A Macroanatomical and Histological Study of the Uropygial Gland in the White Stork (Ciconia cicionia) International Journal of Morphology
Kozlu,Tolunay; Bozkurt,Yesim Akaydin; Ates,Sevinc.
The present study was aimed at the macroanatomical and histological investigation and the demonstration of the structural characteristics of the uropygial gland in the white stork. The uropygial gland of two adult male white storks constituted the material of the study. It was determined that the gland was situated subcutaneously in between the caudal aspect of the lumbosacral bone and the first coccygeal vertebrae. The gland was composed of two lobes, which displayed an oval appearance when viewed from above and resembled a water drop when observed medially. Tuft of feathers were present on the caudal margin of each lobe. The present study revealed that the uropygial gland of the white stork is a simple tubular gland, which discharges its secretion into...

Proximal Femoral Epiphysis Anatomy in Chilean Population: Orthopedic and Forensic Aspects International Journal of Morphology
Osorio,Horacio; Schorwer,Karl; Coronado,César; Delgado,Javier; Aravena,Pedro.
From a biomechanical standpoint, bone geometry and density are factors correlated to the bone resistance of the femur when supporting body weight, with geometric parameters like the diameter of the femoral head and neck, the length of the femoral neck, and the femoral neck angle as determinant factors in the incidence of hip fractures, which increase in frequency and seriousness in osteoporotic patients. In Chile, morphometric data that contributes to relating the anatomy of the proximal epiphysis of the femur as an associated factor in hip fractures does not exist; likewise, there are no anthropometric indexes that may contribute to the forensic sciences. The purpose of this study is to establish average measurements of the proximal epiphysis of the femur...

Jerbi,Hassen; Khaldi,Sana; Pérez,William.
In camels, the rostral epidural rete mirabile had a spongy appearance, and consisted of a dense network of anastomosing arteries occupying the entire cavity of the cavernous sinus. In this study, we measured the length of each rostral epidural rete mirabile lobe, taken between the rostral and the caudal roots dissected in situ before spreading and after reconstitution, and the total length of the rostral epidural rete mirabile after linear reconstitution. The length of the left lobe of the rete was 6.0±0.4 mm and the length of the right lobe was 5.8 ± 0.5 mm. The combined length of the RERM after separation of the arteries was 305.2±9.7 cm. To conclude, we added information to literature in relation to morphometry of the camel RERM and showed this...

Anatomy of the Thoracic Wall, Axilla and Breast International Journal of Morphology
Macéa,José Rafael; Fregnani,José Humberto Tavares Guerreiro.
For adequate treatment of patients with breast cancer, mastologists should have a complete understanding of the anatomy of the thoracic wall, axilla and breast. However, the classical anatomical descriptions in textbooks make it difficult to gain full mastery of this subject, because the books usually deal with its elements separately. In an endeavor to resolve this difficulty, the present authors have conducted an extensive review, to describe the muscles, blood vessels and nerves of the thoracic wall and in the axilla that are of interest to mastologists. The axilla was described in detail, with emphasis on its limits, walls and contents, and highlighting the lymph nodes in this region. Finally, the anatomy of the breast and its topography, innervation,...

The Localization of the Asterion According to the Anatomical Landmarks of Posterior Cranial Fossa in Newborns: Clinical Implications International Journal of Morphology
Demir,Mehmet T; Kopuz,Cem; Pirzirenli,Mennan Ece Aydin; Çelik,Fahrettin; Çorumlu,Ufuk.
The purpose of this study was to determine the localization of the asterion according to the anatomical landmarks of posterior cranial fossa and its relation with sinuses for posterolateral surgical approaches in newborns. On 70 head-halves, a needle about 2 mm with diameter was placed on the centre point of asterion (posterolateral fontanel) by inserting into the whole cranial bony tissue by forming an right angle with the bony surface. Various localizations of asterion and its measurements from the internal and external anatomical landmarks were investigated on term neonatal cadavers. The localization of asterion was found as on the sigmoid-transverse sinus junction (STJ) (5., 6., 7., 8. squares) in 40% of cases on right side and in 34%, on left side....

To determine viable anatomical landmarks allowing for accurate femoral and tibial tunnel placement in anatomical position during posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) reconstruction. Ten knees were dissected to analyze femoral and tibial PCL insertion measurements and the features specific to the PCL and its fascicles. The clock hands system was used to measure femoral insertions. The meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) were used as landmarks to measure tibial insertions. The PCL and its corresponding fascicle characteristics were determined by its femoral insertion, central portion and tibial insertion. The mean lengths between the central point of the PCL footprint and the articular cartilage border at 12:00 h were 17.23 mm (±3.94) and 17.73 mm...

