CASA FAMILIAR RURAL: UMA ESCOLA DIFERENTE ExtensaoRural
Visbiski, Vivieny Nogueira; Weirich Neto, Pedro Henrique.

ESTUDO DA UTILIZAÇÃO DOS RECURSOS DO PRONAF ExtensaoRural

INTERANNUAL VARIABILITY OF THE KUROSHIO CURRENT INTRUSION IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA Gayana
Caruso,Michael J; Beardsley,Robert C; Gawarkiewicz,Glen G.
The interannual variability of the Kuroshio Current intrusion into the South China Sea is investigated using a combination of satellite remote sensing data and in situ measurements. This research was conducted as part of the Asian Seas International Acoustic EXperiment (ASIAEX). The circulation of the South China Sea has been studied for years and is predominantly wind-forced by the northeast winter and southwest summer monsoons. There remains some uncertainty to the interannual nature of the circulation and the effect of Kuroshio intrusions on mesoscale features in the northeast South China Sea. Satellite observations of Sea Surface Temperature (SST) from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Sea Surface Height Anomalies (SSHA) from...

ATMOSPHERIC PARAMETERS OVER THE MARGINAL ICE ZONE RETREIVAL FROM ANSR/AMSR-E DATA Gayana
Mitnik,Maia L.; Mitnik,Leonid M..
A direct radiative transfer model, 478 radiosondes complimented by the cloud liquid water content profiles and the underlying surface temperatures and emissivities were used to simulate the brightness temperatures T Bs over the Marginal Ice Zone at ADEOS-II AMSR and Aqua AMSR-E frequencies. The precipitable water V varied from 0.63 to 18.5kg/m², the total cloud liquid water content Q<=0.25kg/m² and SST£1°C. The mean experimental values of emissivity and its fluctuations for several types of the first-year ice at ice temperature of 263 to 271K were used in a model. The sea surface emissivity was computed taking into account wind action. 10 values of ice concentration C uniformly distributed from 0.0 to 1.0 were selected for each radiosonde. The...

USE OF SATELLITE WAVE DATA IN THE WORLDWAVES PROJECT Gayana
Barstow,Steve; Mørk,Gunnar; Lønseth,Lasse; Schjølberg,Peter.
The demand for reliable information on wave conditions, in particular at coastal sites, is increasing. WorldWaves is a newly completed software package, developed by Fugro OCEANOR with funding from industry and within the framework of various European Commission sponsored contracts, notably EnviWave. The system simplifies the modelling of wave conditions in coastal waters, resulting in more timely, lower cost but reliable data. Thus, WorldWaves should be particularly beneficial in developing countries. In WorldWaves, the following are integrated under a single Matlab toolbox: · High quality long-term wave data offshore all global coasts. · Global bathymetric and coastline data. · Two shallow water wave models: SWAN, a third generation wave model and a...

INFLUENCE IF ATMOSPHERIC MOISTURE TRANSPORT ON ICE COVERAGE IN POLAR REGIONS Gayana
Tang,Wenqing; Liu,W. Timothy.
Change in Earth's polar ice sheets is potentially a major source of sea level variability, dramatically affecting global water cycle. One important component in the polar region water balance is the atmospheric moisture transported from lower latitude, which is traditionally estimated from rawinsonde measurements. A method has been developed to estimate moisture transport integrated over the depth of the atmosphere (IMT) by combining the observations by spacebased scatterometers and microwave radiometers. The gridded IMT fields over global oceans have been produced for the period from August 1999 to December 2003, using data from QuikSCAT and the Special Sensor Microwave / Imager (SSM/I). The temporal and geographical variation of IMT into Greenland and...

FISHERY AND OCEANOGRAPHIC MONITORING SYSTEM (FOMS): A NEW TECHNOLOGICAL TOOL BASED ON REMOTE SENSING, WITH APPLICATION IN ECOSYSTEM MANAGEMENT OF COASTAL FISHERIES IN PATAGONIA Gayana
González,Raúl; Gaspar,Claudio; Curtolo,Luis; Sangiuliano,Italo; Osovnikar,Paul; Borsetta,Néstor.
The Fishery and Oceanographic Monitoring System (FOMS) or Sistema de Monitoreo Pesquero y Oceanográfico (SiMPO) in Spanish, was recently established in San Matías Gulf (Argentina) with the objective of monitoring fishing fleet operations. FOMS was also conceived as a fundamental tool for supporting research activities in the context of the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries. A detailed description of the system is offered. An on line satellite transceiver (Inmarsat D+) supplies data about position, bearing and speed of the vessels, and alarms are automatically triggered whenever vessels are detected fishing in forbidden areas. The off line module integrating one on board CPU with other components: an electronic logbook allowing to the skipper load data on...

