[Proceedings of the 5th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans, Krakow, Poland, 2013: A tribute to Pál Mihály Müller / R.H.B. Fraaije, M. Hyžný, J.W.M. Jagt, M. Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: Neozanthopsis americana (Decapoda, Brachyura, Carpilioidea) from the Middle Eocene Cane River Formation of Louisiana, USA, and associated teleost otoliths Naturalis
Schweitzer, C.E.; Feldmann, R.M.; Stringer, G.L..
A large collection of Neozanthopsis americana (Rathbun, 1928) from the Middle Eocene (Lutetian) Cane River Formation in Louisiana, USA, represents the first opportunity to describe the species in detail. Detailed analysis of associated teleost otoliths and other vertebrate remains documents a palaeoenvironmental setting characterised by a soft-sediment, inner-shelf setting with normal salinity under tropical or subtropical conditions. Anatomical and morphometric analysis of 21 of the better-preserved crabs demonstrates that gender discrimination cannot be made from dorsal carapace characteristics and that the sample represents post-juvenile individuals. Exocuticle and endocuticle are preserved on some specimens and document the presence of erect...

Pleistocene vertebrates from Celebes : XI. Molars and a tusked mandible of Archidiskodon celebensis Hooijer Naturalis
Hooijer, D.A..
The species mentioned in the title of the present contribution was first described on the base of two incomplete upper molars, some fragments, and two portions of limb bones (Hooijer, 1949). The two and only complete molars were described later (Hooijer, 1953a). To this has been added the description of the milk dentition and of three premolars (Hooijer, 1953c). There are, however, important lacunae in our knowledge of the molar dentition to be filled. It remains as yet uncertain whether the type upper molar of 1949 represents M2 or M3, while the smaller of the complete lower molars of 1953 could be either M1 or M2. The prolonged study of the fragmentary molars in the Celebes collection has now made it possible to assemble the full set of upper and lower...

Krobicki & B.W.M. van Bakel (eds.)]: Dynomenid crabs (Decapoda, Brachyura) and stalked barnacles (Cirripedia, Scalpelliformes) from upper Cenomanian-lower Turonian nearshore, shallow-water strata in the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin, Czech Republic Naturalis
Kočová Veselská, M.; Kočí, T.; Kubajko, M..
Crustacea (dynomenid crabs and cirripedes) from the upper Cenomanian-lower Turonian nearshore, shallow-water bioclastic limestones to marly siltstones found along the southern and eastern margins of the Bohemian Cretaceous Basin (BCB) are described. Crabs are rather rare in this area, and mostly restricted to fragmentary pereiopods, i.e., isolated claws or dactyli. In view of the confused taxonomy of isolated claws, their proper identity could not be determined; they were mostly referred to the necrocarcinid genus Necrocarcinus Bell, 1863. A recent re-examination of material deposited in the collections of the National Museum (Národní Muzeum, Prague), and of new finds, has revealed that all allegedly necrocarcinid pereiopods and nearly all carapaces from...

Insectivores (Lipotyphla, Mammalia) from the Ramblian of the Daroca-Calamocha area Naturalis
Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den.
The insectivore assemblages from the Ramblian stratotype near Calamocha (Spain) are described, as well as those from San Roque 4A and 4B, two Ramblian localities near the Aragonian stratotype. Two new species are described, the erinaceid Galerix remmerti, and the shrew Clapasorex alvarezae. Both the percentages and the diversity of insectivores are higher in the Lower Ramblian, suggesting more humid conditions in zone Z than in zone A. This is in contradiction with the palaeoenvironmental reconstructions based on rodents. Se describen las asociaciones de insectívoros del estratotipo del Rambliense cerca de Calamocha (Teruel, España), junto de las de San Roque 4A y 4B, dos yacimientos Ramblienses del área-tipo del Aragoniense. Some new species of the subfamily ‘Leptoceratoidinae’ (Ancyloceratina, Ammonoidea) in uppermost Hauterivian and lower Barremian deposits from Rumania Naturalis
Avram, E..
The Berriasian — lower Valanginian genus Leptoceras reappears in the lower Barremian sequences of Rumania, where it is represented by at least two species: L. brunneriforme sp. nov. and L. svinitense sp. nov. This record has led to a revision of the so far accepted taxonomic interpretation of the criomorph Barremian Leptoceratoidinae and of their relationship with the Berriasian-Valanginian Protancyloceratinae. In addition, a new species of the genus Hamulinites (H. nicklesi, from the uppermost Hauterivian) provides evidence that the genus Eoleptoceras Manolov should be considered valid.

Feldmann, R.M.; Schweitzer, C.E.; Portell, R.W..
The present record of two species of brachyurous decapod crustaceans, Costacopluma grayi Feldmann & Portell, 2007 and Stevea martini sp. nov., from the lower Paleocene Pine Barren Member (Clayton Formation) in south-central Alabama, constitutes an extension of the range of the former and the sole occurrence of the latter. Previously, C. grayi was described from the middle Eocene Tallahatta Formation in Alabama. Stevea martini sp. nov. constitutes only the second species of the genus and the sole fossil occurrence known to date.

