Databases, Scaling Practices, and the Globalization of Biodiversity Ecology and Society
Turnhout, Esther; Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group, Wageningen University, The Netherlands; esther.turnhout@wur.nl; Boonman-Berson, Susan; Forest and Nature Conservation Policy Group, Wageningen University, The Netherlands; susan.boonman-berson@wur.nl.
Since the Convention on Biological Diversity in 1992, biodiversity has become an important topic for scientific research. Much of this research is focused on measuring and mapping the current state of biodiversity, in terms of which species are present at which places and in which abundance, and making extrapolations and future projections, that is, determining the trends. Biodiversity databases are crucial components of these activities because they store information about biodiversity and make it digitally available. Useful biodiversity databases require data that are reliable, standardized, and fit for up-scaling. This paper uses material from the EBONE-project (European Biodiversity Observation Network) to illustrate how biodiversity databases are...

Brunner, A; Blackman, B; Davies, Peter.
The development of fracture mechanics test methods for the determination of delamination resistance or fracture toughness of fiber-reinforced, polymer-matrix composites is an active area of research. The emphasis in this review is on standardisation of test methods. Recent developments leading towards new standardized test procedures will be presented, complementing and updating earlier reviews. Ocean Sampling Day was initiated by the EU-funded Micro B3 (Marine Microbial Biodiversity, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology) project to obtain a snapshot of the marine microbial biodiversity and function of the world's oceans. It is a simultaneous global mega-sequencing campaign aiming to generate the largest standardized microbial data set in a single day. This will be achievable only through the coordinated efforts of an Ocean Sampling Day Consortium, supportive partnerships and networks between sites. This commentary outlines the establishment, function and aims of the Consortium and describes our vision for a sustainable study of marine microbial communities and their embedded functional traits.

The national biodiversity network in the UK Naturalis
Harding, P..
The national biodiversity network in the UK The National Biodiversity Network (NBN) has been developed in the United Kingdom over a period of about five years, forming the NBN Trust in March 2000. The NBN Trust brings together those with shared interests in the collection, management and use of data and information about species, biotopes and sites in the UK. These include volunteers and specialist societies, non-governmental wildlife organisations and the statutory nature conservation agencies and other governmental organisations. By working to common standards, agreeing priorities and sharing data, greater use can be made of the work of the specialists and skilled volunteers that collect biodiversity data in the field. NBN is still developing, but it...

Ocean Data Standards, Volume 1, Recommendation to Adopt ISO 3166-1 and 3166-3 Country Codes as the Standard for Identifying Countries in Oceanographic Data Exchange. OceanDocs
The value of standards for the management and exchange of data has always been acknowledged. In the oceanography and marine meteorology domain, there have been many efforts to develop common standards and data frameworks for processing data and information but these have never been widely adopted by the community. IODE and JCOMM recognized that, although there were mechanisms to facilitate coordinated ocean data exchange, these had not resulted in the degree of agreement on a wide range of matters that were needed in order to allow the easy exchange and interoperability of collected data. In 2008, the joint IODE/JCOMM Forum on Oceanographic Data Management and Exchange Standards established the Ocean Data Standards Pilot Project (ODS). One of the...

The Direct Economic Effects of Stricter Standards Towards the Protection of Human and Animal Health in Swine Sector AgEcon
Mora, Cristina; Menozzi, Davide.
The objective of this study is to present the results of a research carried out on a group of farms involved in pig fattening (48 farms) to evaluate the economic impact of implementing human and animal health regulation. The five types considered in any case represent 90-95% of the total health costs, there are therefore economies of scale and considering the types of expenditure, veterinary medicines have a strong incidence on fattening farms, together with medicated feed for consumption on the farm and the control of Aujeszky's disease. The overall health costs have on average reached the 2% of total costs and the same value of the net income.

Food Quality Standards in Equilibrium Models: A Discussion of Current Modeling Approaches AgEcon
Nolte, Stephan; Rau, Marie-Luise.
Throughout recent year food quality standards have become a ubiquitous phenomenon that nationally and globally influences agri-food markets. With equilibrium models commonly used in the quantitative analysis of market and trade effects, we review possible approaches to modeling standards existent in the literature, elaborate the reasoning behind them and discuss their suitability to reflect "real world" situations. While the modeling approaches identified may respectively depict a specific situation, they may not be appropriate in others. That is they capture certain effects of standards only. With increasing ability to account for the various effects of standards, the modeling approaches become more complex and the data requirements increase.

The Induced Innovation Hypothesis and Energy-Saving Technological Change AgEcon
Newell, Richard G.; Jaffe, Adam B.; Stavins, Robert N..
We develop a methodology for testing Hick's induced innovation hypothesis by estimating a product-characteristics model of energy-using consumer durables, augmenting the hypothesis to allow for the influence of government regulations. For the products we explored, the evidence suggests: (i) the rate of overall innovation was independent of energy prices and regulations, (ii) the direction of innovation was responsive to energy price changes for some products but not for others, (iii) energy price changes induced changes in the subset of technically feasible models that were offered for sale, (iv) this responsiveness increased substantially during the period after energy-efficiency product labeling was required, and (v) nonetheless, a sizeable portion of...

Economics of Water Quality Protection from Nonpoint Sources: Theory and Practice AgEcon
Ribaudo, Marc; Horan, Richard D.; Smith, Mark E..
Water quality is a major environmental issue. Pollution from nonpoint sources is the single largest remaining source of water quality impairments in the United States. Agriculture is a major source of several nonpoint-source pollutants, including nutrients, sediment, pesticides, and salts. Agricultural nonpoint pollution reduction policies can be designed to induce producers to change their production practices in ways that improve the environmental and related economic consequences of production. The information necessary to design economically efficient pollution control policies is almost always lacking. Instead, policies can be designed to achieve specific environmental or other similarly related goals at least cost, given transaction costs and any...

A Strategic Perspective on the Impact of Food Safety Standards on Developing Countries AgEcon
Henson, Spencer J.; Jaffee, Steven.
This paper explores the competing concepts of 'standards as barriers' and standards as catalysts' in the context of food safety standards in international trade in agricultural and food products. It is suggested that food safety standards can act as both a barrier to trade and the basis of competitive positioning for developing countries in international markets. This suggests that the application of a strategic framework to analyze and assess alternative responses to evolving food safety standards can throw some light on the circumstances under which standards act to prohibit trade or, alternatively, create competitive trade opportunities. The use of such a framework is illustrated through a brief case study of fish and fishery product exports from...
