Biological control of Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar, (Diptera, Culicidae) through Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis in laboratory and field conditions Zoologia
Zequi,João A. C.; Lopes,José.
Culex (Culex) saltanensis Dyar, 1928 can become a problem in urban centers because they reproduce abundantly in ponds organically enriched. It is vector of the Plasmodium spp. and Crithidia ricadoi Sibajev et al. 1993. This research verifies the efficacy of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis on C. saltanensis in two temperature situations, both in laboratory and field conditions. LC50 for C. saltanensis immatures fourth instar, was 0.154 ppm and the LC95 was 0.248 ppm an average temperature of 25.7ºC. When exposed at a constant temperature of 12±1ºC and a photoperiod of 14L:10D, had its susceptibity decreased in 1.50 times in reation to LC50, when compared to room temperature. B. thuringiensis israelensis is highly efficient in the control of this mosquito...

O mexilhão Perna perna (Linnaeus) (Bivalvia, Mytilidae) em cultivo na Armação do Itapocoroy, Santa Catarina, Brasil Zoologia
Marenzi,Adriano W. C.; Branco,Joaquim O..

The fish assemblage in a stretch of Tibagi river was studied during the period of one year, throught monthly sampling. It was observed that four fish species (Schizodon intermedius Garavello & Britski, 1990, Acestrorhynchus lacustris Reinhardt, 1874, Pimelodus maculatus Lacépède, 1803 and Steindachnerina insculpta Fernandez-Yepez, 1948) were very frequent and they represent all the main trophic groups. In order to characterize feeding activity, fat storage and reproduction the means degree of repletion, fat and maturation, obtained for each species in each month were compared among the four fish species. Steindachnerina insculpta, a detritivovous species was the one with the highest feeding activity while A. lacustris, a piscivorous fish, showed...

Gonzalez,Manoel Mateus Bueno.
Both fungai and algal infections have been reported in elasmobranchs. This study describes the first record of hyphalomycosis infection in Mustelus schmitii (Springer, 1940). The data was obtained through the examination of one animal in captivity and ninety five in their natural environment. Was also detected four cases of Fusarium solani infection. The impact of these diseases on the wild population is unknown.

The adjustment of Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) to food deprivation Zoologia
Ades,César; Kolde,Renate Edla.
The adjustment of Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae) to intermittent food deprivation was investigated. Animals subjected either to 24-hr or to 48-hr repeated periods of deprivation successfully compensated, showing (1) increases in post-fast intake relatively to the intake by control animals; (2) rapid recovery of the baseline levels of body wieght. The regulatory ability of C. callosus is comparable, in such respects, to the ability of the common rat and some other rodents but it is remarkably different from the hamster's.

Diurnal and seasonal variability in bird counts in a forest fragment in southeastern Brazil Zoologia
Antunes,Alexsander Z..
Diurnal variation in detection can influence bird census results. I measured variation in daily and seasonal detections of birds in a forest fragment at Barreiro Rico ranch, Anhembi, state of São Paulo. Birds were recorded on transects of unlimited distance, sampled one day per month, dawn to dusk, between December 2000 and March 2001 (rainy season) and between May and August 2001 (dry season). Significant daily variation in detection occurred during the rainy season, with most detections between dawn and 9 h. In the dry season detections declined for total numbers of individuals and species and most detections occurred during late morning and mid afternoon. Detection patterns might reflect seasonal variation in bird behavior rather than seasonal variation...

Morphological study of the testes of the dove Columba livia (Gmelin) (Columbidae, Columbiformes) Zoologia
Maruch,Sandra Maria das Graças; Teles,Maria Eloiza de Oliveira; Ribeiro,Maria das Graças.
Known as "domestic dove", the Columba livia (Gmelin, 1789) is a columbidae species widely distributed in Brazil, whose reproductive biology has been studied by many researchers. The testes of 12 Columba livia males were collected and prepared for histologic examination under an optical microscope, the results of which were analysed and photographed. The tunica albuginea that covers the testes consists of a thick, not very cellular layer of dense connective tissue. Groups of interstitial cells with typical morphological appearance and surrounded by loose, well vascularized connective tissue are observable within the organ, between the seminiferous tubules. The seminiferous tubules are thick, intensely wound and, when seen in cross section, show Sertoli...

Morfologia y biologia de Bostryx conspersus (Sowerby) (Mollusca, Bulimulidae) en las lomas costeras del Peru Central Zoologia
Ramírez,Rina.
Morphological and biological observations on populations of the land snail Bostryx conspersus, in three "Lomas"of the Central Coast of Peru, were carried out between 1979 and 1982. Three shell color varieties of B. conspersus are reponed herein, as well as its aestivation, activity and reproduction strategies. The possible interactions of B. conspersus with a dipteron (Scaptomyza sp.; Drosophilidae) and a nematode species are also discussed.

Foraging behavior and microhabitats used by black lion tamarins, Leontopithecus chrysopygus (Mikan) (Primates, Callitrichidae) Zoologia
Passos,Fernando de Camargo; Keuroghlian,Alexine.
Foraging in the Black Lion Tamarin (L. chrysopygus Mikan, 1823) was observed in the Caetetus Ecological Station, São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, during 83 days between November 1988 to October 1990. These tamarins use manipulative, specific-site foraging behavior. When searching for animal prey items, they examine a variety of microhabitats (dry palm leaves, twigs, under loose bark, in tree cavities). These microhabitats were spatially dispersed among different forest macrohabitats such as swamp forests and dry forested areas. These data indicated that the prey foraging behavior of L. chrysopygus was quite variable, and they used a wide variety of microhabitats, different of the other lion tamarin species.
