DETERMINANTS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY AND VARIETAL-GAP OF RICE PRODUCTION IN NIGERIA: A META-FRONTIER MODEL APPROACH AgEcon
Ayinde, Opeyemi Eyitayo; Adewumi, Matthew Olaniyi; Ojehomon, Vivian E.T..
This study uses the concept of meta-frontier function to examine the technical efficiency and varietal-gap of rice production in Nigeria. A random sample of 675 farmers was selected from three out six geographical zones in Nigeria. The farmers in this study were classified into three groups according to the variety of rice they planted. The three main varieties of rice planted are local (Ofada), improved (Mai-Nasara) and New Rice for African (NERICA). The technical efficiency indices were computed using the meta-frontier approach because production varieties and technologies were expected to differ between the three varieties. This method allows the measure of the varietal-differences which is the Technology Gap Ratio (TGR). Estimates of the frontier were...

The relationship between spatial price transmission and geographical distance: the case of Brazil AgEcon
Hernandez-Villafuerte, Karla Vanessa.
The objectives of this research are to investigate the influence of geographical distance on the cointegration relationship in order to increase knowledge on the issue, and to indentify its role in Brazilian agricultural markets. With this intention, the cointegration framework is applied allowing for the presence of multiple structural breaks in the long run equation. The inclusion of breaks is in response to the multiple changes of the agricultural system during the period of investigation. The spatial integration is calculated between each market pair. The cointegration coefficient and geographical distance relationship is calculated by means of an OLS regression, taking into account the quality of roads and the proximity to a border or port. The effect...

Rice Trade Policies and Their Implications for Food Security AgEcon
Durand-Morat, Alvaro; Wailes, Eric J..
There is a strong linkage between the behavior of the rice market and the state of food security in many regions around the world, particularly in Asia, as made evident in the 2007-08 commodity crisis. Rice is a staple for the majority of the population in Asia, where roughly 60% of the close to one billion undernourished people live (FAO, 2010). As Timmer (2010) states, “it is impossible to improve food security in the short run or long run without providing adequate supplies of rice that are accessible to the poor” (p. 2). The rice crisis of 2007-08 showed the crucial role of export and import policies on the behavior of the rice market and its consequences for price stability and food security. Market fundamentals could only explain a minimal part of...

Impact of Zero Tillage in India's Rice-Wheat Systems AgEcon
Laxmi, Vijay; Erenstein, Olaf; Gupta, Raj K..
To date, the most widely adopted resource conserving technology (RCT) in the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP)has been zero-tillage (ZT) for wheat after rice, particularly in India. This report reviews and synthesizes the experience with zero tillage in the Indian IGP. Zero tillage of wheat after rice generates significant benefits at the farm level, both in terms of significant yield gains (6–10%, particularly due to timelier planting of wheat) and cost savings (5–10%, particularly tillage savings). These benefits explain the widespread interest of farmers and the rapidity of the diffusion across the Indian IGP, further aided by the wide applicability of this mechanical innovation. The study subsequently reports on the findings of village-level focus-group...

The Impacts of Farm Size and Economic Risk on No-Till Rice Whole-Farm Profitability AgEcon
Watkins, K. Bradley; Hignight, Jeffrey A.; Anders, Merle M..
This study evaluated the impacts of farm size and stochastic return variability on no-till (NT) rice profitability at the whole-farm level. Mixed integer programming was used to determine optimal machinery complements, fuel consumption, and machinery labor requirements for conventional till (CT) and NT rice-soybean farms of 1200, 2400, and 3600 acres in size. Crop yields, market prices, and prices for key production inputs were simulated to construct stochastic whole-farm net returns for each farm size under CT and NT management, and both first and second degree stochastic dominance analysis were used to rank cumulative distribution functions of whole-farm returns according to specified risk preferences. The results indicate NT farms exhibit second degree...