Unilateral Pectoralis Minimus Muscle: A Case Report International Journal of Morphology
Rai,Rajalakshmi; Ranade,Anu V; Prabhu,Latha V; Prakash,; Rajanigandha,V; Nayak,Soubhagya R.
Presence of additional muscles in the pectoral region has often been reported. We report about the presence of Pectoralis Minimus muscle, in a male cadaver. It was present deep to the pectoralis major muscle and superomedial to the pectoralis minor muscle. The variant was closely related to the branches of thoracoacromial vessels where one of the branches was passing between the pectoralis minor muscle and the variant muscle. Hyperabduction of the arm may compress these vessels giving rise to certain vascular symptoms. Also these variations should be borne in mind during certain surgical procedures in the pectoral region.

Scope of Anatomy Teaching in Problem-based Learning (PBL) Sessions of Integrated Medical Curriculum International Journal of Morphology
Potu,Bhagath Kumar; Shwe,Wuna Hla; Jagadeesan,Saravanan; Aung,Thidar; Cheng,Peh Suat.
Problem based learning (PBL) made a great impact on the methodology of teaching. The major advantage of PBL method of teaching is integration of basic and clinical sciences in an integrated curriculum. This is achieved by presenting clinical problems to students which contain learning objectives from subjects related to the given clinical problems. In recent reports deficiencies have been reported regarding quantity of anatomy content of the clinical problems which has resulted in difficulty in understanding of theanatomy. We have made an attempt to quantify the content of anatomy and its sub-disciplines in PBL curriculum by a case study method using 'documentary analysis' at School of Medicine and Health Sciences, UCSI University, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia....

ANDREAE VESALII: THE BONES AND MUSCLES International Journal of Morphology
Ayres de Vasconcellos,Henrique; Barros de Vasconcellos,Pedro Henrique.
The historical references are taken from Aristoteles (384-322 a C) considered the father of Kinesiology, and Claudius Galenus from Pergamon (131-201), the first team doctor. Both men´s studies shared the same objective: functional-anatomic aspects related to the Locomotive System. Although there were several descriptive anatomic studies of bones and muscles, it was Andreas Vesalius (1514-1564), whom most significantly contributed to the development of a new methodology for the lectures of Anatomy, with the setting up of skeletons and dissection of bodies during his lessons. Objectives: the aim of this paper is study the description of bones and muscles from the Vesalius works. We search Vesalius´s publications, specially "De Humani...

Anatomical Basis of the Myofascial Trigger Points of the Trapezius Muscle International Journal of Morphology
Akamatsu,Flávia Emi; Saleh,Samir; Pinesi,Henrique Trombini; Rodrigues,Katarina Reichmann; Zandoná,Cintia Benedicto; Andrade,Mauro; Jacomo,Alfredo Luiz.
This study aimed to bring the trapezius muscle, knowledge of the locations where the accessory nerve branches enter the muscle belly to reach the motor endplates and find myofascial trigger points (MTPs). Although anatomoclinical correlations represent a major feature of MTP, no previous reports describing the distribution of the accessory nerve branches and their anatomical relationship with MTP are found in the literature. Both trapezius muscles from twelve adult cadavers were carefully dissected by the authors (anatomy professors and medical graduate students) to observe the exact point where the branches of the spinal accessory nerve entered the muscle belly. Dissection was performed through stratigraphic layers to preserve the motor innervation of the...

The Acromion and its Different Forms International Journal of Morphology
Collipal,E; Silva,H; Ortega,L; Espinoza,E; Martínez,C.
The morphology of the acromion, its relation to the coracoid process and the supraglenoid tubercle is important in the determination of the dimension of the subacromial space, considering that the variations of these structures can promote pathologies such as impingement syndrome of the subacromial space. There is little information on the different dimensions and forms of the acromion. We studied in 36 scapulae at the museum of the Anatomy Unit, Universidad de La Frontera, the following parameters: length, denseness, width, anterior projection, distance acromiocoracoid and acromion supraglenoid. According to this form, the type was qualified in acromion type I (plane) type II (curved) and type III (hooked). The averages of the variable length, anterior...
