Pelagic and littoral cladocerans (Crustacea, Anomopoda and Ctenopoda) from reservoirs of the Northwest of São Paulo State, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Castilho-Noll,Maria Stela Maioli; Câmara,Carolina Figueira; Chicone,Maira Favaron; Shibata,Érico Hissashi.
There are few studies on the zooplankton from the northwestern region of São Paulo State, Brazil, compared to other regions of the State. Cladocerans are a very representative zooplankton group with high species diversity. Most of this diversity can be found at littoral zones of lakes and reservoirs, especially those occupied by macrophytes. This study was part of a thematic project FAPESP/BIOTA Program - The Virtual Institute of Biodiversity (www.biotasp.org.br), and its aim is to catalogue and analyze the distribution of cladoceran species (Crustacea, Anomopoda and Ctenopoda) in pelagic and littoral zones from small reservoirs in the northwest of the São Paulo State, in dry and rainy seasons. Zooplankton samplings were carried out in littoral and pelagic...

Pereira,Jussara Paula Rezende; Schiavetti,Alexandre.

Metzger,Jean Paul; Alves,Luciana F.; Pardini,Renata; Dixo,Marianna; Nogueira,André do Amaral; Negrão,Mônica de Faria Franco; Martensen,Alexandre Camargo; Catharino,Eduardo Luís Martins.

Composition and natural history of a Cerrado snake assemblage at Itirapina, São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sawaya,Ricardo Jannini; Marques,Otavio Augusto Vuolo; Martins,Marcio.
Neotropical snake assemblages present high species richness and complex structures. The Cerrado is the second largest biome in Brazil, and was included among the 25 World's biodiversity hotspots. In southeastern Brazil, the remnant Cerrado areas have suffered intense destruction, and presently less than 2% of Cerrado natural vegetation remain in São Paulo state. Virtually no detailed study on Cerrado snakes was carried out in this region. The Itirapina region has one of the last well preserved remnants of open cerrado in São Paulo state. Our purpose in this work was the study of natural history and composition of the Cerrado snakes of Itirapina region. We performed an extensive field sampling combining six sampling methods in Estação Ecológica de Itirapina...

Description of diet of pelagic fish in the southwestern Atlantic, Brazil Biota Neotropica
Gorni,Guilherme Rossi; Goitein,Roberto; Amorim,Alberto Ferreira de.
This study reveals the food composition of pelagic fishes living in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. As such more common pelagic species are considered to be top predators, the study proposes to know what constitutes their main food. Fish are not commonly found within their stomach contents, but instead, cephalopods are their most common food. As can be observed, Teuthida cephalopods compose their principal diet. The stomach contents of specimens of Xiphias gladius, Thunnus albacares, T. obesus, T. alalunga, Isurus oxyrinchus and Alopias superciliosus caught during July 2007 to June 2009 by using tuna longliners were studied. Teuthida cephalopods constitute the main food item for the three tuna species, while X. gladius feeds mainly on Ommastrephidae...

Flood-mediated use of habitat by large and midsized mammals in the Brazilian Pantanal Biota Neotropica
Lázari,Patrick Ricardo De; Santos-Filho,Manoel dos; Canale,Gustavo Rodrigues; Graipel,Maurício Eduardo.
The Brazilian Pantanal comprises a mosaic of forest and field environments harbouring a rich community of large and midsized mammals that are adapted to the annual hydrological cycle. Here we evaluated richness and composition of large and midsized mammals inhabiting forested and open habitats affected by yearly floods in the Pantanal in Cáceres from October 2009 to September 2010. We compared these communities in marshes, dry forests and riparian forests based on 640 camera-traps.nights, sights, tracks, faecal samples and interviews. We also compared results in a private land (Descalvados Farm) and in a protected area (Taiamã Ecological Station). In total, we sampled 26 large and midsized mammals, including five threatened and two near threatened species....

Ingestion of catfish by freshwater stingray: possible mistake or inexperience Biota Neotropica
Garrone Neto,Domingos; Uieda,Virgínia Sanches.
We report an individual of the freshwater stingray Potamotrygon falkneri caught with a decomposing catfish, Pimelodella gracilis, stuck in its oral cavity. The ingestion of catfishes by stingrays is possibly rendered difficult or hazardous due to the serrated spines on the dorsal and pectoral fins of this prey type. There are at least two possible explanations for the rotting catfish we found stuck in the mouth of a potamotrygonid ray: mistake or inexperience of the analyzed specimen. Both possibilities may be due to the fact that the ray was a young individual.