Bailout with white revolution or sink deeper?: groundwater depletion and impacts in the Moga District of Punjab, India. AgEcon
Amarasinghe, Upali A.; Smakhtin, Vladimir U.; Sharma, Bharat R.; Eriyagama, Nishadi.
Moga District in Punjab, India, is a microcosm of the twin story of irrigation-induced growth and stress. The groundwater consumptive water use in agriculture exceeds the recharge by a substantial margin. Rice production contributes to a major part of this difference. The groundwater depletion is so critical that diversifying agriculture is the only way forward for sustainable agricultural growth. Reducing the rice area and intensifying milk production will be a win-win situation for both the farmers and the area reeling with a groundwater crisis.

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SPATIAL PRICE TRANSMISSION AND GEOGRAPHICAL DISTANCE IN BRAZIL AgEcon
Hernandez-Villafuerte, Karla Vanessa.
The price transmission between markets is often interpreted as providing insights into the market’s infrastructure efficiency and transaction costs. Thus, finding a possible explanation for the degree of integration has become an issue of special interest. Recent researchers have pointed out the distance between markets as one of the possible factors. However, the distance is closely related with other elements, such as road quality and the proximity to an export point, which affect transport costs, opportunity costs and thus the integration. Therefore, what the most important factor is when determining the relationship among markets remains unclear. The cointegration framework, OLS and principal component regressions are applied in order to investigate...

Factors Affecting Adoption of Monocropping of Rice in Manipur: A Logistic Approach AgEcon
Sarungbam, Diana; Prasad, Y.E..
The study conducted in the state of Manipur, has identified the factors affecting monocropping of rice as the cropping intensity of the state is only 107 per cent. Multistage random sampling has been followed to select the districts, blocks, villages and finally the farmers and logit model has been used for the analysis. The study has observed that availing of institutional credit and educational level are among the important factors which decrease monocropping. The study has highlighted the need for focus on crop diversification and increasing cropping intensity. Strengthening of co-operative societies, increasing availability and accessibility to credit facilities, increasing awareness about new technologies, etc. will help in increasing the cropping...

Enhancing Farm Profitability through Portfolio Analysis: The Case of Spatial Rice Variety Selection. AgEcon
Nalley, Lawton Lanier; Barkley, Andrew P.; Brad, Watkins; Hignight, Jeffrey A..
The objectives of this paper is to use the large depth of existing literature on portfolio theory and apply it to rice varietal selection for 6 counties in the Arkansas Delta. Results based on 1999-2006 data suggests that combining available varieties using portfolio theory could have increased profits from 3 to 26% (dependent on location) in the Arkansas Delta. The major implication of this research is that data and statistical tools are available to improve the choice of rice varieties to plant each year in specific locations within Arkansas. Specifically, there are large potential gains from combining varieties that are characterized by inverse yield responses to growing conditions such as drought, pest infestation, or the presence of a specific disease.

Analysis of Participation in Multifunctional Agriculture: U.S. Rice Farms AgEcon
Tur Cardona, Juan; Wailes, Eric J.; Dixon, Bruce L.; Danforth, Diana M..
Multifunctional agriculture is particularly fundamental to some working lands conservation policies and programs, such as the Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP), Conservation Security Program (CSP) and Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program (WHIP). Farmers can also be engaged in providing recreational and agri-tourism services such as hunting, fishing, bird-watching, farm tours, petting zoos and hospitality services. Using the Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS) we analyze factors associated with participation in conservation, recreation and agri-tourism activities as a function of farm structure, farm financial measures, production practices, and socio-demographic characteristics of the farm operator. To estimate the functional...

Rice Miller Cluster in Ghana and Its Effects on Efficiency and Quality Improvement AgEcon
Sakurai, Takeshi; Furuya, Jun; Futakuchi, Koichi.
This paper investigates the roles of industrial cluster on the efficiency of rice milling and the improvement of milled rice quality. The data were obtained in Kumasi area, central Ghana because the enhancement of domestic rice production is a urgent policy issue in this country, but little attention has been paid to the roles of clusters in post-harvest processing and marketing. Among 63 rice millers interviewed in the Kumasi area, 24 millers form a few clusters in the city of Kumasi, while others are scattered over 25 satellite towns around Kumasi, which enables us to examine the effect of the cluster. Regression analyses reveal that rice millers in the Kumasi clusters tend to adopt more advanced technology, and that the innovation increases milling...

