SOBRE O PROCESSO DE MEDIAÇÃO SOCIAL NOS PROJETOS DE DESENVOLVIMENTO: UMA REFLEXÃO TEÓRICA AgEcon
Deponti, Cidonea Machado; Almeida, Jalcione.

Croatia's EU accession: socio-economic assessment of farm households and policy recommendations AgEcon
Mollers, Judith; Zier, Patrick; Frohberg, Klaus; Buchenrieder, Gertrud; Bojnec, Stefan.
Croatia is very close to meeting the requirements necessary for becoming a member of the European Union (EU). On February 6, 2008, the European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn said that accession negotiations with Croatia are moving ahead well. As in all new member states (NMS), the agricultural sector and food processing chain are core issues within the negotiation process. Successful negotiation requires intimate knowledge of the issue at hand, including the socio-economic situation and the fears and strategies of the stakeholders, particularly small-scale farmers. This report attempts to close some of these knowledge gaps by reviewing Croatia’s rural development dynamics and farm structures, as well as agricultural and rural policies. Based on an...

A Development Visions Approach of Designing Rural Strategies AgEcon
Rusali, Mirela.
The paper aims to present possible development visions for the rural areas in a candidate country to access the EU. The proposed objective is to provide a decision-making tool useful in strategic planning process, by designing models of integrated rural development, applicable at country or regional levels. The scenarios method was used to conceive alternatives for rural development and design scenario matrices, focusing on the institutional and socio-economic modules of analysis. The paper proposes a trend scenario, based on the potentials and constraints identified in the analysis phase, and 3 goal scenarios, based on distinctly different sets of goals or development visions. The expected outcome consists in development of the potential for economic...

Rural Poverty and Employment Effects of Bt Cotton in India AgEcon
Subramanian, Arjunan; Qaim, Matin.
The impact of genetically modified (GM) crops on the poor in developing countries is still the subject of controversy. While previous studies have examined direct productivity effects of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) cotton and other GM crops, little is known about wider socioeconomic outcomes. We use a microeconomic modelling approach and comprehensive survey data from India to analyze welfare and distribution effects in a typical village economy. Bt cotton adoption increases aggregate employment with interesting gender implications. Likewise, aggregate household incomes rise, including for poor and vulnerable farmers, highlighting that Bt cotton contributes to poverty reduction and rural development.

RURAL DEVELOPMENT, PRIVATIZATION AND PUBLIC CHOICE: SUBSTANCE DEPENDS UPON PROCESS AgEcon
Hite, James C..
Whether or not privatization facilitates rural development depends upon what rural development means. In practice, rural development often is the result of a struggle between rent defenders and rent seekers. A positivist concept of rural development is proposed, and the institutions of public choice are examined to determine how they might influence privatization decisions. The conclusion is that whether or not privatization improves efficiency of adjustment in rural economies depends upon the specifics of political deals required to achieve a particular act of privatization.

Agricultural Clusters in China AgEcon
Kiminami, Lily; Kiminami, Akira.
The purpose of this study is to assess the potential of clustering in the development of agriculture and rural communities in China. We shall examine in detail the food industry, which is the link in the food chain that propels the industrialization of agriculture, and identify instances of industrial agglomeration and business collaboration. Next, we shall analyze the externalities (i.e. spillovers) of clusters, demand conditions in cluster formation, and the effectiveness of business collaborations.

EDUCATION OF AGRICULTURAL PRODUCERS INTENDED TO IMPROVE FARM OPERATIONS AND MANAGEMENT AgEcon
Subic, Jonel; Vasiljevic, Zorica; Ivanovic, Sanjin.
Having in mind that rural areas occupy the greatest part of Serbian territory, where agricultural production represents the basic source of income, development of this sector is of great importance not only for local community, but also for entire Serbian rural area. At the end of previous decade in developed European countries it was promoted a model of rural development which assumes multifunctional nature of European agriculture, as well as its development role in economy and entire society. In the first decade of this millennium Serbia has made decision to develop the same concept. By possession of adequate training for utilization of scientific and research methods in identification of local community advantages and disadvantages, as well as for...

The effects of non-agricultural activities on income distribution in rural Brazil Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Neder,Henrique D..
The growth of non-agricultural activity since the 1980s has reconfigured the economic and social dynamic in Brazil’s rural areas. Our paper intends to describe the impact of this growth on income distribution in rural Brazil. We made use of a method of decomposition of two indicators of income distribution applied to1992 and 1999 Brazilian National Household Sample Survey (PNAD) data: the variation coefficient and the Gini index. It was observed that non-agricultural activities have increased the concentration of rural income and that this phenomenon is more prominent in Region I (states of Brazil’s Northeast and the state of Tocantins) and Region IV (states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul and the Distrito Federal). It was found that the income...

