Potato blight Phytophora infestans is a major limiting factor on potato production and is a particular problem for organic growers in Wales. The use of blight resistant varieties is an important strategy in the management of late blight. Hungarian Sárpo varieties appear to have greater late-blight resistance than any currently available to Welsh growers. In 2004, ADAS Pwllpeiran undertook field trials of 19 Sárpo varieties provided by the Sárvári Research Trust, with the following objectives: |

As part of the Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to organic farming, financial and technical support is available to all farmers converting to organic systems. Organic farming is good for the countryside, with benefits to biodiversity, animal welfare, water quality, public health and local economies. The market for organic produce in the UK is growing, and at the moment much of it has to be imported. This leaflet provides an introduction to the advice and information available to help you decide if organic production could be for you, and to support you through the conversion process. However, This edition of 'Thinking of going Organic' was published in April 2006. The Welsh Assembly Government is currently reviewing the Organic Farming Scheme... |

This is the final report of Defra project OF0350. The attached main report starts with an Executive Summary, from which this text is a shortened extract. Objectives. To inform the ACOS R&D sub-committee in its work of identifying research priorities for the UK organic farming and food sector through the identification and analysis of the issues and aspirations that stakeholders feel should be addressed by publicly funded research into organic farming in the UK. Stakeholders consulted in this project included the complete continuum of the organic sector from farmers, producers and land managers, to processors, marketers, retailers as well as consumers and the scientific community. The process of consultation and stakeholder involvement has been... |

This factsheet covers financial performance of lowland organic beef and sheep production. Survey data illustrates that while organic farms can achieve similar incomes to conventional, the finances for both organic and conventional groups are at best marginal, and the models illustrate the reliance of farms on support payments. Organic premium prices are required to maintain relative incomes, especially on lowland farms with dairy and arable holdings. The main factors that will influence performance are the increased role of cattle, with implications for housing and winter feed provision and the emphasis on closed flocks and herds and increase in feeds produced on farm to avoid purchasing expensive conserved forage. |

This factsheet covers financial performance of upland organic beef and sheep production. Survey data illustrates that while organic farms can achieve similar incomes to conventional, the finances for both organic and conventional groups are at best marginal, and the models illustrate the importance of support payments. Organic premium prices are important to maintain relative incomes, but are less so here compared with dairy and arable holdings. The main factors that will influence performance are the increased role of cattle, with implications for housing and winter feed provision, as well as the emphasis on closed flocks and herds and increase on feeds produced on farm to avoid purchasing expensive conserved forage. In addition, upland farmers should... |

Manure is an important source of organic matter and nutrients in organic farming systems, principally nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Careful management is required during storage, handling and land-spreading to (a) ensure the most efficient use of the nutrients in the farming system and (b) to limit emissions of nitrate (NO3), ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O), methane (CH4) and P to the wider environment. With a likely increase in the organically farmed area, information is needed on best practices for manure management in organic systems to minimise the environmental impacts of these systems. The aim was that software would calculate NPK fluxes associated with each aspect of the livestock system, and provide options to explore the... |

The Organic Conversion Information Service (OCIS) has been operational in Wales since 1996. In 2001 the original funding arrangements for OCIS came to an end and this review was conducted to evaluate the service and canvas farmer opinion to inform the next phase of its development. A questionnaire survey of everyone who had contacted OCIS in its first five years revealed generally high satisfaction with the helpline, information pack and on-farm advisory visits provided by the service. Farmers identified a range of extra features that would be useful, such as more information on marketing, environmental issues and conversion planning. |

Slugs are the most common and widespread pest affecting all farmers and growers. There are 29 species of slugs in the UK. The most destructive are from the Deroceras, Arion and Malix groups. Very few crops are unaffected as slugs are polyphagus and feed throughout the year whenever conditions are cool/warm and damp. With FYM & green manures, soil organic matter levels are increased which favours slugs. Snails tend to be less important, but can cause problems in gardens and on cane fruits. This technical note discusses natural enemies of slugs, nature of damage, life history and control measures, and lists sources of further information. |

Mastitis is the most significant disease affecting the health, welfare and economic productivity of dairy cattle and is recognised by Defra as a major economic and welfare concern. Research into the efficacy of homeopathic treatments and of management control of mastitis on organic dairy farms have both been identified as research priorities in recent Defra funded reviews of organic dairy farming. This study examined the use of a specific mode of homeopathic treatment in the prevention of mastitis and quantified the effect that the year-round, prophylactic use of nosodes, supplied to the cattle in the drinking water, had on the number of clinical cases of mastitis on somatic cell counts within herds. Context and background Organic dairy farming is a... |

During the 1990’s significant areas of hill and upland in the UK were converted to organic production. In the short term, this was driven by the downturn in conventional prices for beef and sheep, and the aid to conversion payments available. In more recent years there has been an expansion of organic farming in lowland beef and sheep, and arable systems. This provides a better opportunity to integrate hill and lowland production, and address some of the problems of infrastructure e.g. organic concentrate feed supply and limited finishing capacity for hill livestock. Decoupling of EU support from production, through the single farm payment scheme, will affect the financial performance and longer-term sustainability of both organic and conventional... |

The objective of the project is to draw together information on current levels of funding for organic research throughout all UK public sector, private and charitable sources. A list of 268 potential organic food and farming research funders and contractors throughout the UK was drawn together and questionnaires were mailed to them in the week of 24th February 2003. With regular follow up of all recipients to achieve the best return rate possible a response rate of 41% was achieved. We asked for details on all projects that were ongoing in the period between Jan 2000 and March 2003. The survey identified 168 individual projects. The total cost of this research was £23,578,902 of which nearly £20M was solely from the public purse with 72 per cent of this... |

At present there is little information on current practices for ectoparasite control in Welsh organic sheep flocks. In order to rectify this lack of information a survey was carried out to investigate current practices for ectoparasite control on Welsh organic sheep farms. The results of this survey are reported in this technical note. The key findings were; • Percentage of farmers treating their flocks for ectoparasite infestations are similar for organic and non-organic sheep farmers • Although scab was listed as a major ectoparasite for both organic and nonorganic flocks only 3% of organic flocks were treated specifically for scab and only 11% of non-organic flocks • There is confusion as to what is the most appropriate treatment for specific... |

During spring 2001/02 organic dairy farmers throughout the UK found themselves in a situation of oversupply, which led to a collapse in milk prices and 37 per cent of organic milk being sold onto the non-organic market. However, the total annual production of organic milk in the UK has stabilised and consumer demand for organic dairy products is growing so it is unlikely to be long before the ‘supply – demand imbalance’ is rectified, potentially leading to an increase in the price paid for organic milk. This factsheet discusses challenges facing the organic dairy sector, marketing opportunities for organic dairy producers, recommendations for producers and a list of sources for further information. |