Miocene Decapoda and Mollusca from Ramsel (province of Antwerpen, Belgium), with a new crab genus and a new cephalopod species Naturalis
Janssen, A.W.; Muller, P..
Reworked phosphoritic concretions from the base of the Diest Sands (Miocene) at Ramsel (Belgium) yield many magnificent crabs and molluscs in mould preservation. Two species of crabs are present, viz. Mursia lienharti (Bachmayer, 1961) and Tasadia carniolica (Bittner, 1884), Tasadia being a new genus. The palaeoecology of the decapod fauna is discussed and compared with Paratethyan occurrences. The age of the fauna in the concretions as indicated by the mollusc fauna is Middle Miocene, Hemmoorian, youngest Oxlundian. A similar fauna, also in reworked concretions, is known from the base of the Deurne Sands at Borgerhout (Antwerpen city area). A new coleoid cephalopod species, Spirulirostra baetensi sp. nov., is described. The European Spirulirostra and...

Substantiation of the Barremian/Aptian boundary Naturalis
Bogdanova, T.N.; Prozorovsky, V.A..
This paper focuses on the Barremian/Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area. Results of a stratigraphical study of the uppermost Barremian and the lower Aptian succession in the Trans-Caspian area are presented. The bed-by-bed description of three sections — Keldzhe, Tekedzhik and Utuludzha — is given as well as detailed lithologic columns. Five ammonite zones are known in the studied stratigraphic interval — the Turkmeniceras turkmenicum, Deshayesites tuarkyricus, D. weissi, D. deshayesi, and Dufrenoya furcata zones. These zones are correlated with those of Europe. The Barremian/ Aptian boundary in the Trans-Caspian area should be drawn at the base of the D. tuarkyricus Zone. It corresponds to the layers with the first occurrences of Deshayesites,...

On fossil and prehistoric remains of Tapirus from Java, Sumatra and China Naturalis
Hooijer, D.A..
The tapir is an extremely rare element in the fossil Mammalian fauna of Java. In the enormous collection of fossil teeth and bones brought together in this island by Eug. Dubois in the years 1890 to 1900, the tapir is represented only by six teeth, originating from three localities in the Kendeng Mts., viz., Kedoeng Broeboes, Kedoeng Loemboe, and Kebon Doeren. Previous to his researches in Java, Dubois collected teeth in a number of caves in the Padang Highlands. In this Sumatran collection Tapirus is not uncommon. We possess one hundred and twenty complete, and a still larger number of broken teeth. Half of this collection originates from three caves, viz., the Lida Ajer cave near Pajakombo, the Sibrambang cave, and the Djamboe cave near Tapisello. The...

[The fossil record of the Eurasian Neogene insectivores (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha, Mammalia) : Part I / L.W. van den Hoek Ostende, C.S. Doukas and J.W.F. Reumer (editors)]: Germany Naturalis
Ziegler, R.; Dahlmann, Th.; Reumer, J.W.F.; Storch, G..
Introduction Research of Miocene and Pliocene insectivores has a long history in Germany. Already in the middle of the 19th century Miocene insectivore species have been described from South German localities. Most of these were authored by Herman von Meyer, who deserves to be named a pioneer of German insectivores research. Weisenau, today part of the city of Mainz, is the type locality of Dimylus paradoxus described by von Meyer (1846:473). Haslach near Ulm yielded the type of Cordylodon haslachensis, also described by von Meyer (1859: 174). The widely known Steinheim fauna yielded among others the type of Parasorex socialis, again described by von Meyer (1865:884). Von Meyer often received fossils from private collectors for determination. Usually, he...

Early Miocene Cricetidae (Rodentia, Mammalia) from Buñol (Prov. Valencia, Spain) Naturalis
Daams, R.; Freudenthal, M..
The Cricetidae remains from Buñol, collected by field parties of the Department of Paleontology (State University of Utrecht, The Netherlands), are described. Three previously known species have been recognized: Megacricetodon minor primitivus (Freudenthal, 1963), Democricetodon aff. hispanicus Freudenthal, 1967 and Fahlbuschia cf. koenigswaldi (Freudenthal, 1963). One new species is described: Eumyarion valencianum. The presence of M. m. primitivus points to an Early Miocene age (collongensis Assemblage-Zone).

Molluscs and Echinoderms from Palaeolithic deposits in the Rock Shelter of Ksâr'akil, Lebanon Naturalis
Regteren, C.O. van.
INTRODUCTION The palaeolithic deposits of the rock shelter of Ksâr'Akil in the Antelias valley have been excavated by a group of American Jesuits in the years 1937-1938 and 1947-1948. Recently the fossil bones from these deposits were reported upon by my colleague Hooijer (1961). When he received the material for description it appeared that his samples contained a large collection of molluscan shells and a few spines of echinoderms as well. These are dealt with in the present paper. To the best of my knowledge they are all the remains of molluscs and echinoderms found during the excavation. For further details on the collection and the site I refer to Hooijer's paper, which also contains references to the literature on Ksâr'Akil. A few shells from the...

