Genetic structure of natural populations of Cryptocarya moschata Nees (Lauraceae) from southeastern Brazilian Atlantic rain forest Biota Neotropica
Moraes,Pedro Luís Rodrigues de; Derbyshire,Maria Teresa Vitral de Carvalho.
This study was accomplished on a more comprehensive basis to evaluate previous questions that were raised from a preliminary article about the genetic structure of Cryptocarya moschata populations. Thus, through the analysis of 40 polymorphic allozyme loci, allele frequencies were estimated from 335 individuals of 11 natural populations of C. moschata from six hydrographic basins of São Paulo state and Serra da Estrela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Estimates of Wright's F statistics were done through the analysis of variance, presenting average values of <img border=0 width=32 height=32 id="_x0000_i1026" src="../../../../../../img/revistas/bn/v4n1/img/a04car(f).jpg" align=absmiddle > or = 0.352, <img border=0 width=32 height=32 id="_x0000_i1027"...

Reproduction of the greater bulldog bat Noctilio leporinus (Chiroptera: Noctilionidae) in a mangrove area in southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Bordignon,Marcelo Oscar; França,Adriana de Oliveira.
The reproductive pattern of the greater bulldog bat (Noctilio leporinus) was studied in southern Brazil from January to December 1999. The morphological characteristics of their reproductive organs were recorded monthly, through histological analysis of testes and ovaries. Those data were correlated with forearm size and body mass, as well as with external reproductive characteristics. The diameter of the seminiferous tubule increased proportionately to testis mass and body weight, and larger males had greater testis mass. Sexually mature males were recorded throughout the year. Ovary histology revealed that females ovulate between July and December. Lactating females were recorded in nearly every month of the year. Noctilio leporinus has a bimodal...

Döge,Jonas da Silva; Gottschalk,Marco Silva; Bizzo,Luís Eduardo Maestrelli; Oliveira,Sabrina Cassimiro Fonseca de; Schmitz,Hermes José; Valente,Vera Lúcia da Silva; Hofmann,Paulo Roberto Petersen.
The present paper brings together survey data from nine collection sites in Santa Catarina state, southern Brazil. Samples were obtained during about four years in forested, coastal and urban areas. Flies were attracted by fermented banana baits and captured in traps. Among the species of the genus Zygothrica Wiedemann 1830 collected, Zygothrica apopoeyi Burla 1956, Z. bilineata (Williston 1896), Z. dispar (Wiedemann 1830), Z./ lanceolata Burla 1956, Z. nigropleura Grimaldi 1987, and Z. poeyi (Sturtevant 1921) were recorded for the first time in Santa Catarina state and, except for Z. bilineata, also in southern Brazil. Apart from these species, we also collected Zygothrica hypandriata Burla 1956, Z. orbitalis (Sturtevant 1916) (as Z. parilis), Z....

Population Structure of Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei (Bour, 1973) (Testudines:Chelidae) in the Cerrado of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Brito,Elizângela Silva de; Strussmann,Christine; Penha,Jerry Magno Ferreira.
Studies on population structure of freshwater turtles belonging to the family Chelidae are scarce in Brazil. Herein we describe the structure of a population of the chelid Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei in a Cerrado area in the municipality of Chapada dos Guimarães, Mato Grosso, Brazil. A total of 80 individuals were captured in five collecting sites, from January to March 2007: 42 adult females, 27 adult males, and 11 juveniles with undetermined sex. Among 80 individuals, 24% were recaptured, at least once. This is the first attempt to estimate the size of a population of Mesoclemmys vanderhaegei. Our results suggest that additional sampling efforts are needed for more accurate estimates of population structure. Nevertheless, they surely provide minimum values...

A new synonym for Micropholis gardneriana (Sapotaceae) with complete description, anatomy and distribution notes Biota Neotropica
Ferreira,Angélica Cândida; Araújo,Josiane Silva; Almeida Jr,Eduardo Bezerra de; Zickel,Carmen Silvia.
Abstract: In the present work, we synonymize Micropholis compta under M. gardneriana due to the overlap of morphoanatomical characters and the absence of distinctive attributes, verified during taxonomic and anatomical study of the genus Micropholis for Brazil. This study provides an updated description of M. gardneriana, including macro- and micro-morphological data, a distribution map, and comments on conservation status, ecological and taxonomy.

