Entomopathogenic nematodes: potential for exploration and use in South America Neotropical Entomology
GREWAL,PARWINDER S.; NARDO,ELIZABETH A. B. DE; AGUILLERA,MARINEIDE M..
Entomopathogenic nematodes have potential for biological control of insect pests. They are currently used for the control of soil and cryptic pests in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. Entomopathogenic nematodes can be easily mass-produced and applied using conventional spray equipment. They have a broad host range and are safe to the environment. Due to the history of success with implementation of biological pest control programs, South American countries have a great opportunity to develop and implement the use of entomopathogenic nematodes. Recent emphasis on fruit and vegetable production in Brazil also stresses a need to implement safer and effective pest control methods. This paper provides an overview of recent developments in...

Prey captured and used in Polistes versicolor (Olivier) (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) Nourishment Neotropical Entomology
Prezoto,Fábio; Santos-Prezoto,Helba H.; Machado,Vera L.L.; Zanuncio,José C..
The social wasps are predators of many insect species and the study of their preys can reveal the potential of these natural enemies in biological control programs. A total of 240h of collections of preys in 32 nests of Polistes versicolor (Olivier) was carried on in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, from March 2000 to February 2001. The preys captured by P. versicolor were mainly those from the orders Lepidoptera (95.4%) and Coleoptera (1.1%) while 3.4% of them were not identified. Chlosyne lacinia saundersii Doubleday & Hewitson (Lepidoptera: Nymphalidae) was the most collected prey (13.5%). The total of 4,015 preys was estimated to be captured per colony of P. versicolor during one year. The species can be used in integrated pest...

Biological, nutritional, and histochemical basis for improving an artificial diet for Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) Neotropical Entomology
Magro,Sandra R.; Dias,Alcides B.; Terra,Walter R.; Parra,José R.P..
The biology of Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) reared on fifth instars of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) (natural diet) and in vitro (artificial diet) was evaluated. Data on the number of instars, development time and food intake were collected, and histochemical tests were conducted to detect proteins and lipids in the parasitoid's digestive tract. The data disclosed differences that can help to improve artificial rearing of B. hebetor. B. hebetor had three instars in both diets, but the developmental time on the artificial diets was prolonged due to the increase in larval and pupal development times. Larvae grew faster on the natural host and required a lower food intake (2.7 µl) as compared to that required by the...

Parasitism characteristics of two phorid fly species in relation to their host, the leaf-cutting ant Atta laevigata (Smith) (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) Neotropical Entomology
BRAGANÇA,MARCOS A.L.; TONHASCA JR.,ATHAYDE; MOREIRA,DENISE D.O..
The leaf-cutting ants Atta sexdens (L.) and Atta laevigata (Smith) constitute serious pests of agriculture and forestry in Brazil. These ants are parasitized by the phorids Neodohrniphora tonhascai Brown and Neodohrniphora erthali Brown (Diptera: Phoridae), respectively. The parasitic potential of N. tonhascai against its host has been previously investigated, but no equivalent information is available for N. erthali. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the oviposition behavior and some biological characteristics of N. erthali in relation to its host and to determine the parasitic potential of N. tonhascai against A. laevigata, considering that in many parts of southeastern Brazil nests of A. sexdens and A. laevigata are found in close proximity...

Interactions mediated by predators in arthropod food webs Neotropical Entomology
Venzon,Madelaine; Pallini,Angelo; Janssen,Arne.
Studies on interactions among plants, herbivores and natural enemies are important for understanding population dynamics of species in food webs, but they are also important for the practice of pest control with natural enemies. Biological control programs heavily rely on the occurrence of trophic cascades, where the addition of one natural enemy causes a decrease of pest densities and an increase of plant biomass. However, when more that one natural enemy is used to control various pests in the same system, artificial food webs are created and simple tritrophic interactions change to more complicated ones. The occurrence of complex interactions and omnivory in these food webs may modify the sign and the strength of direct effects of natural enemies on...

Ocorrência de Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Maskell) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) e seu inimigo natural Psyllaephagus pilosus Noyes (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) em Eucalyptus globulus no Rio Grande do Sul Neotropical Entomology
Kurylo,Cris L; Garcia,Mauro S; Costa,Valmir A; Tibola,Cristiane; Ramiro,Glodoaldo A; Finkenauer,Elder.
Eucalyptus are hosts of several psyllid species. Among them, Ctenarytaina eucalypti (Maskell) is considered the most harmful to Eucalyptus globulus plantations. In Brazil, this pest has been observed in the state of Parana, and in 2005, it was found causing damage to plantations of E. globulus in Arroio Grande and Piratini cities, RS. The monophagous endoparasitoid Psyllaephagus pilosus Noyes was also observed parasitizing nymphs of C. eucalypti. This parasitoid has been shown to be highly efficient in controlling this psyllid species, making unnecessary the use of any other control method.

