The Potential of Microalgae for the Production of Bioactive Molecules of Pharmaceutical Interest ArchiMer
Mimouni, Virginie; Ulmann, Lionel; Pasquet, Virginie; Mathieu, Marie; Picot, Laurent; Bougaran, Gael; Cadoret, Jean-paul; Morant-manceau, Annick; Schoefs, Benoit.
Through the photosynthetic activity, microalgae process more than 25% of annual inorganic carbon dissolved in oceans into carbohydrates that ultimately, serve to feed the other levels of the trophic networks. Besides, microalgae synthesize bioactive molecules such as pigments and lipids that exhibit health properties. In addition, abiotic stresses, such as high irradiance, nutrient starvation, UV irradiation, trigger metabolic reorientations ending with the production of other bioactive compounds such as omega-3 fatty acids or carotenoids. Traditionally, these compounds are acquired through the dietary alimentation. The increasing, and often unsatisfied, demand for compounds from natural sources, combined with the decrease of the halieutic resources,...

Abstract: The objective of this work was to estimate the phenotypic correlation and the direct and indirect effects of the aerial part components of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) that are associated with root distribution, in order to facilitate the indirect selection for this character. Sixteen genotypes were used, from which 12 are segregating populations in the F6 generation and four are fixed populations, which were conducted in field conditions in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates. The root system evaluation was performed according to Böhm’s method. Pearson’s phenotypic correlation was estimated by the path analysis. The characters stem diameter, leaf area index, first pod set, and root angle showed the highest positive...

Yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits used in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency in corn PAB
Morais,Pedro Patric Pinho; Sousa,Massaine Bandeira e; Galli,Giovanni; Andrade,Luciano Rogério Braatz e; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Oliveira,Aluízio Borém de.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to examine the possibility of using yield components and reproductive, physiological, and root traits in early selection for nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in corn. Sixty-four inbred lines were evaluated under two nitrogen fertilization levels: ideal and low. The evaluations were performed at three phenological stages: eight fully-expanded leaves, tasseling stage, and physiological maturity. It is possible to select superior lines for NUE, but the yield components did not show differential behavior under the different nitrogen levels evaluated. Root, reproductive, and physiological traits are not promising for early selection of corn lines with high NUE. Likewise, the eight-leaves and tasseling stages were not...

Combining ability of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress PAB
Souza,Leandro Vagno de; Miranda,Glauco Vieira; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso; Guimarães,Lauro José Moreira; Santos,Izabel Cristina dos.
The objectives of this work were to caracterize the tropical maize germplasm and to compare the combining abilities of maize grain yield under different levels of environmental stress. A diallel was performed among tropical maize cultivars with wide adaptability, whose hybrid combinations were evaluated in two sowing dates, in two years. The significance of the environmental effect emphasized the environmental contrasts. Based on grain yield, the environments were classified as favorable (8,331 kg ha-1), low stress (6,637 kg ha-1), high stress (5,495 kg ha-1), and intense stress (2,443 kg ha-1). None of the genetic effects were significant in favorable and intense stress environments, indicating that there was low germplasm variability under these...

Pereira,Rogério Gomes; Heinemann,Alexandre Bryan; Madari,Beata Emoke; Carvalho,Marcia Thais de Melo; Kliemann,Huberto José; Santos,Aurélio Pereira dos.
The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of eucalyptus biochar on the transpiration rate of upland rice 'BRSMG Curinga' as an alternative means to decrease the effect of water stress on plant growth and development. Two-pot experiments were carried out using a completely randomized block design, in a split-plot arrangement, with six replicates. Main plots were water stress (WS) and no-water stress (NWS), and the subplots were biochar doses at 0, 6, 12 and 24% in growing medium (sand). Total transpirable soil water (TTSW), the p factor - defined as the average fraction of TTSW which can be depleted from the root zone before water stress limits growth -, and the normalized transpiration rate (NTR) were determined. Biochar addition increased TTSW...