Bemerkungen zu der Astartiden-Fauna des jüngeren Känozoikums des Nordseebeckens Naturalis
Janssen, A.W.; Slik, L. van der.
Two new species and a new subspecies of the Astartidae (Mollusca, Bivalvia) are described from reworked shell material of beaches and estuaries in the Province of Zeeland, The Netherlands. Nomenclatural notes concerning some other species of the same family are added. Furthermore an attempt is made to demonstrate the phylogenetical development of the Astarte (Isocrassina) fusca and the A. (I.) omalii group from the younger Caenozoic (Miocene to Quaternary) of the North Sea Basin.

Estudio sistemático y bioestratigráfico de los Eomyidae (Rodentia) del Oligoceno superior y Mioceno inferior español = Taxonomy and biostratigraphy of Eomyidae (Rodentia) from the upper Oligocene and lower Miocene of Spain Naturalis
Alvarez Sierra, M.A..
This paper is the first fundamental study on Spanish Eomyidae. The flourishing time of this family in Europe was the Late Oligocene and Early Miocene. Four genera are recognized in this time span: Rhodanomys Depéret & Douxami, 1902, Ritteneria Stehlin & Schaub, 1951, Pseudotheridomys Schlosser, 1926, and Ligerimys Stehlin & Schaub,1951. The study is based on more than 8000 dental elements from 32 localities, which are situated in the following basins: Ebro Basin (provinces of La Rioja and Huesca), Almazán Basin (province of Zaragoza), Calatayud-Teruel Basin (provinces of Zaragoza and Teruel), Loranca Basin (province of Cuenca), and the Buñol Basin (province of Valencia). The following, anteriorly described species are recognized: Rhodanomys...

The Middle Aragonian (Middle Miocene) Micromammals from La Retama (Intermediate Depression, Tagus Basin) Province of Cuenca, Spain Naturalis
Álvarez Sierra, M.A.; García Paredes, I.; Hoek Ostende, L.W. van den; Meulen, A.J. van der; Peláez-Campomanes, P.; Sevilla, P..
The micromammal fauna from the Middle Miocene (Middle Aragonian) of La Retama, eastern central Spain, is described. It is a relatively poor rodent fauna composed by ten species only, associated to a highly diverse bat fauna, which includes five genera. The insectivores are represented by two species. This fossil assemblage has been correlated to zone Db (MN 5). The palaeoenvironmental reconstruction based on micromammals indicates open and dry conditions for this locality.

Fossil brachiopods from the Pleistocene of the Antilles Naturalis
Harper, D.A.T.; Donovan, S.K..
Pleistocene brachiopods are poorly known from the Antillean region, but are locally common in forereef deposits of Jamaica (lower Pleistocene Manchioneal Formation) and Barbados (Coral Rock). Of the four species known, two are new. Lacazella sp. cf. L. caribbeanensis Cooper, an encrusting thecideidean, is known from only three valves. Other species are terebratulides. Tichosina inconstanta sp. nov. is a large, ventribiconvex Tichosina species of elongate oval to tear-drop shaped outline, variably uniplicate with a pedicle foramen of moderate diameter. It differs from the similar Tichosina? bartletti (Dall) in having a larger pedicle foramen and a less-marked plication. Argyrotheca barrettiana (Davidson) is a medium to large, usually transverse Argyrotheca...

[Proceedings of the symposium 'Molluscan Palaeontology' : 11th International Malacological Congress, Siena (Italy) 30th August - 5th September 1992 / A.W. Janssen and R. Janssen (editors)]: Jurassic gastropods from Sicily; new data to the classification of Ataphridae (Trochoidea) Naturalis
Szabó, J.; Conti, M.A.; Monari, S..
Members of Ataphridae became a progressive group in one of the two types of Tethyan faunas. Some of the new forms, which evolved from ataphrid ancestors, can be classified within the family, whilst others show a transitional morphology towards the turbinid subfamily Colloniinae. Other finds suggest a close relationship between Ataphridae and Crossostomatidae.

[The fossil record of the Eurasian Neogene insectivores (Erinaceomorpha, Soricomorpha, Mammalia) : Part I / L.W. van den Hoek Ostende, C.S. Doukas and J.W.F. Reumer (editors)]: The Netherlands Naturalis
Reumer, J.W.F..
Introduction This chapter concerns Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene) insectivores from The Netherlands. The same biogeographical and tectonical realm, i.e. the southeastern part of the North Sea Basin, also has several sites in the western part of Germany, but these localities are discussed in the chapter on Germany (Ziegler et al., 2005). Most of the region concerned was covered by (often shallow) seas during most of the Neogene. A late Miocene coastline can be reconstructed as running in a SW- NE direction from Antwerp (Belgium), Liessel (The Netherlands, province of Noord-Brabant), Uedem/Kevelaer (Germany, Land Nordrhein-Westfalen), to Miste/Winterswijk (The Netherlands, province of Gelderland) by the finds of glauconitic greensand-deposits containing...