Wild pig (Sus scrofa L.) occupancy patterns in the Brazilian Atlantic forest Biota Neotropica
Hegel,Carla Grasiele Zanin; Santos,Luane Reis dos; Pichorim,Mauro; Marini,Miguel Ângelo.
Abstract: Despite the great impacts of invasive wild pig (Sus scrofa) to natural ecosystems, habitat use by this species in the neotropics remains poorly studied. Here, we investigated the effects of local habitat and landscape covariates (vegetation types, running watercourses and roads) on occupancy patterns of wild pig in the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil. We used single season occupancy modeling to estimate detection (p) and occupancy (ψ) probabilities, using 8-day camera-trap monitoring of 100 sampled sites. The cameras detected wild pig in 64 sites (naïve occupancy = 64 %). The four best models explained 72.7 % of the occupancy patterns, and the top model (with "water" variable) had a weight of 28.5 %. Even though none of the tested variables...

Discovery of Euglossa (Euglossa) cognata Moure (Apidae: Euglossini) in the Platina Basin, Mato Grosso state, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Anjos-Silva,Evandson José dos.
By attracting male orchid bees with eight chemical baits in the gallery forest of the Parque Nacional da Chapada dos Guimarães, southern Mato Grosso state, Brazil, I found several males belongs to all Euglossini bee genera. Male euglosine bees were collected monthly using an entomological net as they arrived at the baits. From September 2003 to July 2005, the baits were applied to absorbent paper pads from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. From 24 collections, a total of 264 males were captured, spread throughout the five genera of the tribe and belonging to 30 valid species. Of all the males collected, only one was Euglossa cognata Moure, reported to occur from Costa Rica to southern Brazil, and herein recorded to the Platina Basin for the first time. The results...

Feeding ecology of carnivores (Mammalia, Carnivora) in Atlantic Forest remnants, Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Rocha-Mendes,Fabiana; Mikich,Sandra Bos; Quadros,Juliana; Pedro,Wagner André.
The diet of some sympatric carnivore species in three Atlantic Forest remnants of Southern Brazil was studied in order to assess their food niche. We conducted monthly field trips between February 2003 and January 2004 to collect fecal samples that were subsequently examined together with others collected sporadically between November 1994 and January 2003. Of the 416 samples analysed, 198 had the "author" species identified through microscopic analysis guard hairs, which revealed the presence of 10 carnivores and some information about their diet. Puma yagouaroundi had the largest dietary niche breadth, whereas Leopardus tigrinus and Nasua nasua showed the lowest values. Extensive niche overlap was observed between L. tigrinus and N. nasua, L. tigrinus...

Jiménez-Mejías,Pedro; Fabbroni,Mariela; Donadío,Sabina; Rodríguez-Palacios,Giovanni E; Hilpold,Andreas; Martín-Bravo,Santiago; Waterway,Marcia J; Roalson,Eric H.
We present relevant data about the taxonomy and distribution of 20 species of the genus Carex in the Neotropics from the Caribbean region to Patagonia. We provide a total of 19 new records, two of them for species not previously recorded from South America, ten species newly reported from different countries, and seven species here reported as new regional records in Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. We lectotypify nine species names (C. brehmeri, C. catharinensis, C. ecuadorica, C. firmicaulis, C. fuscula, C. mandoniana, C. phleoides, C. polysticha, and C. subantarctica) and epitypify one of these names (C. fuscula). Finally, we propose Carex koyamae as a new synonym of Carex phleoides.

A new study method of microhabitat structure of small mammals BJB
CERQUEIRA,R.; FREITAS,S. R..
The variables in habitat studies are usually transformed in such a way that they become abstractions and intuition is lost. We tested a new method for the analysis of habitat using data collected in a grid laid at the "restinga de Maricá", in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. Thirty-seven microhabitat variables were measured at each trap station. We assume that these variables characterize the microhabitat structure at the moment when measurements were taken. The data are transformed in 3 ways: (1) the averages of the measured variables were calculated, as usual in habitat studies; (2) the data are transformed in densities per area in square meters without reduction in the number of variables; and (3) we calculated the natural logarithms of the data thus...