Importance of the sugarcane industry in the formal employment in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul during the period of 2008 to 2014 Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Defante,Lilliane Renata; Vilpoux,Olivier François; Sauer,Leandro.
Abstract: In the early 2000s, sugarcane experienced high growth in Brazil and Mato Grosso do Sul experienced the highest growth, with a 398%% increase. We analysed the impact of the sugarcane industry on formal employment and wages in Mato Grosso do Sul between 2008 and 2014. We used a Normalized Concentration Index (nCI) decomposed into Location Quotient (LQ), modified Hirschman Herfindahl Index (HHm), and Relative Participation (RP). Data were collected in the Annual Report on Social Information (RAIS). The nCI allows a general perception of concentration since LQ and HHm give greater weight to small municipalities with few activities, and the RP underestimates the importance of industry for these same municipalities. Thus, the municipality of Dourados,...

Monitoring and Evaluation of the Agricultural and Rural Renewal Program in Algeria: case of the Ouarsenis area Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Tebani,Mohamed; Mederbal,Khalladi.
Abstract: In Algeria, agriculture continues to suffer from short-term strategies and is unsuitable for the needs of populations and rural areas. This study examines the evaluation of the Agricultural and Rural Program (ARRP) initiated in Algeria for the period (2009-2014). This work was carried in the Ouarsenis area located in the north-west of the country. It is based on regular monitoring on the ground of the rate of achievement of the targets foreseen. We concentrated our efforts on the projects financed by the main intervention funds of this program. The results achieved are far from the targets for the economic component, a situation mainly expressed by the low income of the rural population and the number of jobs created. However, an improvement in...

Heritage and Patrimony of the Peasantry Framework and Rural Development Indicators in Rural Communities in Mexico Rev. Econ. Sociol. Rural
Ariza,Fabio Alberto Pachon; Bokelmann,Wolfgang; Miranda,Cesar Adrian Ramirez.
Abstract: The analytical framework “heritage and patrimony of the peasantry” and its recommended implementation theoretically provide an enhancement over previous methodologies to examine rural development. The current paper measures rural development indicators in six Mexican rural territories, and analyses their interaction in the heritages and patrimonies of the peasantry. The principal indicators that affect the patrimonies in these regions were recognised as Pluriactivity, Social Acknowledgment, Biodiversity and Recycling. Based on these outcomes, the indicators that belong to the Human Patrimony define it as the lowest of all the heritages of the Mexican peasantry. The analysis of the results remarks on the fact that the emphasis of public policies...

Erol,Seçil Yurdakul; Yıldırım,Hasan Tezcan.
ABSTRACT: The interaction between forest resources and forest villagers has made rural development a privileged component of Turkish forest policy. In this context the main aim of the study was to investigate the framing of rural development issues in national forest policy by using content analysis method. The economic aspect is the most prominent dimension regarding rural development in the context of national forest policy, environmental and socio-cultural factors follow it respectively. Also, the main approach depends on supporting the forest villagers and its development is seen as an essential tool to protect the forest resources.

Socio-demographic and economic indicators in gender structure in the middle Taurus mountainous villages of Turkey Ciência Rural
Davran,Müge Kantar; Öztornacı,Burak; Özalp,Burhan.
ABSTRACT: Socio-demographic and economic indicators are very important clues to scientists and institutions to direct development programs for the empowerment of rural women. The goal of this study is to determine the status of rural women living in the Taurus mountainous villages of Turkey according to socio-demographic and economic indicators as related to gender structure. In this research area, there is not enough official data related to socio-demographic and economic indicators about mountainous rural women, like in most developing countries. For this study, the authors collected data from 146 women and 133 men using questionnaires and face-to-face interviews. In this research area, we found that women occupy positions of low power compared to men...

Relations between rural development projects and urban migration: the Köykent Project in Turkey Ciência Rural
Erdönmez,Cihan; Özden,Sezgin.
In Turkey, migration from rural areas to the cities began in the 1950s. Although various rural development approaches were discussed in the 1960s and 1970s, none of them was successfully put into practice. In 2000, Köykent, one of these rural development approaches was started in the borough of Mesudiye. This study examines the effect of the Köykent Project on the migration from rural areas to cities. The results show that the project affected the migration in two ways. First, the tendency of rural residents to migrate to the cities decreased. Second, the tendency of urban residents, who had previously migrated from villages to cities, to return to their home villages increased.

Consumption attributes and preferences on medicinal and aromatic plants: a consumer segmentation analysis Ciência Rural
Güney,Osman Inanç.
ABSTRACT: In recent years, increasing interest in natural and traditional plants, which are an integral part of rural life, has been observed because of health concerns and new social trends. In this regard, medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are becoming more popular among consumers. The purpose of this research is to investigate consumers’ attitudes and behaviors toward MAPs in order to identify possible distinct consumer group and examine its potential linkage to the characteristics of the consumers’ demographic and socio-economic status. To detect the perceived differences among consumers, the principal component and k-means cluster analysis were performed using the data from a face-to-face survey (n=420) conducted in five major cities in the...
