Applying regression quantiles to farm efficiency estimation AgEcon
Kaditi, Eleni A.; Nitsi, Elisavet I..
This article is concerned with the methodological question of frontier production functions estimation for agriculture, and the appropriateness of regression quantiles, as a useful semi-parametric approach. Better insights are reached using the proposed methodology that provides robust farm efficiency scores estimates. Using the 2007 Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) data for Greece, analysis shows that the distribution of efficiency scores is closer to normality when employing regression quantiles, while underestimation of efficiency obtained by other parametric or deterministic methods based on the conditional mean can be avoided. The results further suggest that government support aimed at enhancing farms viability should be directed towards payments...

Modeling environmental risk and land management trade-offs in the Great Barrier Reef catchment AgEcon
Mallawaarachchi, Thilak; Mazur, Kasia; Lawson, Kenton.
We develop a catchment scale modeling framework to identify cost-effective strategies for joint onsite abatement and offsite mitigation of land-based pollution from agricultural activities that pose a risk to water quality in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR). An illustrative example of the Barron catchment in north Queensland is used to demonstrate an approach to specify social planner’'s problem for non-point source pollution management as a cost minimisation model to meet a specified reduction in land-based pollution emissions at the receiving waters of GBR. We focus on the tradeoffs between onsite pollution control and offsite pollution mitigation under a collective contract for nutrient reduction at a sub-catchment level and discuss implementation options.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE AGRICULTURAL CROPS TRADE SECTOR OF SUDAN UNDER THE INCREASING WORLD FOOD PRICES AgEcon
Elgali, Mohamed B.; Mustafa, Rajaa H.; Bauer, Siegfried.
The agricultural trade of the Sudan is expected to develop under the recent dramatic increase of world food prices. Sudan as one of the developing countries and as price taker on the world agricultural market has been affected greatly by the world price increase. This paper aims at studying the impact of the increasing world food prices on developments of the agricultural crops trade sector of Sudan. In this paper a multimarket model is used as the main tool to estimate the increase of the world food prices on the crop trade sector. Multi-market analysis is a tool for simulating the effects of agricultural price policies on outcomes considered of interest to policy makers. The model under consideration takes the normal specification of a standard partial...

COST SHARING, TRANSACTION COSTS, AND CONSERVATION AgEcon
Lichtenberg, Erik; Smith-Ramirez, Ricardo.
Conservation subsidies may be awarded for otherwise profitable projects, in which case they do not improve environmental quality. We show that transaction costs involved in such subsidy programs may induce farmers to reduce the size and scope of conservation projects. An empirical study shows that cost sharing in Maryland has resulted in simpler projects that provide no greater environmental protection. Water quality does not appear to be a goal of cost sharing; farm productivity and political considerations do.

A DISCRETE SPACE URBAN MODEL WITH ENVIRONMENTAL AMENITIES AgEcon
Tajibaeva, Liaila; Haight, Robert G.; Polasky, Stephen.
This paper analyzes the effects of providing environmental amenities associated with open space in a discrete space urban model. The discrete space model assumes distinct neighborhoods in which developable land is homogeneous within a neighborhood but heterogeneous across neighborhoods. We solve for equilibrium allocation of development, prices and welfare given a pattern of open space provision. We also analyze the optimal provision of open space across neighborhoods. In equilibrium, housing density and price in a neighborhood is increasing in the amount of open space provided in that neighborhood. Whether housing density and prices in other neighborhoods increases or decreases depends on whether the push from reduced availability of developable land in...

Combining Supply and Demand Estimates for Ecosystem Services from Cropland AgEcon
Ma, Shan; Swinton, Scott M.; Lupi, Frank.
Payment-for-Ecosystem-Services (PES) programs are gaining appeal as flexible approaches to inducing the voluntary provision of ecosystem services (ES). Farmers, who manage agricultural ecosystems, provide important nonmarket ecosystem services to the public by their choice of production inputs and management practices. Although there exist various PES programs in the United States and Europe, we are aware of none that was designed based on a comprehensive understanding of the underlying supply and demand of ecosystem services. Taking advantage of unique, coupled datasets of stated preferences, this paper combines a supply-side cost function of farmers’ willingness to adopt practices that provide increased ES with a demand-side social benefit function of...

