Assimilation of shrimp farm sediment by Holothuria scabra : a coupled fatty acid and stable isotope approach ArchiMer
Mathieu-resuge, Margaux; Le Grand, Fabienne; Schaal, Gauthier; Kraffe, Edouard; Lorrain, Anne; Letourneur, Yves; Lemonnier, Hugues; Benoît, Julie; Hochard, Sébastien.
Deposit-feeding sea cucumbers are efficient nutrient recyclers and have the potential to contribute to the limitation of organic matter load in polyculture or integrated aquaculture systems. Assessing how they assimilate organic matter originating from other farmed species is therefore important for the development of such multi-species farming systems. Here, a coupled stable isotope − fatty acid approach was used to characterize the assimilation of organic matter from shrimp (Penaeus stylirostris) farming by Holothuria scabra in an experimental culture system. H. scabra were reared in mesocosms on shrimp farming-originating sediment with and without additional food sources (maize and fish meals). Although fatty acid results did indicate that...

Physiological response of the blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris to short-term confinement on a pond bottom ArchiMer
Mugnier, Chantal; Lemonnier, Hugues; Legrand, Alexandre.
The blue shrimp Litopenaeus stylirostris was exposed to pond sediment for 48 h and its physiological response was studied in relation to molt stage. Shrimp were maintained in cages within a semi-intensive pond after 4 months of rearing. Hypoosmoregulatory capacity (hypo-OC), magnesium ions (Mg ions), glucose, total proteins and oxyhaemocyanin were assayed in haemolymph. An increase of 370% to 500% in Mg ions concentration and 200% to 266% in glucose concentration, and a decrease in hypo-OC in shrimp maintained close to the centre of the pond indicated a short-term stress response in all molt stages. Indicators of water and sediment pore water quality were within normal operating limits, however this area was characterized by high water content and...

Influence of sediment characteristics on shrimp physiology: pH as principal effect ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Bernard, E; Boglio, E; Goarant, Cyrille; Cochard, Jean-claude.
Penaeid shrimp reared in earthen ponds are exposed to sediment, which can, in some instances, induce a stress. In seawater, the osmoregulatory capacity (hyporegulation) is a useful tool to compare the physiological condition of shrimp exposed to various stressors. By keeping some shrimp in cages at different locations of a single pond heterogeneous in terms of sediment quality, it was possible, using osmotic pressure (OP), to identify some locations where the stress was maximum and some others where it was minimum. Simultaneously, sediment samples were taken and analysed in order to evaluate some physico-chemical parameters that could be related to the stress observed in the shrimps kept in the cages. This approach allowed to show a significant positive...

Lemonnier, Hugues.
Shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia is a developing industry, exclusively based on the species Litopenaeus stylirostris. However, it is subject to mortalities during grow out as observed all over the world. Since 1993, shrimp reared during the cold period are affected by a disease named "syndrome 93". As a consequence, the whole industry has become seasonal and produces essentially during the warm season. The climatic conditions during the periods of transition between the two main seasons could be responsible for an environmental stress and the origin reason for mortality outbreaks. Stocking density is the main risk factor. It increases the probability of the appearance and development of the epizooty in the pond. The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic...

Cochard, Jean-claude; Goarant, Cyrille; Boglio, Eric; Lemonnier, Hugues.
The influence of the soil quality of culture pond on the physiological state of Penaeus stylirostris reared in earthen shrimp pond in New Caledonia was investigated by the measurement of the osmoregulatory capacity and magnesium hemolymph concentration of samples of 20 of these shrimp captured in the pond and maintained for 24 or 48h in cages laid on the bottom. A first experiment was affected by the occurrence of a pathology caused by Vibrio penaeicida probably due to initial handling stress. The second experiment showed that the osmoregulatory capacity is depresssed as a function of the soil quality : the more it is reduced the more the depression is important.

Suitability of a lumped rainfall–runoff model for flashy tropical watersheds in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Desclaux, Terence; Lemonnier, Hugues; Genthon, Pierre; Soulard, Benoit; Le Gendre, Romain.
The GR4H lumped hourly rainfall–runoff model was assessed for its integration in a ridge-to-reef modelling framework. Particular attention was paid to rainfall representation, robustness of parameter estimates and ability to reproduce main runoff features. The study was conducted in four tropical mountainous watersheds in New Caledonia, exposed to intense rainfall events, large annual climatic variations triggered by El Niño oscillation, and wildfires. The inverse distance and elevation weighting algorithm outperformed other classical rainfall interpolation methods under data-limited conditions. The time-span of data needed for robust calibration was site-specific and varied from 6–7 years to 10 years, which may be linked to El Niño events and to...

