Collection, Characterization and Use of Genetic Bariation in Chilean Bean Germplasm (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Agricultura Técnica
Bascur B.,Gabriel; Tay U.,Juan.
Recently performed studies on the type of seed protein present from several origins and their morphological traits have shown that the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is native to America, being a species without a specific center of origin and with two areas of domestication: Central America and South America. In this last center, three strains were determined, one of them is called "the Chilean strain", which as noted is a sub-center of genetic diversity for this species. With the purpose of collecting and preserving the genetic diversity present in the Chilean ecotypes, a germplasm collection was made, from Arica to Chiloe, visiting 207 locations in 28 expeditions and collecting 1239 accessions. This material was seeded in two Regional Center of...

Characterization of Capsicum germplasm collected in Northwestern Argentina based on morphological and quality traits Agriscientia (Córdoba)
Occhiuto,P.N; Peralta,I.E; Asprelli,P.D; Galmarini,C.R.
Paprika production is concentrated in Northwestern Argentina, where around 1500 ha are annually grown. Farmers mainly from Andean valleys, maintain their local landraces or “criollas” under different environmental conditions, using their farming traditions and selection criteria. These traditional varieties represent valuable genetic resources for conservation and selection of agronomical and quality traits. Between 2005 and 2007 eight collecting trips were made to Northwestern Argentina in order to recover local germplasm. As a result, five hundred new vegetable seed samples have been incorporated into the Germplasm Bank. Among these accessions 32 belong to Capsicum, the majority for paprika production, that were evaluated in field...

Genetic Characterization of Old Grapevines collected in Oases of the Atacama Desert Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Poblete,Ingrid; Pinto,Manuel; de Andrés,María Teresa; Hinrichsen,Patricio.
Old grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) accessions are a source of genes that could be rescued for use per se or in modern breeding programs. The first step in this rescuing is collecting and characterizing the germplasm from a particular region. This study presents the genetic characterization of 21 grapevine accessions collected from the Atacama Desert in the far North of Chile. Characterization was based on 12 microsatellites (Simple Sequence Repeats, or SSRs) supplemented with Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphic (AFLP) markers. Most of the collected accessions produced red berries and shared the genetic characteristics of the cv. País, an old genotype found throughout America. However, among those red-berried accessions, one showed a severe abortive...