Soil Erosion Control and Damage Costs in Nigerian Small Farms: Implications for Farm Growth and Sustainability AgEcon
Okoye, Chukwuemeka U..
In Nigeria 90% of the agricultural primary produce is in the hands of small holders cultivating between 0.8-4 hectares. Farm size expansion is limited by population pressure, land fragmentation, poor market opportunities and lack of finance. This article presents estimates of soil erosion control(SEC) and soil erosion damage costs (SEDC) in small farmers' fields in Nigeria and examines the contents and direction of the country’s agriculture and environment policies vis-à-vis the SEC among small farmers. It was found that 24% of the farmers’ spending on tillage/cultural practices was directed at the institution of SEC measures, and that SEC-related defensive expenditures was 3.7 times more than the estimated SEDCs. The capacity of small farmers to respond...

Estimating the Market Effect of a Food Scare: The Case of Genetically Modified StarLink Corn AgEcon
Carter, Colin A.; Smith, Aaron D..
Genetic modification of crops has revolutionized food production, but it remains controversial due to food safety and environmental concerns. A recent food safety scare provides a natural experiment on the corn market's willingness to accept unapproved genetically modified organisms. In 2000, a genetically modified corn variety called StarLink was discovered in the food-corn supply, even though it was not approved for human consumption. To estimate the price impact of this event, we develop the relative price of a substitute method, which applies not only to the StarLink event but also to rare events in other markets. We apply this method to measure the price impact of the StarLink contamination on the U.S. corn market. We find that the contamination led...

What Drives Strategic Behavior? A Framework to Explain and Predict SMEs' Transition to Sustainable Production Systems AgEcon
Kalogeras, Nikos; Pennings, Joost M.E.; Garcia, Philip.
The strategic choices of Small and Medium Enterprises in the agribusiness sector are fraught with large cost and revenue uncertainties. The transition to a new production system implies that SMEs must re-allocate resources and develop new strategies to achieve market goals. We highlight the agricultural, marketing and management literature on decision-making under risk for strategic decisions. Subsequently we discuss the various elicitation techniques to measure decision-makers'’ utility functions. That review indicates that one is able to measure the global utility function in a reliable and valid way. Particularly the measures based on experiments and rooted in expected utility framework seem to perform well. Furthermore, we develop various research...

A VALUATION OF PUBLIC DEMAND FOR THE PARTICIPATION OF NONGOVERNMENTAL AGENCIES IN MONITORING AND ENFORCING FOOD SAFETY REGULATIONS AgEcon
He, Senhui; Fletcher, Stanley M.; Rimal, Arbindra.
Lack of consumer trust in governmental food safety regulators hinders the promotion of consumer confidence in the safety of their food supply. One possible way to boost consumer trust is to allow nongovernmental agencies to participate in monitoring and enforcing food safety regulations. This study identifies factors affecting consumer desire for the participation of nongovernmental agencies. The information obtained from this study can be used in further valuation of the feasibility of the participation of nongovernmental agencies.

ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS OF THE AUSTRALIA-U.S. FREE TRADE AGREEMENT FOR U.S. DAIRY MARKETS AND DOMESTIC DAIRY FARM PROGRAMS AgEcon
Alston, Julian M.; Sumner, Daniel A.; Balagtas, Joseph Valdes; Brunke, Henrich.
We develop a simulation model to analyze the effects on U.S. milk markets of an Australia-U.S. free trade agreement. An important contribution to the literature is the derivation of explicit supply and demand relationships for milk components, which allows an analysis of long-term production, consumption, and trade patterns that is not tied to specific products. Simulations indicate that increased imports from Australia, resulting from bilateral trade liberalization, would result in modest reductions in U.S. milk prices and production.

Water Trading within NSW Irrigation Industry: An Empirical Evaluation of Scale, Reasons and Attitudes AgEcon
Singh, Inderpal; Bari, Maksudul; Flavel, Noel J..
The paper discusses the level of water trading within the NSW Irrigation Industry along with water prices, reasons, attitudes and knowledge of both permanent and temporary water trading. It is based on the results of a survey of 1,115 irrigators representing over 10% of the total irrigators' population within NSW Water Sharing Plans that commenced during 2004 and various secondary data sources covering water trading. Temporary water trading in Murray and Lower Murray Darling and Lachlan catchments has expanded since the commencement of the Water Sharing Plans in NSW. Nearly 7% and 40% of the irrigators surveyed participated in the permanent and temporary water markets respectively. Fifty six percent of the irrigators believed that temporary trading was...
