametogenesis and Microscopic Validation of Maturity Criteria International Journal of Morphology
Wehitt,Anahí; Di Giacomo,Edgardo E; Galíndez,Elena J.
Chondrichthyans are extremely susceptible to overfishing due, among other things, to their reproductive adaptations. Basic knowledge of reproductive parameters is essential, both of ecological and for economic points of view. Zearaja chilensis is a valuable economic resource in South America. This work analyzes the microanatomy of female reproductive system, as well as the size of the onset of vitellogenesis. The material was fixed in Bouin and processed using routine histological techniques. Both ovaries are equally functional. Folliculogenesis depicts the same pattern of other Chondrichthyans. Follicles with different degrees of maturation coexist in mature animals, with the exception of oogonia, which were only found in immature individuals. Likewise,...

Adult carbohydrate feeding affects reproduction of Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) Neotropical Entomology
Jordão,Alexandre L; Nakano,Octávio; Janeiro,Vanderly.
Reproduction of most insects depend on nutrients accumulated during the larval stage, but many lepidopteran species will also depend on nutrients obtained at the adult stage. Feeding at the adult stage allows the intake of carbohydrate and amino acid rich solutions, which may have an effect on the species reproduction and population growth. The objectives of the current study were to characterize the effects of sugar consumption by adults of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller), on its reproduction. To initially test the food intake by adults, a 10% honey solution or water (control), both containing a liquid dye were offered to adult insects 24h after emergence, and the presence of the dye was observed by analysis of their digestive...

Evaluation of the Status of the Namibian Hake Resource (Merluccius spp.) Using Statistical Catch-at-Age Analysis OceanDocs
Kirchner, Carola; Kainge, Paul; Kathena, Johannes.
Namibian hake is the most important fish resource in Namibia. This monograph is a compilation of all the hake data, historic and recent, that has been used to inform stock assessment and management since the late 1970s. It presents the statistical catch-at-age analysis used to evaluate the state of the Namibian hake resource under different assumptions. This analysis treats the two hakes, Merluccius paradoxus and M. capensis, as a single stock. The data and modeling show that the stock has not as yet recovered to its maximum sustainable yield level, despite foreign fishing effort having been removed in 1990. Best estimates suggest the current stock to be roughly 20% of pre-exploitation levels; however this figure is sensitive to model assumptions. Signs...

Histological and histochemical characterization of secretory cells of the male copulatory organs of Girardia anderlani (Platyhelminthes: Tricladida: Paludicola) Zoologia
Vara,Dioneia C. da; Leal-Zanchet,Ana M..
Glands of the reproductive system are important for taxonomical identification of flatworms. We studied the histology and histochemical characteristics of the glands of the male copulatory apparatus in Girardia anderlani (KAWAKATSU & HAUSER, 1983). Specimens were fixed in reproductive state, i. e. during and following copulation at four, eight, 12 and 16 hours intervals. Secretory cells were distinguished on the basis of secretion morphology and their staining properties, using trichrome methods and histochemical reactions. Twelve secretory cell types and five main types of secretions were identified in the male copulatory apparatus: glycoproteic with and without tryptophan; glycosaminoglycidic; neutral mucopolysaccharidic; and proteic. Compared to...

Aspectos anatômicos e funcionais do aparelho reprodutor de Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Parastacidae) Zoologia
Almeida,Alexandre Oliveira de; Buckup,Ludwig.
The absence of morphological external characteristics that allow the recognition of the sex as well as the presence of both male and female gonopores in the same animal [except in some sexual forms of Parastacus nicoleti (Philippi, 1882)] gives rise to the hypothetical existence of some form of hermaphroditism in crayfishes belonging to the genus Parastacus Huxley, 1879. Specimens of Parastacus brasiliensis (von Martens, 1869) were collected in a rivulet at Mariana Pimentel municipality, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. In the laboratory they were reared and dissected. The results suggest that P. brasiliensis may be a sequential hermaphroditic species, but male and female gonadal tissues were not simultaneously present in the analized samples. In testes and...

Picoral,Mônica; Thomé,José Willibaldo.
It is described the anatomy and microanatomy of the phallus complex of Rectartemon depressus (Heynemann, 1868). The complex is composed by a phallus, a diverticle of the phallus and an epiphallus, where the deferens duct is thrown in: the retractor muscle is splitted in two parts, inserted into the region of the epiphallus through a smaller branch, and at the extremity of the diverticle, through a longer and thiner branch. The lumen of the phallus, epiphallus and diverticle have corrugations and thorns. On the phallus the thorns are arranged in a protuberance and disposed alternately in rows, ali with an aculeus form and with a chestnut collor point and a yellow basis.

Inferring mating system parameters in forage peanut, Arachis pintoi, for Brazilian Amazon conditions Acta Amazonica
OLIVEIRA,Jônatas Chagas de; RUFINO,Polinar Bandeira; AZÊVEDO,Hellen Sandra Freires da Silva; SOUSA,Adna Cristina Barbosa de; ASSIS,Giselle Mariano Lessa de; SILVA,Lucielio Manoel da; SEBBENN,Alexandre Magno; CAMPOS,Tatiana de.
ABSTRACT The search for alternatives to increase productivity and sustainability of livestock production in the Amazon region without increasing deforestation is challenging. Mixed pastures of grasses with forage peanut (Arachis pintoi) have shown positive economic impacts. However, gaps in the knowledge of the reproductive biology of A. pintoi have limited the development of new cultivars adapted to the environmental variations in the Brazilian Amazon. Pasture consortiums of Brachiaria humidicola with forage peanuts (cv. Mandobi) resulted in a 42% increase in weight gain productivity. New cultivars better adapted to the Amazon climate should bring even greater gains. We evaluated the mating system in twenty A. pintoi accessions, and approximately 40...

Can the reproductive system of a rare and narrowly endemic plant species explain its high genetic diversity? Acta Botanica
Rodrigues,Daniele M.; Turchetto,Caroline; Callegari-Jacques,Sidia M.; Freitas,Loreta B..
ABSTRACT The reproductive system of flowering plants can be highly variable, affecting their biology, gene flow and genetic variability among populations. Petunia secreta is a rare annual endemic species of Pedra do Segredo, located in the municipality of Caçapava do Sul, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Although rare, the species possesses a high level of genetic variability. We investigated the reproductive system of P. secreta, including fruit production and seed germinability, in order to determine if its reproductive system can explain its genetic diversity. We sampled five populations and conducted five greenhouse hand-pollination treatments: 1) autonomous apomixis; 2) self-pollination; 3) hand self-pollination; 4) geitonogamy; and 5)...

Functional specialization and phenotypic generalization in the pollination system of an epiphytic cactus Acta Botanica
Martins,Cristiane; Freitas,Leandro.
ABSTRACT Plant-pollinator interactions range from obligatory specialists to facultative generalists, and floral morphology and pollination system may not match completely. The floral biology, reproductive system and floral visitors of a species of the tribe Rhipsalideae were investigated with a focus on the consistency between the pollination system and the floral phenotype. Rhipsalis neves-armondii is an obligate xenogamous species, due to self-sterility. Its flowers are white, small and diurnal, and radially symmetrical. These features, along with their small amount of nectar, characterize the flowers as phenotypic generalists. The most frequent pollinators were a solitary oligolectic species of Andrenidae (Rhophitulus solani), two species of Meliponinae...