Water relations in physic nut according to climatic seasonality, in semiarid conditions PAB
Rodrigues,Bruno Monteiro; Arcoverde,Gabriela Burle; Antonino,Antônio Celso Dantas; Santos,Mauro Guida.
The objective of this work was to determine the effect of climatic seasonality on physic nut (Jatropha curcas), in field, under semiarid climate conditions. Stomatal conductance (g s), transpiration (E), soluble leaf carbohydrates (SLC), free amino acids (FAA) and total proteins (TP) were measured in leaves, in a commercial plantation in Northeast Brazil, during the summer and autumn. Plants showed high g s and E, as well as SLC, FAA and TP contents in the summer, which gradually decreased with the lower temperatures and photosynthetically active radiation during the autumn, despite the higher water availability. Even in conditions of adequate water availability, the combination of low temperatures and reduced light drastically decreased foliar metabolism.

The use of sunflower transcription factors as biotechnological tools to improve yield and stress tolerance in crops Phyton
Chan,R.L.
Transcription factors (TFs) are proteins able to specifically recognize DNA sequences in the regulatory regions of their target genes. They bind these specific sequences, an event that leads to the activation or repression of whole signal transduction pathways. In plants about 1500 TFs were informatically identified; identification was mainly based in the presence of DNA-binding domains in the translated sequences. They were classified in families and subfamilies according to several features, including the conservation of the DNA binding domain, the genes structures and the functions they exert. Among transcription factors, several seem to be potential powerful biotechnological tools to improve crops via obtaining transgenic plants. Assigned purposes...

Effect of Trinexapac-Ethyl, at Two Application Timings, on the Initial Development of Eucalyptus under Water Deficit Planta Daninha
BACHA,A.L.; MARTINS,P.F.R.B.; ALVES,P.L.C.A.; PAULA,R.C..
ABSTRACT: Eucalyptus plants are sensitive to stress during their initial development, and water deficit is the most important one. Thus, the hormetic effect caused by the application of chemical products may be a factor that allows plants to tolerate such stresses. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of trinexapac-ethyl on the initial growth of Eucalyptus urophylla (Clone I-144), under water deficiency, at two application timings (before planting - BP; and after planting - AP). Two experiments were conducted simultaneously in a greenhouse for 74 days after planting (DAP) eucalyptus in 15 L pots. Treatments consisted of three trinexapac-ethyl doses (0.0, 30, and 60 g a.i. ha-1) and two water conditions (with and without water deficit). A...

Water stress and temperature on germination and vigor of Handroanthus impetiginosus (Mart. ex DC) AGRIAMBI
Santos,Paulo C. S.; Benedito,Clarisse P.; Alves,Tatianne R. C.; Paiva,Emanoela P.; Sousa,Erivanessa C.; Freires,Afonso L. A..
ABSTRACT Water availability and temperature are among the main abiotic factors that influence seed germination and vigor, since they act directly on biochemical and physiological processes, which result in the production of the primary root. The objective of this study was to verify the effects of stress on germination and vigor of H. impetiginosus (‘ipê-roxo’) seeds under different temperatures and osmotic agents. The experimental design was completely randomized, in a 6 x 2 factorial scheme (osmotic potentials x temperatures) with four replicates of 25 seeds for each osmotic agent. In order to simulate water stress, polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) and mannitol solutions were used and distilled water was used as control. Osmotic potentials of 0, -0.2,...

