Bio-fuel Chains – An Overview on the Structure and the Value Chain Organization AgEcon
Dautzenberg, Kirsti; Hanf, Jon Henrich.
Structural change in the agricultural sector as well as in the whole agricultural value chain is an ongoing dynamic process and creates a number of diverse phenomena. The EU Strategy for Biofuels (2006) and the Biomass action plan (2005) set a clear signal that the EU wishes to establish and to support the bio energy-industry. The perceivable aim of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) consists in reducing food production and in enlarging the non-food production. Another driver for the attractiveness of bio-energy and bio-fuel production is the recent development of prices of crude oil and natural gas. Furthermore bio-energy is seen as one of the key options to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and substitute fossil fuels.

Impacts of U.S. Sugar Policy and the North American Free Trade Agreement in North American Sugar Containing Products AgEcon
Pruitt, J. Ross; Tilley, Daniel S..
Sugar is one of the most protected agricultural commodities in the United States and other countries around the world through the use of production allotments, preferential marketing agreements, and tariffs. These protectionist measures lead to increased input costs for manufacturers of candies and soft drinks. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) has in part altered the nature of sugar trade throughout the North American continent. This paper presents a game theoretical Cournot model which illustrates how trade in sugar containing products and the location of sugar containing product manufacturers in North America is likely to be impacted by the combined effects of U.S. sugar policy and NAFTA. Current international agreements which affect...

Impact of Farmland Preservation Programs on the Rate of Urban Development AgEcon
Brinkman, Blondel A.; Miller, Douglas J.; Nickerson, Cynthia J..
Due to high losses of agricultural land in urbanizing areas over the past several years, state and local governments have adopted zoning regulations, right-to-farm ordinances, preferential property tax programs, and other means to protect agricultural land resources. Critics of the farmland preservation efforts note that these programs may only delay the ultimate conversion of farmland to urban uses and may simply shift urban development to neighboring areas (positive spillover effects). An alternative means of permanently protecting farmland is provided by purchase of development rights (PDR) programs, which enroll acreage from landowners who voluntarily sell the development rights to their farmland. Although ownership and all other property rights are...

Decoupled Programs, Payment Incidence, and Factor Markets: Evidence from Market Experiments AgEcon
Bastian, Christopher T.; Nagler, Amy M.; Menkhaus, Dale J.; Ehmke, Mariah D.; Whitaker, James B.; Young, C. Edwin.
We use laboratory market experiments to assess the impact of asymmetric knowledge of a per-unit subsidy and the effect of a decoupled annual income subsidy on factor market outcomes. Results indicate that when the subsidy is tied to the factor as a per-unit subsidy, regardless of full or asymmetric knowledge for market participants, subsidized factor buyers distribute nearly 22 percent of the subsidy to factor sellers. When the subsidy is fully decoupled from the factor, as is the case with the annual payment, payment incidence is mitigated and prices are not statistically different from the no-policy treatment.

SALES RESPONSES TO RECALLS FOR LISTERIA MONOCYTOGENES: EVIDENCE FROM BRANDED READY-TO-EAT MEATS AgEcon
Thomsen, Michael R.; Shiptsova, Rimma; Hamm, Sandra J..
Empirical models are used to measure sales losses experienced by frankfurter brands following a recall for a foodborne pathogen. Recalled brands experience a 22 to 27 percent sales decline after a recall. Brand recovery occurs within 4 to 5 months after a recall. Non-recalled brands do not experience sales losses.

Determinants of Agricultural Landowners’ Willingness to Supply Open Space Through Conservation Easements AgEcon
Miller, Ashley D.; Bastian, Christopher T.; McLeod, Donald M.; Keske, Catherine M.; Hoag, Dana L..
Open space provides a range of benefits to many people of a community, beyond the benefits that accrue to private landowners. Parks and natural areas can be used for recreation; wetlands and forests supply storm-water drainage and wildlife habitat; farms and forests provide aesthetic benefits to surrounding residents. Moreover, undeveloped land can give relief from congestion. Agricultural lands are an important source of open space, but many of these lands are under great development pressure. One tool that is currently being used to aid in the preservation of open space by landowners is conservation easements. The rate of land protection by state and local land trusts has tripled since the beginning of the decade, and the West is the fastest growing...