WEAKENING OF HORIZONTAL SEA SURFACE TEMPERATURE GRADIENTS AT LOW WIND SPEEDS WITH STRONG INSOLATION Gayana
Katsaros,Kristina B.
During days with strong insolation and low wind speed, there may be uneven net heating of the water layer near the surface of the ocean caused by variations in horizontal temperature at the sea surface. The heat loss from the water caused by evaporation, sensible, or longwave radiation is proportional to the sea surface temperature and is, therefore, greater from warm water compared to that from the relatively colder water. As a result, under low wind speed conditions and clear skies, the horizontal SST discontinuities, occurring at fronts, eddies, or in storm wakes, may diminish or even vanish. This phenomenon is illustrated here with some field and modeling results. The time dependence is important for the impact on remote sensing of SST, and it is found...

DYNAMICS OF GENERATION OF EXTREME PRECIPITATION IN THE NORTHERN OF PERU Gayana
Carrillo,Mauricio; Bazo,Juan.
This article studies the influential factors in the occurrence of extreme rainfall in the northern Peru. The favorable conditions are analyzed under the following hypothesis: warming up of the sea surface temperature (SST), the southward movement of the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), and the advection of humidity transferred from the east part of the Andes. Extreme rainfall has been periodically observed, it occurs during El Niño and non El Niño events. The main goal is to quantify the critical threshold for this occurrence. These limits will be associated to the teleconnections of the SST, ITCZ and winds. The generation of a warm "nucleus" of SST facilitates the creation of convergence "nucleus" in low levels due to positive temperature...

DETECTION OF MESOSCALE OCEANIC FEATURES USING RADARSAT-1, AVHRR AND SEAWIFS IMAGES AND THE POSSIBLE LINK WITH JACK MACKEREL (TRACHURUS MURPHYI) DISTRIBUTION IN CENTRAL CHILE Gayana
Barbieri,M.A; Silva,C; Larouche,P; Nieto,K; Yáñez,E.
In order to verify the ability of RADARSAT-1 images to detect mesoscale oceanic features and the possible link of these oceanographic patterns with jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) distribution in the waters off central Chile, a project was developed as part of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing Globesar-2 program. The combined use of simultaneously acquired RADARSAT-1, AVHRR sea surface temperature (SST), SeaWiFS Chlorophyll a concentration (Chl), TOPEX/ERS altimeter and ERS-2 scatterometer wind data greatly enhanced SAR imaging capabilities for the detection of oceanic features. Results show that detection of coastal wind-driven upwellings, eddies, frontal boundaries and phytoplankton blooms is possible using SAR imagery, given the proper...

ATMOSPHERIC CORRECTION OF THE LANDSAT SATELLITE IMAGERY FOR TURBID WATERS Gayana
Hwan Ahn,Yu; Shanmugam,P; Hyung Ryu,Joo.
This paper describes methods for the correction of the atmospheric effects in the Landsat VIS/NIR imagery in relation to the retrieval of meaningful information about the ocean color, especially from Case-2 waters around Korean peninsula. Three atmospheric correction (AC) methods implemented and examined, using the TOA radiance or reflectance data, are 6S radiative transfer model, spectral shape matching (SSMM) and path-extraction methods. The results show that overall shape and magnitude of radiance or reflectance spectra of the atmospherically corrected Landsat VIS/NIR imagery by SSMM appears to have very good agreement with the in-situ spectra collected for clear and turbid waters, while path-extraction over turbid waters though often reproduces in-situ...

DATA FUSION OF SPOT PAN IMAGES AND LANDSAT TM FOR MAPPING RIO TAVARES'MANGROVE IN SANTA CATARINA ISLAND-BRAZIL Gayana
Pellerin,Joel; Pinto Camargo,Lucia; Neves Panitz,Clarice Maria.
With the availability of multisensor, multitemporal, multiresolution and multifrequency image data from operational Earth observation satellites the fusion of digital image data has become a valuable tool in remote sensing image evaluation. In this paper a new multispectral image wavelength representation is introduced of the integrated Landsat Thematic Mapper TM and Spot HRV Pan data to establish river Tavares' Mangrove vegetation classification in Santa Catarina Island - Brazil. The combining of data from these different sensors is necessary for preserving spatial integrity of the higher-resolution data (PAN) set spectral information and of the lower resolution components in (TM). The fusion of these different data contributed to the understanding of the...

