Development of an Unequal Speed Co-axial Split-Rotor Thresher for Riceit CIGR Journal
D. Chimchana,; Asian Institute of Technology; V. M. Salokhe; P. Soni.
During high moisture paddy threshing, the separation losses are generally large. However, while attempting to increase cropping intensity, it is often necessary to handle the moist paddy for threshing. Furthermore, in absence of adequate sunshine hours in wet season, crop can’t be dried to a desired moisture level before threshing. Keeping these requirements in mind, a co-axial split-rotor thresher was designed for threshing high moisture paddy. This paper describes design and testing of a stationary thresher with an unequal speed co-axial split-rotor for rice in Thailand. First rotor serves mainly the threshing operation, whereas, rotating at relatively higher speed, the second rotor does mainly the separation of rice grains from husk. Faster rotation of...

Classification of the cattle behaviors by using magnitude and variance of accelerometer signal CIGR Journal
AURASOPON, APINAN.
Time periods of walking-grazing, standing and lyingof cattle’s life can be used to predict their health. However, famer cannot observe those in all the time. Therefore, this paper proposes a simple technique to classify the cattle behaviors by using the magnitude and the variance of accelerometer output signal. There are two steps of algorithm detection, the first step employed the magnitude of each axis for classifying the cattle behaviors into two groups: 1) walking-grazing and standing and 2) lying. After that, the second step used the variance of Y-axis to notify between walking-grazing and standing behaviors. The classification results were inform time periods of each behavior and tested with two cattle. The measured precise times of each behavior...

The implementation of a dualistic model for scale up of a tunnel drying of cassava chips CIGR Journal
Ajala, Adeladun Stephen.
Tunnel dryer is a combination of two or more cabinet dryers arranged in a serial order in a tunnel. It has found application in drying of both food and non-food origin but its scale up process has hitherto been based on experimentation and experience without comprehensive scientific background which often leads to the poor performance of those dryers. In this study, theoretical modelling for tunnel drying which could effectively predict the dryer’s performance was developed. The modeling process involved the segmentation of drying parameters into an equipment and material models. Equipment model entails the parameters supplied by the dryer such as air temperature, velocity, humidity profiles and heat transfer to the samples being dried (cassava chips)....

Soil Drying Effects on Soil Strength and Depth of Hardpan Layers as Determined from Cone Index Data CIGR Journal
Mehari Z. Tekeste; Randy L. Raper; Eric B. Schwab.
Site-specific detection of a soil hardpan is an important step in precision farming. Different methods have been developed including the ASABE standard soil cone penetrometer to detect presence of hardpan layers. Most of the newly developed methods use results obtained by a soil cone penetrometer as a reference to validate their potential. Soil factors, mainly soil moisture and bulk density, may influence the cone index measurement and the prediction of the relative strength and depth of the hardpan layer. The effects of soil drying on hardpan characterizing attributes of peak cone index, depth to the peak cone index and depth to the top of the hardpan layer were studied for three compaction levels on a Norfolk sandy loam soil in a soil bin. The soil in...

FEM Analysis of Effects of Mechanical Impact Parameters on Fruit Characteristics CIGR Journal
Cerruto, Emanuele; Aglieco, Claudia; Gottschalk, Klaus; Surdilovic, Jelena; Manetto, Giuseppe; Geyer, Martin.
Mechanical impact on fresh agriculture commodities may be a criterial issue during mechanical processes such as grading, sorting, conveying, packing or transport. The applications of electronic measuring devices in form of artificial fruits like ‘Instrumented Spheres’ (IS) are an aid to quantify influences of mechanical impact on the value of fruit, vegetable and potato. Additionally, modelling and simulation of impact on fruits helps to identify those influencing parameters. In this study, modelling and simulation runs were performed based on the Finite Element Method (FEM). For dropping tests an ‘Acceleration Measuring Unit’ (AMU) was used which can be implemented into real or artificial fruits to measure the accelerations upon impact. The test stand was...
