Structural Modification of the Black Bengal Buck (Capra hircus) Acrosome During Post-testicular Maturation of Spermatozoa International Journal of Morphology
Datta,Uttam; Bandopadhyay,Soumendra Kumar; Hembram,Manik Lal.
The present study was conducted to measure various biometric parameters of intact/normal acrosomes (AC) collected respectively from caput, corpus and cauda epididymis and vas deferens of Black Bengal buck. Giemsa stained acrosomes were measured after camera lucida drawings. Observations revealed dimensional characters of the acrosomal cap diminished gradually and significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) during spermatozoa maturation phases in the different regions of the excurrent duct. Shape and size of the AC were also found to be influenced significantly (p<0.01, p<0.05) by the age and body weight of the animals. The structural modification along with decrease in the morphology of the AC reflected one of the maturational indexes of the male gametes in...

Biometry of Hard Palate on Digital Photographs: A Methodology for Quantitative Measurements International Journal of Morphology
Saviolo Moreira,Rafael; Alexandre Sgrott,Emerson; Seiji,Fernando; Luiz Smith,Ricardo.
The objective of this paper is to establish, validate and test the reproducibility and accuracy of a digital method to measure linear and angular distances in human hard palate of dry skulls. Digital photographs were made in 10 human adult skulls and measurements were made with the aid of AutoCAD software and with a digital caliper in the same skulls by one observer in a blind fashion to compare both methods. To validate the digital method, measurements was made in 20 skulls by 3 observers. The differences of the measurements were not statistically significant between both method and between the 3 observers. The use of digital cameras followed by image analysis with AutoCAD, a software initially developed for engineering and architecture, revealed to be an...

On the occurrence and identity of triploids of Rana kl. esculenta Linnaeus and R. lessonae Camerano in The Netherlands (Anura: Ranidae) Naturalis
Blommers-Schlösser, Rose M.A..
According to electrophoresis and erythrocyte size the genotypes of 756 waterfrogs, collected during 1986—1988 in 54 localities in The Netherlands, were classified as belonging to 5 different genotypes: 331 diploid R. lessonae (LL), 5 triploid R. lessonae (LLL), 250 diploid R. kl. esculenta (LR), 133 triploid R. kl. esculenta (LLR), and 37 diploid R. ridibunda (RR). The occurrence of triploid R. kl. esculenta in The Netherlands is reported for the first time and triploid R. lessonae has not yet been reported previously. There are indications that LL gametes could be produced by LLR triploids and LL diploids. R. kl. esculenta in R. kl. esculenta and R. ridibunda — R. kl. esculenta populations of the western regions seems to be exclusively triploid, whereas...

Non-Destructive Model to Predict Commelina diffusa Leaf Area Planta Daninha
CARVALHO,L.B.; ALVES,E.A.; BIANCO,S..
ABSTRACT: Leaf length (L), leaf width (W), and leaf area (LA) were measured from 100 leaves aiming to determine a simple linear equation (Y=a*X) to predict the leaf area of Commelina diffusa, an important weed infesting annual and perennial crops in Brazil and worldwide. Results indicate the equation LA=0.7*LW reliably estimates the leaf area of C. diffusa, after correlating LA with LW, and then validating that equation by analyzing four new 25-leaf samples.

Total leaf area of papaya trees estimated by a nondestructive method Scientia Agricola
Posse,Robson Prucoli; Sousa,Elias Fernandes de; Bernardo,Salassier; Pereira,Messias Gonzaga; Gottardo,Romildo Domingos.
Leaf area estimation is an important feature in physiological research involving predominantly photosynthesis, transpiration and growth. This study was carried out to develop a practical and nondestructive empirical mathematical model to estimate the area of one leaf and the total leaf area for papaya trees (Carica papaya L.). Two irrigated commercial orchards were evaluated over a period of 50 to 550 days after transplanting, during which the length of the leaf midrib (LM) varied from 0.04 to 0.60 m. A mathematical model was developed to estimate the area of one leaf for the papaya tree, taking into account LM and the age of the plant measured in days after transplanting. The model was considered satisfactory. Based on the average length of the last two...

Do the structures of macaw palm fruit protect seeds in a fire-prone environment? Acta Botanica
Bicalho,Elisa Monteze; Rosa,Bruno Luan; Souza,Anna Elisa de; Rios,Camilla Oliveira; Pereira,Eduardo Gusmão.
ABSTRACT Fire is an abiotic disturbance that regulates vegetation structure and biodiversity. Some plant species have adapted to fire prone environments by evolving protective structures. Acrocomia aculeata (macaw palm) is widely distributed throughout tropical America, and is found in environments continuously influenced by anthropogenic fire. We aimed to determine whether the fruit characteristics of A. aculeata enable seeds to resist the effects of fire and also the consequent effects of fire on fruit biometric traits and embryo viability. After a fire event in a region of pasture-forest transition, we marked 30 individuals of A. aculeata. The trees were separated by UPGMA analysis into 5 groups according to fire exposure, ranging from trees with no...