USING UPDATED PARABOLIC EQUATIONS CODES TO EXAMINE ACOUSTIC TRANSMISSION LOSSES MEASUREMENTS OVER THE ARGENTINEAN CONTINENTAL SLOPE Gayana
de Milou,Marta. E.; Salvadores,Silvia R.; Blanc,Silvia.
Up and down slope acoustic propagation measurements were conducted in 1989 [Milou et al., 1990] over the Argentinean continental slope leading to experimental values of Transmission Losses (TL) for the 100 - 400 Hz frequency band. This enabled comparisons between the obtained data and the parabolic equation (PE) model predictions. With the aim of examining the effects of using updated PE codes [Collins, 1993] including their corresponding physical and computational improvements, on the already obtained results, predicted TL values are recomputed. An analysis of these new comparisons are presented here

A PBL MODEL WITH ORGANIZED LARGE EDDIES FOR MESOSCALE-SYNOPTIC-GLOBAL WINDS Gayana
Brown,Robert A.
The University of Washington PBL model is a nonlinear similarity model (with organized large eddies in an equilibrium mean flow) suitable for km-scale to General Circulation Model or Climate numerical models. The theory and verification for this solution are now well established. Researchers who work with winds in the boundary layer with scales from point to 20-km regimes must be aware of this horizontal inhomogenuity in the PBL flow to avoid significant errors. Since the OLE contribute advectively to the mean flow there can be 10-20% (or more) increase in surface winds and fluxes over K-theory models. The model is described and several applications have been made

PICO-PHYTOPLANKTON DISTRIBUTION IN WESTERN PACIFIC OCEAN ESTIMATED FROM OCEAN COLOR AND SST Gayana
Senga,Yasuhiro; Horiuchi,Tomohiro.
To investigate the spatial distribution of pico-phytoplankton in surface water, photosynthetic pigments were analyzed by a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) for three cruises in the western Pacific Ocean carried out on 2000, 2001 and 2002. Analyzed chlorophyll-a showed peaks at the equatorial region and near Japan. In contrast, zeaxanthin, a specific pigment of pico-phytoplankton such as Synechococcus and Prochlorococcus showed a broad peak around equatorial region. From these results, we found inverse relationship between the ratio of zeaxanthin to chlorophyll-a concentration (ZCR) and chlorophyll-a concentration, and also positive relationship between ZCR and sea surface temperature (SST). And we derived a multiple regression equation to...

SYNOPTIC MAPPING OF SHALLOW, MARINE, COASTAL COMMUNITIES USING AIRBORNE HYPERSPECTRAL SENSORS: TECHNICAL ASPECTS, OPERATIONAL APPROACHES, AND PROVEN APPLICATIONS Gayana
Gagnon,Patrick; Ripley,Herbert T; Jones,William.
The integrity of littoral ecosystems is seriously threatened by the sustained and evergrowing exploitation of coastal resources by humankind, the introduction of non indigenous species, and the ongoing climate change. The concurrent exploitation and preservation of coastal ecosystems is a major challenge, which can only be effectively addressed using synoptic tools and approaches for detailed mapping and monitoring of subtidal communities. One of the most promising technologies to this end is the use of airborne hyperspectral remote sensing technologies that feature both high spectral and spatial resolutions. This paper provides an overview of the technical aspects and operational approaches to map the extent of shallow, marine, coastal habitats over large...

RELATING SPATIAL DISTRIBUTION OF CHILEAN JACK MACKEREL EGGS AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS IN THE OCEANIC WATERS OFF CHILE Gayana
Núñez E.,Sergio; Letelier P.,Jaime; Donoso Q.,David; Sepúlveda O.,Aquiles; Arcos R.,Dagoberto.
Chilean jack mackerel (Trachurus murphyi) is a highly migratory pelagic species that inhabits the Southern Pacific Ocean, constituting the most important fishery for Chile. This species exhibits an onshore migration during the summer related to coastal food availability, and an offshore migration towards reproductive oceanic areas (beyond Chilean EEZ) in early spring. During the spawning peaks (November) of 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001, jack mackerel eggs were collected from four systematic surveys using 8-10 fishing vessels, deployed in the spawning area (76-92 W) off central Chile. Spatial distribution of eggs was modeled by geostatistical techniques. Environmental information including SST, wind, sea level anomalies and chlorophyll-a, as well as SST...

FRONTS AND FRONTAL WAVES OVER THE SOUTHERN CONE Gayana
Patoux,Jérôme; Brown,Robert A..
Numerous cold fronts associated with mature extratropical storms sweep the coast of Chile every year. The large expanses of the Southern Pacific Ocean offer an ideal setting for up to 4000-km long cold fronts to develop as their parent cyclones travel from Australia to South America. These fronts sometimes break and spawn secondary cyclones that deepen significantly in one or two days. Examples of such frontal waves will be shown and discussed. An attribution technique applied to scatterometer wind measurements is used to diagnose the development of those frontal waves. Necessary conditions for their development are revealed