Effect of water exchange on effluent and sediment characteristics and on partial nitrogen budget in semi-intensive shrimp ponds in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Faninoz, Sebastien.
An experiment was conducted in six earthen ponds with 20 shrimps m(-2) Litopenaeus stylirostris (Stimpson) during the warm season in New Caledonia to study the dynamics of wastes in relation with water exchange rate (WER). The nitrogen budget was established, taking into account the different forms of nitrogen in the water, sediment, feed and shrimp. Data from a wide range of treatments applied in unreplicated ponds were treated using regression analysis to establish the relationship between WER and partial nitrogen budget, sediment characteristics and shrimp performance. To compare effluent quality between treatments during the season, data were analysed using the non-parametric sign test. The water outflow was characterized by a decrease in the...

"Summer syndrome" in Litopenaeus stylirostris grow out ponds in New Caledonia: zootechnical and environmental factors ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Herbland, Alain; Salery, Lucas; Soulard, Benoit.
The "Summer Syndrome", a septicemic vibriosis caused by Vibrio nigripulchritudo, is responsible for one of the two main seasonal mortalities which affect shrimp aquaculture in New Caledonia. It was identified for the first time in December 1997 in an intensive shrimp farm (called farm DF) and has been enzootic ever since. The "Summer syndrome" affects shrimp during warm-season growout. Although the geographic area concerned is limited, it is a potential threat for the industry in that the disease could spread. Analysis of grow out data from 1991 to 2002 in this farm was carried out in order to characterize the disease and the environmental conditions in relation to mortality. Results of farm DF were compared to data from farms not affected by the disease...

Response of phytoplankton to organic enrichment and shrimp activity in tropical aquaculture ponds: a mesocosm study ArchiMer
Lemonnier, Hugues; Hochard, Sebastien; Nakagawa, Kento; Courties, Claude; Rodier, Martine.
We conducted a mesocosm study to investigate the combined effect of organic enrichment and sediment resuspension by shrimp on phytoplankton communities in shrimp aquaculture ponds. Hence, the factorial design included two factors, i.e., (i) shrimp density with a concomitant increase of feed input resulting in organic enrichment and (ii) with/without access of shrimp to the sediments. Increasing feed input in the system raised the eutrophication state of the environment characterized by an increase in phytoplankton biomass. Bioturbation enhanced (i) mineralization of organic matter via the microbial loop, resulting in faster nutrient recycling, (ii) an increase of primary production, and (iii) buffering capacity against eutrophication consequences. The...

Surveying shrimp aquaculture pond activity using multitemporal VHSR satellite images - case study from the Perancak estuary, Bali, Indonesia ArchiMer
Gusmawati, Niken; Soulard, Benoit; Selmaoui-folcher, Nazha; Proisy, Christophe; Mustafa, Akhmad; Le Gendre, Romain; Laugier, Thierry; Lemonnier, Hugues.
From the 1980's, Indonesian shrimp production has continuously increased through a large expansion of cultured areas and an intensification of the production. As consequences of diseases and environmental degradations linked to this development, there are currently 250,000 ha of abandoned ponds in Indonesia. To implement effective procedure to undertake appropriate aquaculture ecosystem assessment and monitoring, an integrated indicator based on four criteria using very high spatial optical satellite images, has been developed to discriminate active from abandoned ponds. These criteria were: presence of water, aerator, feeding bridge and vegetation. This indicator has then been applied to the Perancak estuary, a production area in decline, to highlight the...

Study seeks candidates for blue shrimp polyculture in New Caledonia ArchiMer
Luong, Cong Trung; Hochard, Sebastien; Royer, Florence; Lemonnier, Hugues; Letourneur, Yves.
Seasonal pathologies reduce the profitability and sustainability of the shrimp-farming industry in New Caledonia. A study was therefore conducted to estimate the effects of polyculture of blue shrimp with goldline rabbitfish or mullet on production performance and environmental quality. The fish did not affect shrimp production, and the combined shrimp/fish yields were significantly greater than the yield from shrimp monoculture. Changes in environmental quality in all treatments were few and minor throughout the culture period.

Virly, Sabrina; Buisson, Damien; Clough, Barry; Lemonnier, Hugues; Richer De Forges, Bertrand.