Gendered Impact of Irrigated Rice Schemes’ Governance on Farmers’ Income, Productivity and Technical Efficiency in Benin AgEcon
Kinkingninhoun-Medagbe, Florent M.; Diagne, Aliou; Agboh-Noameshie, Afiavi R.; Adegbola, Patrice Ygue.
Collective actions groups have many advantages and are sometimes essential, yet they can reinforce or perpetuate inter-and intra-gender inequalities when their functioning is left entirely subject to internal community dynamics and they are not well managed. This is well illustrated by the case of Koussin-Lélé rice scheme in the central Benin. This paper apply inequality indices and frontier production function to data from a sample of male and women rice farmers to analyze the gender inequalities in access to land and the governance of the groups, and their gender-differentiated impacts on farmers' productivity, technical efficiency and income. The results show that women are particularly discriminated against with regards to access to land, with...

Foodgrain Supply, Distribution, and Consumption Policies within a Duel Pricing Mechanism: a Case Study of Bangladesh AgEcon
Ahmed, Raisuddin.
Conflict between the short run welfare of poor consumers and agricultural production incentives creates some of the most difficult policy issues facing developing countries. Resulting policy option constraints are particularly severe in very low income countries. The conflict may on the one hand impede the growth in al production essential to improve long term welfare of low income consumers, and on the other hand restrain policies to increase consumption, which in the long run is essential to the success of the measures taken to increase production. The widely observed phenomenon of urban bias in food price policy is itself a product of the nature of low income societies and of this complex conflict. This research by Raisuddin Ahmed delineates and...

NONCOMPETITIVE PRICING AND EXCHANGE RATE PASS-THROUGH IN SELECTED U.S. AND THAI RICE MARKETS AgEcon
Yumkella, Kandeh K.; Unnevehr, Laurian J.; Garcia, Philip.
A "pricing to market" international trade model is applied to U.S. and Thai rice exports to high and middle income countries that are continuous rice importers. These markets are characterized by strong quality preferences and highly inelastic demand, and thus exporters may exercise market power. Evidence of noncompetitive pricing either through price discrimination across destinations or through imperfect exchange rate pass-through is found in this small but growing segment of the international rice trade.

Econometric analysis on economies of scale: An application to rice and shrimp production in Thailand AgEcon
Mekhora, Thamrong.
Shrimp production in Thailand has historically been undertaken in the saline and brackish waters of coastal mangroves. In recent years rising demand and prices for shrimp and falling productivity of mangrove areas have motivated an expansion of shrimp production into the fresh-water margins of river estuaries that were previously used for rice cultivation. Generalised additive models, which offer a comprehensive approach to regression analysis, are mainly used for empirical analysis, and model development and specification for rice and shrimp production in this study. This paper presents a brief introduction to generalised additive models, discusses how they are applied to develop cost functions to satisfy the restriction of production theory, and...

A COMPETITIVENESS STUDY OF FOUR RICE PRODUCTION SYSTEMS IN TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AgEcon
Seecharan, Denny; Jacque, Andrew Eliel.
Rice imports into Trinidad and Tobago in 2005 represented approximately 95% of domestic demand. Local production has been declining since reaching a peak of 21,000 tonnes in 1992. Present production is 3,500 tonnes. Rice is produced under a variety of production systems and on farms of varying sizes, productivity and quality of output. This paper examines the competitiveness of four production systems used in Trinidad and Tobago, viz.: the transplanting system (ST), the broadcast seeded system (SB)(both being small farms and highly labour intensive), the partially mechanized system of medium sized farms (MM) and a fully mechanized large farm utilizing aerial technology in the production system (CRP).
