Use of roof as roost of Eumops perotis (Molossidae: Chiroptera) in southeast Brazil Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

ABSTRACT The bat Eumops perotis (Schinz, 1821) is broadly distributed in the Americas. Studies on its biology are still scarce and the few studies available are relatively outdated. In the present study, we describe the biology of Eumops perotis in an artificial roost in the municipality of Pindorama, State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, which was monitored for 12 months. We captured 50 individuals; 43 adults (34 males and 9 females) and seven juveniles (three males and four females). The present study intended to analyze calliphorid attraction to traps painted in a variety of colors and the calliphorid constancy index in the Tingua Biological Reserve, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. The Diptera were collected monthly in the Reserve, between 2002 and 2005, totaling 24 samplings. Four traps containing sardines as bait were painted olive green, blood red, black, or white and exposed for 48 h at four equidistant points, 50 m from each other. Oviposition preference hierarchy in Ceratitis capitata (Diptera, Tephritidae): influence of female age and experience Iheringia, Sér. Zool.

The influence of two factors, age and previous experience, on the oviposition hierarchy preference of Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann, 1824) females was studied. Two populations were analyzed: one reared in laboratory during 17 years and the other captured in nature. In the first experiment the oviposition preference for four fruits, papaya, orange, banana and apple was tested at the beginning of oviposition period and 20 days past. Fourteen bird species were observed visiting one specimen of Alchornea glandulosa Poepp., 1845, at the Horto Florestal Navarro de Andrade, Rio Claro, São Paulo State, Brazil. Among them, three species seem to be the most efficient seed dispersers of A. glandulosa at the study site: Myiodinastes maculatus (Müller, 1776), Empidonomus varius (Vieillot, 1818) e Tyrannus melancholicus Vieillot, 1819. Besides to swallow fruit whole, these birds contributed with 68.5% of the total feeding visits. Boiruna maculata Boulenger, 1896 and Clelia rustica (Cope, 1878) were observed in captivity feeding snakes and rodents, respectively. Both species have shown a similar procedure in relation to the prey. Major behavior differences among the two species were: rodents killed before being swallowed, and snakes were mostly swallowed alive; both species are able to find the rodents head faster than the snake one; the coils formed during constriction were also used to hold the prey, specially the last coil, while swallowing rodents. Blooms of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium spp., known as producers of paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), are regularly detected on the French coastline. PSTs accumulate into harvested shellfish species, such as the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, and can cause strong disorders to consumers at high doses. Foraging behavior and at-sea distribution of White-Tailed Tropicbirds in tropical ocean ArchiMer

We used miniaturized GPS loggers and site observations to access foraging patterns and nest behaviour of the White-tailed Tropicbird Phaethon lepturus (WTTB), an endangered species at its South Atlantic breeding colony. Dual foraging pattern was observed with alternation between long and short foraging trips. Birds responsible for nest attendance engaged in short foraging trips with mean distance from colony of 25 +/- 17 km, total distance covered of 79 +/- 65 km and mean duration of 4.02 +/- 5.28 hours. Avoidance threshold to oil water soluble fraction by a juvenile marine teleost fish ArchiMer

When oil spills occur, behavior is the first line of defense for a fish to avoid being contaminated. Here, we determined the avoidance threshold of the European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) to the water-soluble fraction (WSF) of oil using a dual flow choice box. Our experiment revealed that a plume of 20%-diluted WSF (total PAH concentration: 8.54 μg L-1) triggered a significant avoidance response that was detected within 7.5 minutes of introducing WSF-contaminated water in the experimental set-up. However, the ecological relevance of seabass capacity to detect and avoid WSF remains to be established.
