ABSTRACT Mexican plum (Spondias purpurea L.) ‘Cuernavaqueña’ was harvested at four ripening stages, with the aim of evaluating the concentration of bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity in the pulp and the epicarp. The highest ethylene production (9.43 mL kg h-1) and total soluble solids concentration (23.9 °Brix) was observed in the fully ripe stage. Titratable acidity was higher in green stage compared to other analyzed ripening stages in both pulp (0.48 %) and epicarp (0.32 %). Fully ripe plum epicarp presented the highest content of total phenols (GAE 190 mg g-1), flavonoids (QE 214 mg g-1), and carotenoids (853 mg g-1) compared to other ripening stages. Abstract In Brazil there are still few studies on the post-harvest quality of low-chill blueberry cultivars, which have been recently introduced in the country. ‘Snowchaser’ blueberries were evaluated during a six-day storage period regarding fruit physical and chemical properties, and its antioxidant capacity. During fruit storage there was an increased weight loss and maintenance of some skin color properties such as luminosity (L*) and b*, whereas the values of parameter a* decreased and chroma (C) values increased. Abstract The changes in concentration of vitamin C, enzymatic and antioxidant activity during the ripening of two soursop selections (G1 and G2) at room temperature (22 ºC) and refrigeration (15 ºC) with an HR 85% were evaluated. The content of soluble protein, the activity of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), the concentration of vitamin C, as well as the antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and FRAP methods. The initial soluble protein concentration of the G1 and G2 selections diminished at 22 and 15 °C during ripening. Fruits stored at 22 °C showed the highest CAT activity. ABSTRACT Healthy eating is associated with the consumption of fruits, which are notable for their beneficial effects on human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the proximate composition, composition of fibers and components with antioxidant activity in soursops varieties Crioula, Lisa and Morada of physiological maturity (PM) and mature (M). The protein, lipid and moisture contents did not differ between soursop varieties, but the ash contents were higher in the Morada-PM (0.56%±0.03) and the Morada-M (0.82%±0.10) varieties. ABSTRACT Jabuticaba and jussara are both fruits from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest and endangered plant species due to their unsustainable exploitation. In order to protect these plants, it is important to develop products made with these fruits. We have developed a ready-to-drink jabuticaba nectar with the addition of lyophilized jussara pulp (LJP) applying sensory tests, such as acceptance test and Check-All-That-Apply (CATA). Optimal sensory conditions ranged between 150 g L-1 and 200 g L-1 for sucrose concentration and between 450 mL L-1 and 550 mL L-1 for jabuticaba pulp concentration. Summary Bangladesh is an Asian country where only 20 per cent of the people are provided with modern healthcare services while the rest 80 per cent are dependent on traditional plant-based systems. Moreover, it is estimated that only 500 medicinal plant species had been recorded in Bangladesh out of 1,900 species regarded as having medicinal value. Purpose: Sixteen collections of medicinal plants of different families were extracted with several solvents (Ethanol 95%, water, chloroform, ethyl ether). On account of studying the feasibility of the production instant cereal beverage powders admixed with mulberry leaves by extrusion process, a box-behnken design of the response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the interaction of operating conditions at varying screw speed (300, 350 and 400 rpm), mulberry content (5, 10 and 15%) and feed moisture (15, 17 and 19%) on the physical and antioxidant property of product. The objective of this study was to determine proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins content and their antioxidant activity from four pigmented rice: Black glutinous, Homnin, Man-Pu, Sangyod by extract with 6 different solvents: DI water, 1%HCl-DI water, Ethanol, 1%HCl-Ethanol, Acetone, 1%HCl-Acetone. The results showed that the proanthocyanidin and anthocyanin contents were different between rice phenotypes and polarity of solvents (p<0.05). Rice contains several kinds of bio-functional components. In this study, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and Tocopherol, or Vitamin E were identified and their relationships to antioxidant activity using DPPH assay of both brown and pre germinated Thai rice varieties were studied. Abstract The objective of this work was to identify and evaluate the bioactive compounds, as well as the antioxidant potential, present in mature fruits of cambuizeiro (Myrcia multiflora) from the Chapada do Araripe, Brazil. In the fruits were evaluated: vitamin C, total anthocyanins, yellow flavonoids, total polyphenols, total antioxidant activity by the FRAP, DPPH and ABTS methods, and the antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activity. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effect of three different extracts prepared from Syzygium cumini leaves against paraquat-induced toxicity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains deficient in superoxide dismutase (SOD). Additionally, the extracts phenolic and flavonoid contents, in vitro antioxidant activity, and phytochemical composition (using high-pressure liquid chromatography) were determined. The present work used Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models to correlate beetroot extraction conditions with total phenolic compounds (TPC), anthocyanins (ANT) and antioxidant activity (AOA). The input variables were extraction time, type of solvent, solvent volume/sample mass (VMR) and order of extraction. The ANN models produced showed very good accuracy (R > 94 %), being suitable for data mining using weight analysis techniques. Abstract The production of non-native wine grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) in Zacatecas, Mexico has increased in recent years; however, information about their chemical composition is not yet available. Polyphenols are associated with the antioxidant capacity of grapes due to their beneficial health effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the total phenolic content (TPC) and the antioxidant capacity (AC) of non-native wine grapes grown in Zacatecas, México. Stingless bees in Brazil are indigenous and found all over the country. Bee pollen is used for its nutritional value in the human diet. It is made up of natural flower pollen mixed with nectar and bee secretions. In order to evaluate the chemical composition, free radical scavenging activity, and botanical origin, sample of pollen loads from stingless bee, Melipona rufiventris (Uruçu amarela) was studied. The EtOAc extract of pollen of Melipona rufiventris yielded the following compounds: p-hydroxycinnamic acid, dihydroquercetin, isorhamnetin, isorhamnetin3-O-(6"-O-E-p-coumaroyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside, luteolin, and quercetin. Abstract: In this study, the antimicrobial, antioxidant and antitumor activity of ethanol extracts obtained from Phlomis russeliana (Sims.) Lag. ex Benth. (Lamiaceae) were evaluated.
