In the domain of climate change adaptation, joint knowledge production (JKP) through intensive cooperation between scientists, policy-makers, and other actors is often proposed as a means to reconcile supply and demand for knowledge. Regional adaptation projects in the Netherlands form prominent examples of this. However, there is a lack of systematic empirical studies on how JKP can be done successfully. Here, we take the next step toward generating design principles for JKP. We do so by carrying out a comparative analysis of six Dutch adaptation projects using a previously developed assessment framework. Project documents were studied, and 30 semi-structured interviews were held with researchers, policy-makers, and financiers in the projects. Based on... |

Both in literature and in practice, it is claimed that joint knowledge production (JKP) by researchers, policy makers, and other societal actors is necessary to make science relevant for addressing climate adaptation. Although recent assessments of JKP projects have provided some arguments in favor of their societal merit, much less is known about their scientific merit. We explored the latter by developing a conceptual framework addressing characteristics of doing JKP as well as hypotheses on potential merits and pitfalls in terms of its process, output, and impact for science. Semistructured interviews with six environmental science research leaders as well as discussions with five researchers involved in past JKP projects were used to start... |

An incomplete odontocete (Mammalia, Cetacea) skull from Middle Miocene Miste Bed (near Winterswijk in the eastern part of The Netherlands) is described as Vanbreenia trigonia, a new genus and species. The skull exhibits a short rostrum with only two maxillary teeth for each toothrow and with narrow and toothless apical portion exclusively formed by the premaxilla. Considering this last character, the specimen could belong to the Eurhinodelphinidae even if a certain attribution is not possible because of the incompleteness of the specimen. Vanbreenia n. gen. could represent a specialized adaptation to bottom suction feeding among the eurhinodelphinids. |

Status of Dolichopodidae of the Flemish red data book in the Netherlands (Insecta: Diptera) The distribution and status of threatened and rare Flemish dolichopodid species in the Netherlands is investigated. Rarity classes are based on the percentage of sampled UTM 10 km squares with species records, in combination with the most recent capture date. The Dutch fauna comprises 244 species, 22 of which have presumably become extinct. About 52% of the 224 shared species with Flanders seem to be more common in the latter region. Among the 23 species that are more widespread in the Netherlands, saltmarsh-, heathland-inhabiting and riparian species are better represented than in the entire shared fauna. The observed faunal discrepancies might be related to... |

A description is given of the fossil small mammal remains that were found during dredging activities in the Oosterschelde estuary, the Netherlands. The following taxa are encountered in the samples: Mimomys pliocaenicus, Mimomys reidi, Mimomys tigliensis, Mimomys newtoni, Trogontherium sp., Beremendia fissidens, Sorex (Drepanosorex) praearaneaus, and Galemys kormosi. The find of one m1 of Microtus oeconomus is considered to be a contamination. The fauna is of Late Pliocene age, and may appear slightly older than the classic Tegelen fauna. In terms of mammal zonation, we consider the age to be MN17. |

An isolated gastropod homing scar, etched into an arcoscalpelline (cirripede) scutum, is recorded from the upper Nekum Member (Maastricht Formation, upper Maastrichtian) at the ENCI-HeidelbergCement Group quarry. This trace may be assignable to the ichnogenus Lacrimichnus Santos, Mayoral & Muñiz, that comprises etching scars produced by Neogene calyptraeid and/or capulid gastropods and ostreid bivalves from southern Spain and Portugal. However, it differs from both ichnospecies currently contained in that ichnogenus, L. bonarensis and L. cacelensis, in showing a relatively deep depression around the rim, irregularly distributed pit- and slit-like depressions, and an irregularly subcircular outline. Despite the wealth of available hard substrates... |

Bucculatrix ainsliella Murtfeldt, 1905 is for the first time reported from Europe: the Netherlands, Belgium, and adjacent Germany. DNA barcodes confirm its identity. It is the first North American lepidopteranspecies feeding on northern red oak Quercus rubra ever found in Europe, and only the second North American oak-feeding insect found in Europe. The species has regularly been found in the Netherlands and northern Belgium since 2006, and in 2011 also in Nordrhein-Westfalen in Germany, adjacent to the Dutch border, but the earliest records are from the Netherlands, Amersfoort in 1989 and 1990. Early stages, leafmines, and the adult are described, illustrated, and diagnosed against oak-feeding Bucculatrix ulmella Zeller, 1848 and other similar species.... |

This paper aims at modelling the spatial distribution of the cockroach species Capraiellus panzeri, Ectobius lapponicus, Ectobius pallidus and Ectobius sylvestris within the Netherlands and comparing the habitat preferences of these species. Maxent was used to calculate habitat suitability and to identify environmental variables underlying the differences in observed distribution patterns. A sub-sampling procedure was employed to test model stability. Models were evaluated by calculating the Area Under the Curve (AUC). The analyses show that except for the costal dune area, the western part of the Netherlands is unsuitable for the species. Suitability predictions for C. panzeri, E. lapponicus and E. sylvestris are very similar, with suitable areas... |

The number of known sciurid and petauristid fossils from The Netherlands is nearly doubled with the description of material from the Zuurland boreholes, the Maasvlakte, and the Tegelen claypit. The material from Tegelen is assigned to a new species of flying squirrel, Hylopetes debruijni nov. sp. One molar from the late Early Pleistocene of the Zuurland borehole is assigned to Sciurus cf. S. vulgaris. The remaining finds from the Tiglian of the Zuurland boreholes, as well as the single molar from the Maasvlakte, are all assigned to Spermophilus primigenius; this name is preferred over the suggestive use of names of recent ground squirrels for fossil material. The presence, during roughly the same stratigraphic interval, of a flying squirrel in Tegelen and... |

A single example of Oichnus excavatus Donovan & Jagt, infesting the holasteroid echinoid Hemipneustes striatoradiatus (Leske), is reported from the upper Meerssen Member, Maastricht Formation (uppermost Maastrichtian), of the former Blom quarry, Berg en Terblijt, southern Limburg, The Netherlands. This is the first evidence that O. excavatus may be more widely distributed in the type area of the Maastrichtian than previously assumed. The embedment structure occurs just below the ambitus and close to the peristome, suggesting that the producing organism may have been ingesting detritus from the sea floor rather than filter feeding, the more usual interpretation of its behaviour. |

Late Quaternary (Eemian) deposits of the Netherlands contain shells that resemble those of living Mytilus galloprovincialis. Similar broad-shelled mytilids also occur in estuaries of the southwestern Netherlands together with slender individuals typical of M. edulis. We sampled living mussels along a depth gradient in the Oosterschelde to a) investigate whether a relation exists between shell shape and depth, b) test if the broadshelled specimens might represent M. galloprovincialis (or a hybrid with M. edulis) and c) assess by inference if the Quaternary specimens might be attributed to M. galloprovincialis as well. In order to do so, we compared genetic (length polymorphism of Me 15/16, COIII sequences and AFLPs) and shellmorphological characteristics... |