Populational parameters of Spalangia endius Walker (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) on Pupae of Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) treated with two strains of Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. (Deuteromycetes) Neotropical Entomology
Lecuona,Roberto; Crespo,Diana; La Rossa,Francisco.
The parasitoid Spalangia endius Walker is an efficient controller of Dipteran pupae, such as Musca domestica L. The entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuil. is a regulator of insect populations, including these synanthropic pests. The aim of this work was to explore the possibilities of utilizing both agents in a combined form for the biocontrol of the domestic fly. Recently formed M. domestica pupae were inoculated by immersion in conidia suspension (10(8) conidia/ml) with two strains of B. bassiana (Bb6 and Bb10). The inoculated pupae were offered to the female parasitoid. In one bioassay they were offered pupae inoculated a single day and in other, pupae inoculated the following day as well. In both bioassays non inoculated (control)...

Insecticide selectivity to the parasitic mite Acarophenax lacunatus (Cross & Krantz) (Prostigmata: Acarophenacidae) on Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabr.) (Coleoptera: Bostrichidae) Neotropical Entomology
Gonçalves,José R.; Faroni,Lêda R.D'A.; Guedes,Raul N.C.; Oliveira,Carlos R.F. de.
The presence of natural enemies in stored grains and the need of pest control alternatives led to the assessment of the effect of insecticides on the mite species Acarophenax lacunatus (Cross & Krantz), an egg parasite of the stored grain pest Rhyzopertha dominica (Fabr.). The insecticides bifenthrin, deltamethrin, pirimiphos-methyl and fenitrothion were tested at 0.4, 0.5, 0.8 and 10 ppm, respectively. Insecticide treated wheat grains were spread in petri dishes and infested with 25 adults of R. dominica. Seven days later, three mites were added to each dish, in four replicates. The number of adults of R. dominica, grain weight loss and instantaneous rate of increase (r i) of A. lacunatus were lower when the grain was treated with deltamethrin....

Diapause in fruit fly parasitoids in the Recôncavo Baiano, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Carvalho,Romulo da S..
Diapause has been poorly investigated in tephritid fruit flies and in associated parasitoids in tropical regions. In this work, diapause in larval-pupal parasitoids of fruit flies is reported for the region of the Reconcavo Baiano, Brazil. Diapause was recorded for individuals of four native species [Doryctobracon areolatus (Szépligeti), Utetes anastrephae (Viereck), Opius sp. (Hymenoptera: Braconidae), Aganaspis pelleranoi (Brethes) (Hymenoptera: Figitidae)] and of one exotic braconid [Diachasmimorpha longicaudata Ashmead]. Diapausing parasitoids were obtained from fruit fly puparia in fruits collected between November 1998 and April 2000. In all, 1.4% of individuals underwent diapause, being D. areolatus the most frequent. The development time for this...

Discovery and development of biological agents to control crop pests Neotropical Entomology
Slininger,Patricia J.; Behle,Robert W.; Jackson,Mark A.; Schisler,David A..
Thousands of potential microbial biocontrol agents have been isolated from agricultural fields and crops during research over the last 80 years, yet only a few are in commercial use. Recently, public health and safety concerns about the environmental impact of chemical pesticides have led to consideration of biological control as a natural approach to maintaining crop health. Despite environmental incentives and strong research efforts, commercialization of biocontrol agents has been slow to evolve. The momentum of the chemical industry is difficult to shift, and fermentation processes tend to be more expensive to operate than synthetic chemical processes.Yet there is a demand for biological control products, especially in agricultural niche markets, where...

Atividade tóxica de isolados de Bacillus Thuringiensis a larvas de Aedes Aegypti (l.) (diptera: culicidae) Neotropical Entomology
Costa,Juliana R V da; Rossi,Juliana R; Marucci,Suzana C; Alves,Eliane C da C; Volpe,Haroldo X L; Ferraudo,Antonio S; Lemos,Manoel V F; Desidério,Janete A.
Aedes aegypti (L.), the main vector of dengue fever in Brazil, has been controlled with the use of massive chemical products, contributing to the development of resistance and decreasing the insect control efficiency. The control of dipterans with bioinsecticides based on Bacillus thuringiensis has been satisfactory, due to the production of insecticidal proteins denominated Cry (crystal), Cyt (cytolytic) toxins and Chi (chitinase), and to the synergistic effects among them. The present work aimed to select B. thuringiensis isolates efficient against A. aegypti larvae. A bacterial collection containing 1,073 isolates of B. thuringiensis, obtained from different locations of Brazilian territory, had the DNA isolated and submitted to PCR amplifications using...

Predacious mites in papaya (Carica papaya L.) orchards: in search of a biological control agent of phytophagous mite pests Neotropical Entomology
Collier,Karin F.S.; Lima,Jose O.G. de; Albuquerque,Gilberto S..
This study was conducted to search for potential mite predators to control phytophagous mites in papaya orchards. Bimonthly surveys, from January 1999 to February 2000, were carried out in two orchards, one in Silva Jardim (RJ), where pests are naturally controlled, and one at Linhares (ES), where pests are chemically controlled. All mite species collected from buds, new leaves, old leaves, and floral buttons of papaya trees and from weed leaves were quantified and identified to at least family level. Despite the relatively diverse mite fauna, we found representatives of only one family of predacious mites, i.e. Phytoseiidae. Among these, Neoseiulus idaeus Denmark & Muma was the most abundant and frequent during all seasons in the Linhares orchard,...
