Influence of photoperiod on Orius thyestes Herring (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) reproduction and longevity Neotropical Entomology
Carvalho,Alessandra R.; Bueno,Vanda H.P.; Pedroso,Elizabeth C.; Kon,Leonardo I.; Diniz,Alexandre J.F.; Silva,Robson J..
Several species of Orius Wolff are used in biological control of thrips in protected cultivations in temperate regions, but some of them show reproductive diapause, compromising the efficiency of these agents of biological control. There are no reports on the biology of the neotropical species Orius thyestes Herring under different environmental conditions. The purpose of this work was to investigate the influence of photoperiod on reproduction and longevity of this predator. Nymphs were kept in petri dishes in climatic chambers at 28 ± 1°C, 70 ± 10% RH and under the photoperiods of 12L:12D, 11L:13D, 10L:14D e 09L:15D. The mating adults were kept in petri dishes with Bidens pilosa L. Asteraceae inflorescences as oviposition substracts and eggs of Anagasta...

Geographical transition zone of Solenopsis fire ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) and Pseudacteon fly parasitoids (Diptera: Phoridae) in the state of São Paulo, Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Pesquero,MA; Dias,AMPM.
Solenopsis saevissima (Smith) and Solenopsis invicta Buren are the most abundant and widely distributed fire ants in Brazil. The occurrence of the two fire ant species and of their parasitoids Pseudacteon spp. is described for a climatic and phytophysiognomic transition area in the state of São Paulo. Both fire ant species have a parapatric distribution, apparently determined by the climate: S. saevissima predominates in the north part of São Paulo (Aw climate), while S. invicta in the south (Cfa climate). A sympatric area is observed between the latitudes 21ºS and 23ºS. Two different communities of parasitic decapitating flies were associated with S. saevissima in the north and with S. invicta in the south, with a sympatric area in the municipality of São...

Reproductive biology and longevity of Euplectrus ronnai (Brèthes) (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) Neotropical Entomology
Yamamoto,Ana C.; Foerster,Luís A..
The larval ectoparasitoid Euplectrus ronnai (Brèthes) is one of the components of a species complex that attacks the armyworm Mythimna (Pseudaletia) sequax Franclemont (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae). No data are available on the fecundity, longevity and host instar preference of E. ronnai, what prompted the conduction of this research. No parasitism occurred on the first and sixth instars of the host, and a positive relationship was found between host instar and the number of parasitoid eggs/host, which ranged from 1.5 on third- instar hosts to 3.6 on fifth instars. Females of E. ronnai showed a preference for either the fourth or fifth instar of M. sequax. There were no significant differences in the developmental time of the parasitoid, sex ratio, mean number...

Molecular Tool for Identification of Closely Related Species of Trichogramma (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae): T. rojasi Nagaraja & Nagarkatti and T. lasallei Pinto Neotropical Entomology
CIOCIOLA JR.,AMÉRICO I.; QUERINO,RANYSE B.; ZUCCHI,ROBERTO A.; STOUTHAMER,RICHARD.
The sequence of the ITS2 (internally transcribed spacer 2) region of the rDNA was used to identify two closely related Trichogramma species: T. rojasi and T. lasallei, the second species recently reported in Brazil. The DNA of the samples was extracted using Chelex 100. The PCR product was linked to a pGEM-T® vector and both were then placed into Petri dishes to grow white colonies, which demonstrate the correct ligation between the vector and the DNA. From these colonies, 10µl were purified and sequenced using a special kit, and the sequences aligned using the ESEE 3.0 software. Specific primers were efficient to amplify the ITS2 rDNA region of the Brazilian Trichogramma. The sequence of each species differed in length and in nucleotide position, showing...

Effects of Sugar Supply on Longevity and Progeny Production of an Aphid Parasitoid, Aphidius ervi (Hymeno-ptera: Aphidiidae) OAK
林, 佐季; 仲島, 義貴.
We investigated effects of sugar solution on adult longevity, progeny production and progeny sex ratio of Aphidius ervi in the presence and absence of host aphids. When female parasitoids were provided with 50% glucose–fructose solution in 1 : 1 ratio, they lived approximately twice longer than those provided with distilled water, irrespective of host aphid provision. The same effect of sugar solution was also observed on progeny production. When the parasitoid was fed sugar solution, its lifetime progeny production approximately doubled in comparison to that provided with water, whereas daily progeny production did not differ. Total number of female progeny did not differ between adult female provided with water and sugar solution, but significantly...

We studied the effects of plant species on the development of Wollastoniella rotunda under laboratory conditions. We reared newly emerged first instars of W. rotunda on eggs of Ephestia kuehniella together with one of four different plant leaves, eggplant, cucumber, kidney bean and tomato. As a control, we used either moist cotton wool or nothing instead of the plant leaves. In the absence of water, first instars died within a day, suggesting that the predator needs to acquire water from plants in order to survive. Survival rates of W. rotunda differed among plant species, being lowest on cucumber leaves when compared to eggplant or tomato leaves. The duration of instar development was not affected by plant species. When offered moist cotton wool, bugs...

The current study was conducted to investigate the pathogenicity and its mode of action by Verticillium lecanii hybrid strains in different sedentary stages of Heterodera glycines. Three different sedentary stages (pale yellow female, yellow brown cyst, and dark brown cyst) of H. glycines were treated with V. lecanii and incubated for 3 weeks on water agar. After 3 weeks of incubation, eggs were investigated for the following parameters: (i) the infection frequencies of eggs, (ii) the number of eggs laid, and (iii) the number of mature and healthy eggs. Subsequently, the fecundity of H. glycines treated with V. lecanii was investigated in greater detail. Consequently, some strains had a greater ability to infect eggs and this significantly reduced the...

Bacillus species can form endospores and have broad-spectrum activity of their antibiotics. For that reason, they offer several advantages over other bacteria for protection against root pathogens. This work was intended to determine the ability of Bacillus spp. to inhibit Verticillium dahliae. First, antagonistic activities of Bacillus spp. were studied in greenhouse trials. These results suggest that the bacterium can control soil-borne diseases. Secondly, to investigate the situation in a culture environment, Bacillus spp. were examined for their activity to control Verticillium black spot of Japanese radish and plant-growth promotion rhizobacteria (PGPR) effects in a field. After 2 months, these bacteria reduced Verticillium black spot of Japanese...

The role of semiochemicals in the avoidance of the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, by the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi OAK
Nakashima, Yoshitaka; Birkett, Michael A.; Pye, Barry J.; Pickett, John A.; Powell, Wilf; 仲島, 義貴.
The role of semiochemicals in mediating intraguild interactions between the seven-spot ladybird, Coccinella septempunctata, and the aphid parasitoid, Aphidius ervi, was investigated. Female parasitoids avoided leaves visited by C. septempunctata adults and larvae during the previous 24 hr. Ethanol extracts of C. septempunctata adults and larvae also induced avoidance responses by A. ervi. Two of the hydrocarbons identified by gas chromatography ( GC) and coupled GC-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), n-tricosane (C23H48), and n-pentacosane (C25H52), when tested individually at levels found in the adult extract, induced avoidance by A. ervi. Further investigation of the larvae extract, and footprint chemicals deposited by adults in glass Petri dishes, confirmed the...
