BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers of the brain. Malignant traits of glioblastoma cells include elevated migration, proliferation and survival capabilities. Galectins are unconventionally secreted glycan-binding proteins that modulate processes of cell adhesion, migration, proliferation and apoptosis by interacting with beta-galactosides of cell surface glycoproteins and the extracellular matrix. Galectin-8 is one of the galectins highly expressed in glioblastoma cells. It has a unique selectivity for terminally sialylated glycans recently found enhanced in these highly malignant cells. Many Neartic seabirds migrate to South America for the non-breeding season, using several key stopover and wintering sites along the Atlantic coast. The Stercorarius pomarinus is a widely distributed seabird found in every Ocean. It is a migratory bird from northern North America that flies southwards. However, there is little information about the occurrence of Stercorarius pomarinus along the São Paulo State coast. The birds at Ilha Comprida beach (São Paulo State, Brazil): a multivariate approach Biota Neotropica

Birds were censused weekly from January 1999 to January 2001 along Ilha Comprida beach, a barrier island off São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. To evaluate the similarity in the bird's species composition among the weekly surveys, species counts data were arranged on a data matrix with 144 weekly surveys, analyzed following a multivariate analysis protocol. We counted a total of 205,399 individuals and 52 species. Migratory birds were an important component of the avifauna (maximum N = 21,294 individuals and 14 species). The largest numbers of birds were observed during summer, when Nearctic migrants arrive. Upstream guppies (Poecilia reticulata, Peters, 1859) go against the flow Biota Neotropica

Guppies (Poecilia reticulata Peters 1859) in lakes and from captive-bred populations are predicted to show little rheotaxis compared to conspecifics in a stream environment that are regularly exposed to flash floods associated with involuntary downstream migration. Here we test this hypothesis using an artificial stream, examining guppies of two wild riverine populations, one lake population, and one ornamental strain. Guppies from the most upstream riverine habitat show the most pronounced rheotaxis and are less likely to be swept downstream during flooding events. Five species of birds were recorded for the first time in Malpelo Island. With this information, the total number of birds recorded in the island ascends to 65 species. The new bird records are Upland Sandpiper, Semipalmated Sandpiper, Surfbird, Great Crested Flycatcher and the Northern Waterthrush.

Four seasons abundance changes of Zalophus californianus californianus (Lesson 1828), Allen, 1880, in the Gulf of California, Mexico BABT

This paper describes for the first time the relative abundance, population structure and numeric variation of California sea lions in the Gulf of California, Mexico, during four different seasons. The relative abundance estimates varied from the highest 17,162 sea lions in July of 1990 (summer) to a minimum 7,470 in February of 1992 (winter), representing a reduction of 10,000 sea lions. Hypotheses about the migration of part of the population to the Pacific Ocean were compared and discussed against their residency inside the Gulf, and seasonal dispersion of individuals along this inner sea.

Role of previous stimulation on the neutrophil migration protects against the lethal effect of Salmonella typhimurium Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.

The intraperitoneal inoculation of 3.8 x 10(9) CFU of alive Salmonella typhimurium caused 100% mortality in rats. In these animals a small number of neutrophils migrated to the peritoneal cavity. The intraperitoneal inoculation of the animals with thioglycollate (Tg, 90 mg), carrageenin (Cg, 500 mu g), or killed S. typhimurium (KS, 1.9 x 10(9) CFU) 24 hours before challenge with alive S. typhimurium caused a significant neutrophil migration to the peritoneal cavity (determined 6 hours after challenge) and protected the animals against the lethal effect of the bacteria at a rate of 50%, 83% and 80%, respectively. However, similar treatment of the animals with brain heart infusion broth (BHI, S. typhimurium grout medium) protected the animals by only 23%....

Glucocorticoids (Gc) influence the differentiation of neural crest-derived cells such as those composing sympathoadrenal tumors like pheochromocytomas, as well as neuroblastomas and gangliomas. In order to obtain further information on the effects of Gc on cells evolving from the neural crest, we have used the human neuroblastoma cell line SK-N-SH to analyze: 1) the presence and the binding characteristics of Gc receptors in these cells, 2) the effect of dexamethasone (Dex) on the migration of SK-N-SH cells, and 3) the effect of Dex on the organization of the cytoskeleton of SK-N-SH cells. Integrins play crucial roles in cell adhesion, migration, and signaling by providing transmembrane links between the extracellular matrix and the cytoskeleton. Integrins cluster in macromolecular complexes to generate cell-matrix adhesions such as focal adhesions. As an active constituent of the beetle Mylabris used in traditional Chinese medicine, cantharidin is a potent and selective inhibitor of protein phosphatase 2A (PP2A) that plays a crucial role in cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and cell fate. The role and possible mechanisms exerted by cantharidin in cell growth and metastasis of breast cancer were investigated in this study. Cantharidin was found to inhibit cell viability and clonogenic potential in a time- and dose-dependent manner. Neurons of the mammalian cerebral cortex comprise two broad classes: pyramidal neurons, which project to distant targets, and the inhibitory nonpyramidal cells, the cortical interneurons. Permanent and permeable edges, where natural enemies can feed, overwinter or easily cross over, should enhance the early arrival of these predators to crops. We evaluated the abundance and species richness of coccinellids migrating to alfalfa fields adjacent to Eucalyptus, a mix of false acacia, blackberries and poplar (F-B-P), vineyards, corn and annual vegetables. From September 2007 to May 2008, we captured coccinellids in three sticky traps (2.64 m²) placed at the borders between alfalfa fields and adjacent vegetation.