Understory structure in two successional stages of a Semi-deciduous Seasonal Forest remnant of Southern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Coelho,Geraldo Ceni; Rigo,Marivana da Silva; Libardoni,Juliana Boniatti; Oliveira,Rosemeri de; Benvenuti-Ferreira,Glaci.
The knowledge of structure and composition of forest strata contributes to understanding the conservation status and dynamics of plant communities. The study of forest understory is important to the knowledge of the succession process. The Seasonal Subtropical Forest remnant named Mato do Silva (27º 55'26" S and 53º 53'15" W) was studied aiming to describe the structure of understory in the late successional forest (LF) and in the young secondary forest (SF), an 11 years old post-agricultural site with canopy dominance of Ateleia glazioveana Baill. The phytosociological survey was carried out through the point quarter method and included individuals of tree and shrub species from 0.5 to 3.0 m of height. The sampling consisted of 384 individuals in LF (67...

Veredas and their use by birds in the Cerrado, South America: a review Biota Neotropica
Tubelis,Dárius Pukenis.
In the Cerrado, veredas are linear physiognomies that occur on hydromorphic soil usually along narrow water courses. They often growth on flat terrain or near headwaters. They are characterised by the abundance of buriti palms (Mauritia flexuosa) that growth over other trees, numerous shrubs and a dense herbaceous stratum. Despite being common landscape elements through the Cerrado's extension, the use of veredas by birds has not been examined in detail. This study aimed to review studies of birds and veredas in the Cerrado. Publications (n = 25) reported the use of veredas by 261 bird species. Only 13 of them had aspects of their biology (reproduction and feeding) studied in detail. Veredas are poorly used by Cerrado's endemic species, but are the major...

Checklist dos Entoprocta do Estado de São Paulo, Brasil Biota Neotropica
Vieira,Leandro Manzoni; Migotto,Alvaro Esteves.

Freshwater fishes of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses and adjacent areas Biota Neotropica
Brito,Pâmella Silva de; Guimarães,Erick Cristofore; Ferreira,Beldo Rywllon Abreu; Ottoni,Felipe Polivanov; Piorski,Nivaldo Magalhães.
Abstract: We present here an embracing freshwater fish inventory of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses and adjacent areas, reporting 49 fish species, 33 of which were identified accurately at the species level, representing ten orders and 25 fish families that range from obligate freshwater to estuarine organisms. This number of species is much larger than two previous studies for the park, each reporting just 12 and 33 fishes occurring on freshwater environments. Among the 49 freshwater species recorded in this study, 14 are new records for the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, and just one corresponds to an introduced species. Some of the 14 new records in the Parque...

Validated cleaner: the cuculid bird Crotophaga ani picks ticks and pecks at sores of capybaras in southeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Sazima,Ivan.
Information on the role of smooth-billed anis (Crotophaga ani) as tick-pickers on mammals remains controversial. I record here these birds removing ticks and pecking at wounds of capybaras (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris) in a small reserve at Campinas, São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. The birds inspected the mammals’ skin, both in places with and without hair. The hair was parted with bill movements, and ticks were removed by vigorous pulling. The birds also pecked at open or healing sores, from which they extracted small portions of blood clots and dead tissue. The capybaras appeared oblivious to the birds’ activity. Even in the case that the cleaning behaviour is restricted to some bird individuals and populations, or places and periods, this record validates...

Reproductive biology of Synallaxis albescens (Aves: Furnariidae) in the cerrado of central Brazil Biota Neotropica
Marini,Miguel Ângelo; Rodrigues,Sheila Silva; Silveira,Mariana Batista; Greeney,Harold Francis.
Understanding the causes and consequences of variation in reproductive strategies is a central theme in studies of avian life history evolution. This study describes the reproductive biology of Synallaxis albescens (Furnariidae) in the cerrado biome of central Brazil. We monitored 35 nests during the 2003 to 2011 breeding seasons, visiting them every 2-4 days. Synallaxis albescens breeds from mid-September to mid-January, builds a retort-shaped nest, and generally lays three immaculate white eggs. Eggs weighed 1.75 g and measured 19.7 by 14.4 mm. Most nests studied were in open cerrado or shrub grassland at an average height above the ground of 0.3 m, with a preference for Davilla elliptica (Dilleniaceae) shrubs as a nesting substrate. Incubation period...