Sousa,Eduardo C.; Silva,Daniel V.; Sousa,Danielle M. M.; Torres,Salvador B.; Oliveira,Renata R. T..
ABSTRACT Seed germination of species that develop in arid and semi-arid soils can be altered by water deficit and abundance of salts in the soil. Knowledge on tolerance limits is fundamental to understand the adaptive capacity of species under such conditions. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physiological changes (germination and vigor) of Mimosa caesalpiniifolia seeds from different regions and submitted to water and saline stresses. To simulate water stress, the osmotic agent polyethylene glycol (PEG 6000) was adjusted to the potentials of 0, -0.2, -0.4, -0.6 and -0.8 MPa, whereas for the saline stress, NaCl solutions were adjusted to the potentials of 0, -0.1, -0.3, -0.5, -0.7; -0.9 and -1.1 MPa. The experimental design was completely...

Critical periods of sorghum and palisadegrass in intercropped cultivation for climatic risk zoning R. Bras. Zootec.
Lima,Nino Rodrigo Cabral de Barros; Santos,Patricia Menezes; Mendonça,Fernando Campos; Araujo,Leandro Coelho de.
The objective of this work was to define critical periods for sorghum and palisadegrass cultivated on crop-livestock integrated systems under water deficit. An experiment was carried out in a completely random block design with four treatments (control and interruption of water supply in three periods) and three replicates. Water supply was interrupted until soil water humidity was close to permanent wilting point at the phases: germination of palisadegrass seeds; start of tillering of palisadegrass and initiation of panicles of shorghum; start of shorghum flowering. Water deficit starting at palisadegrass germination delayed intital development of the plants because of the reduction in tillering. Water restriction at panicle initiation phase and at...

Early indirect selection for nitrogen use efficiency in maize1 Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Caixeta,Débora Santos; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto; Granato,Ítalo Stefanine Correia; Oliveira,Lucimar Rodrigues de; Galvão,João Carlos Cardoso.
Several studies to evaluate nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have been carried out using early growth stages. However, there are no scientific reports on the ideal stage for evaluation and on which characteristics have the highest correlation with the NUE at that stage. The aim therefore was to identify the phenological stages and secondary characteristics which maximize accuracy in early indirect selection for NUE in maize. To do this, three endogamic maize strains were evaluated in a completely randomised design with five replications, in a triple factorial scheme (strains x N levels x phenological stage), at two contrasting nitrogen levels: low and high nitrogen. The plants were evaluated at five growth stages: stage nine (V9), with 14 fully-developed...

Genetic control of traits associated with phosphorus use efficiency in maize by REML/BLUP Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
DoVale,Júlio César; Fritsche-Neto,Roberto.
The improvement phosphorus use efficiency (PUE) allows to reach satisfactory yields with lower costs. A breeding strategy for PUE is to increase its components, the phosphorus acquisiton efficiency (PAE) and phosphorus utilization efficiency (PUtE). Thus, this study aimed to identify: i) the relative importance of the components of PUE, in high and low phosphorus; ii) the relationship of root system length and shoot dry mass (SDM) with PUE and its components and; iii) the genetic control of traits associated with the PUE. Forty-one hybrid combinations were evaluated in two experimental environments representing contrasting conditions of availability of phosphorus: low (LP) and high (HP). A randomized block design with two replications were used in simple...

Water restriction and physiological traits in soybean genotypes contrasting for nitrogen fixation drought tolerance Scientia Agricola
Cerezini,Paula; Fagotti,Dáfila dos Santos Lima; Pípolo,Antonio Eduardo; Hungria,Mariangela; Nogueira,Marco Antonio.
ABSTRACT Biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) is essential to the economic viability of the soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] crop in Brazil, but drought may impair the BNF processes. We evaluated physiological traits of nitrogen fixation drought-tolerant (NFDT) (R01-581F, R01-416F and R02-1325) and drought-susceptible (CD 215 and BRS 317) genotypes of soybean subjected to drought or regular water supply between 45 and 55 days after emergence, in an experiment under greenhouse conditions in pots containing non-sterile soil. R01-581F had more stable photosynthetic and transpiration rates, and higher intercellular CO2 levels under drought. Drought reduced the chlorophyll concentration in all genotypes, but with less intensity in R01-581F and R02-1325. The...
