The present study was aimed at the macroanatomical and histological investigation and the demonstration of the structural characteristics of the uropygial gland in the white stork. The uropygial gland of two adult male white storks constituted the material of the study. It was determined that the gland was situated subcutaneously in between the caudal aspect of the lumbosacral bone and the first coccygeal vertebrae. The gland was composed of two lobes, which displayed an oval appearance when viewed from above and resembled a water drop when observed medially. Tuft of feathers were present on the caudal margin of each lobe. The present study revealed that the uropygial gland of the white stork is a simple tubular gland, which discharges its secretion into... |

From a biomechanical standpoint, bone geometry and density are factors correlated to the bone resistance of the femur when supporting body weight, with geometric parameters like the diameter of the femoral head and neck, the length of the femoral neck, and the femoral neck angle as determinant factors in the incidence of hip fractures, which increase in frequency and seriousness in osteoporotic patients. In Chile, morphometric data that contributes to relating the anatomy of the proximal epiphysis of the femur as an associated factor in hip fractures does not exist; likewise, there are no anthropometric indexes that may contribute to the forensic sciences. The purpose of this study is to establish average measurements of the proximal epiphysis of the femur... |

In camels, the rostral epidural rete mirabile had a spongy appearance, and consisted of a dense network of anastomosing arteries occupying the entire cavity of the cavernous sinus. In this study, we measured the length of each rostral epidural rete mirabile lobe, taken between the rostral and the caudal roots dissected in situ before spreading and after reconstitution, and the total length of the rostral epidural rete mirabile after linear reconstitution. The length of the left lobe of the rete was 6.0±0.4 mm and the length of the right lobe was 5.8 ± 0.5 mm. The combined length of the RERM after separation of the arteries was 305.2±9.7 cm. To conclude, we added information to literature in relation to morphometry of the camel RERM and showed this... |

For adequate treatment of patients with breast cancer, mastologists should have a complete understanding of the anatomy of the thoracic wall, axilla and breast. However, the classical anatomical descriptions in textbooks make it difficult to gain full mastery of this subject, because the books usually deal with its elements separately. In an endeavor to resolve this difficulty, the present authors have conducted an extensive review, to describe the muscles, blood vessels and nerves of the thoracic wall and in the axilla that are of interest to mastologists. The axilla was described in detail, with emphasis on its limits, walls and contents, and highlighting the lymph nodes in this region. Finally, the anatomy of the breast and its topography, innervation,... |

The purpose of this study was to determine the localization of the asterion according to the anatomical landmarks of posterior cranial fossa and its relation with sinuses for posterolateral surgical approaches in newborns. On 70 head-halves, a needle about 2 mm with diameter was placed on the centre point of asterion (posterolateral fontanel) by inserting into the whole cranial bony tissue by forming an right angle with the bony surface. Various localizations of asterion and its measurements from the internal and external anatomical landmarks were investigated on term neonatal cadavers. The localization of asterion was found as on the sigmoid-transverse sinus junction (STJ) (5., 6., 7., 8. squares) in 40% of cases on right side and in 34%, on left side.... |

The aim of this study was to perform a descriptive study of the morphology, anatomical variations and morphometry of medial talocrural (or deltoid) ligament. We dissected 27 lower limbs obtained from amputations without histories of age, sex or disease. The measurements were made with a caliper, compass and ruler, expressing the results in millimeters. We described the superficial layer morphology of the medial ligament, measuring the size and ligament's thickness. For the deep layer we described and measured the length (l), width (w) and thickness (t). Results: Superficial layer: trapezoid form=66.7% (anterior margin=30.5 mm; posterior margin=27.6 mm; top margin=22.6 mm; bottom margin=50.5 mm), rectangular form=19% (anterior margin=19.3 mm; posterior... |

A study was conducted on 70 embryo/ foetii of goats to observe the descent of testis. These foetii were grouped into I (0-30 days), II (31-60 days), III (61-90 days), IV (91-120days) and V (121 days up to term, having 14 embryos/ foetii in each group. The genital ridge was observed at 1.2cm CRL (23 day) on the ventromedial aspect of mesonephros. At 42nd day, the genital ridge developed into cylindrical structure, the testis, located in the middle of metanephros. The abdominal migration was completed upto 88th day. The testes were situated in the inguinal canal from 89th to 95th day. From 90th day onward, scrotal migration had been observed, however the testis did not reach the base of the scrotum up to term. During the descent of testis, a peritoneal fold... |

The objective of this work is to give a complementary description of the hepatic lobulation, the hepatic ligaments and the omenta of the nutria. Thirty nutrias were studied by gross dissection. The liver of the nutria was divided into six lobules as follows: left lateral, left medial, quadrate, right medial, right lateral, and caudate lobes. The caudate lobe was divided into a papillary and a caudate process. A whole falciform ligament, extending as far as the navel, was found in all animals. This one was the only ligament that contained fat in between its sheets, and it was abundant in the umbilical part. The left triangular ligament had two parts. One of them was attached to the left lateral lobe of the liver and the other one to the left medial lobe.... |

The morphology of the acromion, its relation to the coracoid process and the supraglenoid tubercle is important in the determination of the dimension of the subacromial space, considering that the variations of these structures can promote pathologies such as impingement syndrome of the subacromial space. There is little information on the different dimensions and forms of the acromion. We studied in 36 scapulae at the museum of the Anatomy Unit, Universidad de La Frontera, the following parameters: length, denseness, width, anterior projection, distance acromiocoracoid and acromion supraglenoid. According to this form, the type was qualified in acromion type I (plane) type II (curved) and type III (hooked). The averages of the variable length, anterior... |

The aim of this study was to produce pictures of the knees from an embalmed cadaver and another fresh cadaver with various levels of dissection, flexion, and rotation, consequently to aid medical students and doctors in studying knee anatomy. In this study, we intended to improve the accessibility of the numerous knee photographs, by entering them into our own made browsing software. This software could be downloaded for free from the website (anatomy.co.kr). In the software, a displayed array consisted of four pictures: a knee at three different depths of dissection and the same knee in flexed state. The knee could be rotated interactively at every 5° angle. Annotation of important knee structures could be seen at 90° angle intervals. With the browsing... |

This study had the purpose of enlarging the data on the Brazilian people, providing anatomic fundamentals that allow a better comprehension of clinical and pathological states involving the hip joint. Sixty-six human femurs, 33 right and 33 left, were used, coming from the Laboratory of Human Anatomy of the Universidade Paranaense UNIPAR. All the bones had adult characteristics, but no sex, race or age identifications. None of them presented visible abnormalities or signs of arthrosis. The following morphometric measures were made: angle of the femur neck, circumference of the femur head and neck, length of the femur neck and of the whole bone. The comparative analysis of the angle of the femur neck between the right and left sides of adults... |