Fakayode, S.B.; Babatunde, Raphael O.; Olowogbon, S.T.; Adesuyi, W.S..
The study examined beekeeping activities in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Specifically the study appraised the costs and returns structure of beekeeping activities by beneficiaries of the ESACA scheme, examined the constraints to beekeeping under the scheme and outside the scheme and identified factors that affect beekeeping under the scheme and outside the scheme. A total of 150 beekeeper households were selected; 75 households each for ESACA beneficiary and non-beneficiary respondents across communities popularly known for beekeeping in Ekiti state. Descriptive statistics, costs and returns, regression and Kruscalwallis analyses were employed for data analysis. Beekeeping was found to be more profitable under the ESACA scheme than outside the scheme with returns...

On Measuring the Value of a Nonmarket Good Using Market Data AgEcon
Bullock, David S.; Minot, Nicholas.
Our purpose is to present in detail numerical methods of measuring the value of nonmarket goods using market data, under either weak neutrality, weak complementarity, or any other preference restriction meeting the requirements discussed in this paper. It has been claimed in a number of places in the literature that numerical methods cannot be used to measure the value of nonmarket goods unless the very restrictive Willig conditions are satisfied. We show that this claim is mistaken, and that numerical methods can be used whether or not the Willig conditions are satisfied. Our numerical methods are more flexible than the existing analytical method because ours can be used with any Marshallian demand system.

Dinâmica econômica das flutuações na produção de cana-de-açúcar AgEcon
Satolo, Luiz Fernando; Bacchi, Mirian Rumenos Piedade.

NATIONAL DIFFERENCES IN THE UPTAKE OF AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL SCHEMES: AN EXPLANATION AgEcon
Salhofer, Klaus; Glebe, Thilo W..
The number of agri-environmental programs, as well as the share of agricultural land covered under these programs, varies significantly between EU member states. We analyze national differences in the uptake of agri-environmental programs by developing a model of countries'’ political objective function. Based on this model we identify six factors which may explain the extent to which agri-environmental policies are implemented: environmental benefits, opportunity costs of participation, financial budget pressure, the share of program expenditures financed by the EU, contribution to the EU budget, and political weight attributed to farmers'’ income. The conceptual approach is then supplemented by an empirical analysis.

Cereal Marketing and Household Market Participation in Ethiopia: The Case of Teff, Wheat and Rice AgEcon
Gebremedhin, Berhanu; Hoekstra, Dirk.
Teff, wheat and rice are becoming important market oriented crops in Ethiopia. This study aims at analyzing the market participation of farm households, market actors, market channels and determinants of household market participation for these crops. Results are based on analysis of data collected from community and household surveys in three districts in three regional states of the country in 2005. Analysis of descriptive information and econometric analysis are used. About 65 - 77% of households produce these market oriented commodities, on about 27 – 44% of the total cultivated area. About 47 – 60% of the produce of these market oriented commodities is sold. The important market places for producers of these commodities are the district town markets...

ASSESSING THE JOINT INFLUENCE OF ECOLOGICAL AND SOCIOECONOMIC DETERMINANTS OF INCREASES IN THE BUILT-ENVIRONMENT: A STUDY OF TRENDS IN CENTRAL NORTH CAROLINA AgEcon
Vance, Colin; Iovanna, Rich.
This paper advances an empirical model assessing how, over both time and space, changes in land-use respond to changing economic and ecological conditions. Focusing on Central North Carolina, a region that has undergone extensive changes in forest cover and agricultural lands over the past two decades, landscape dynamics are modeled by exploiting a spatial database that links several satellite images spanning the years 1975-1999 to a suite of socioeconomic, institutional and GIS-created explanatory variables.

Heterogeneous Production Efficiency of Specialized Swine Producers AgEcon
Tonsor, Glynn T.; Featherstone, Allen M..
This research evaluates the efficiency of swine firms differing by specialization type and employed technologies. Measures of technical, allocative, scale, economic, and overall efficiency are separately and jointly estimated for farrow-to-finish, farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, farrow-to-weanling, weanling-to-feeder, and mixed operations. Findings confirm appreciable differences in efficiency and causes of efficiency. Results suggest that overall efficiency of farrow-to-finish and farrow-to-weanling operations is on average lower than farrow-to-feeder, feeder-to-finish, and weanling-to-feeder operations. In addition, Tobit models examining how demographic factors, farm type, and input expenses influence efficiency indicate additional variation across...
