Since 1976, France participates to the International Bottom Trawl Survey (IBTS), coordinated by the International Council for Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The main objective of these surveys, which are carried out on board of research vessels, was to obtain annual forecasts of recruitment for the various commercial fish species of the North Sea. These estimates were used by ICES Working Groups to assess these various stocks and to propose management measures for the following year. In addition, the data collected during these surveys concerned biological and abundance analysis of main commercial fish species exploited by European countries in the North Sea. The results of studies were published in scientific papers and have improved knowledge in this... |

The authors have studied the structure of the fishing fleet for artisanal and industrial fisheries and its activities in the harbours of the Atlantic coast: Douarnenez, Concarneau, Lorient, Saint-Nazaire, Nantes, La Rochelle, Bayonne etc. It appears that the decline of the traditional fishery corresponds to the degradation of the stocks, especially the hake and megrim stocks. The industrial fishery supports the consequences of this overfishing while the artisanal trawling fishery showed in 1975 a relative prosperity. In conclusion, it is evident that stock degradation is chiefly caused by fisheries utilizing too narrow meshes. This is not irreversible and it is probable that a sensible widening of the meshes would permit better management of the potential... |

Age is a necessary parameter used in population dynamics to assess the state of exploited resources. This parameter is poorly known for most deep-sea species (depth > 400 m). This work focused on age estimation from otoliths of Alepocephalus bairdii (Alepocephalidae), Coryphaenoides rupestris (Macrouridae), Helicolenus dactylopterus (Sebastidae) and Hoplostethus atlanticus (Trachichthyidae), which French fishery exploitation, off the west coasts of the British Isles, began the late 1980's. Considering otolith growth zones as annual, the four species all show high longevity: 38, 54, 43 and 130 years, respectively, together with slow growth. The differences in growth between sex were estimated and difficulties in accurately estimating the age were... |

Forty one manned submersible dives were carried out during 2 cruises in the Bay of Biscay covering a range of depth from about 100 to 2100 m. Chondrichthyan species were observed in most of the dives, some of them were easily identified and their behaviour could be studied. Twenty-two chondrichthyan species (9 sharks, 8 rays and 5 chimaeras) were recorded. Shark species were always seen active except Scyliorhinus canicula and Galeus melastomus. Some representatives were found motionless on the bottom, sometimes forming groups for the first species. Chimaeras appeared to strongly react to the presence of the submersible. The density of chondrichtyes and their relative frequency in the total fish assemblage were estimated, the results are globally consistent... |

Chlamys varia has a great potential of culture in Galicia, and it is likely to be among the pectinids, both a complement and an alternative to raft mussel culture which is dominant in the region. The present work attempts to analyse the growth of nursery spat of 6.46 plus or minus 0.75 mm reared in a raft during fifteen months in different depth and densities. The final average height is between 36.49 plus or minus 0.56 mm in the group of high density in the bottom and 40.75 plus or minus 0.55 mm in those of low density at the surface. Different culture densities have shown significant differences in growth (p < 0.001). However, different depths have not shown such differences. At the end of this period mortality is lower than 2% in all groups. |

A national program started in 1989 to drive researches on Ruditapes philippinarum brown ring disease correlated with a vibrio called P1. The researches have concerned epidemiological surveys on spats and adults, treatment methods, diagnostic techniques, and anatomical and functional studies about the vibrio-clam relations. The transmissions of the disease appeared mainly related to contaminated manila clam seeds, with secondary horizontal propagation. The brown ring formation appeared to be caused by a periostracum deterioration. Taking into account some of these results, an adapted cultural technique including special care of seeds and decreased densities was proposed to the farmers. |

Phaeocystis , a nanoplanktonic algae, appears in the eastern Channel and in the south of the North Sea, at the end of the microplanktonic spring outburst, with often considerable density. At that time, acrylic acid is excreted in the water. On account of its well known antibiotic activity, one could wonder if a bloom of Phaeocystis might be responsible for an antibacterial effect of the sea water. Acrylic acid has been detected in spring 1981 during the Phaeocystis bloom. Its concentration was greatly inferior to the 50% inhibitory concentration measured in vitro against natural bacterial population. Furthermore, results about primary and heterotrophic productions show a sharp synchronism in the peak of intensity. This means, at least, there is no... |
