Las tierras indígenas son claves para la conservación de la biodiversidad a la escala de paisajes en Suramérica. Los habitantes indígenas tratan de integrar la conservación con el desarrollo sostenible y la tradición con nuevas necesidades económicas. La cacería es una actividad económica y de subsistencia importante. La investigación participativa en la tierra comunitaria de Isoso incluye el auto-monitoreo de la cacería y de huellas en parcelas con el fin de evaluar la sostenibilidad del uso de tapir y de pecarí tropero. El modelo de cosecha unificado es el modelo teórico más completo, integrando modelos de cacería y de vulnerabilidad que incorporan la productividad biológica y tasas de cacería. We report four opportunistic field observations of a species of Abrocoma in Polylepis besseri woodlands in Cochabamba Department, Bolivia. These observations suggest four significant aspects of Abrocoma sp. natural history: 1) they have arboreal activity, 2) they may be specialized herbivores that feed on Polylepis leaves, 3) they have diurnal activity, and 4) they have docile behavior. These observations represent the first descriptions of aspects of the behavior and ecology of an abrocomid in Bolivia, and also suggest that Polylepis woodlands, a threatened Andean habitat, may provide an important habitat for specialized mammal herbivores such as Abrocoma sp. |

The Pantanal cat, Leopardus colocolo braccatus, has been reported for grasslands and subtropical humid forests in Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay and Argentina. Here we report a dead Pantanal cat in the Moxos savannahs of the Beni Department of Bolivia, representing the first record of this taxon for Bolivia. This record, in combination with a reassessment of two previous records of L. colocolo in the lowlands of Bolivia, extends the distribution range of this subspecies ca.1000 km WNW from the nearest known locality in Brazil. |

A large amount of unidentified material of the Neotropical genus Guatteria (Annonaceae) is lying on herbarium shelves around the world. Here twelve species are described in an attempt to reduce this amount of unidentified material. Next to this, previously unidentified material is now assigned to G. asplundiana, G. microcarpa, G. pastazae, and G. scalarinervia, four previously described but poorly known species, thus providing a clearer circumscription of these species. Soil moisture has high spatial and temporal variability, depending on topography, soil texture, vegetation and meteorological conditions. It influences many processes in the soil and supplies water to the vegetation. This is often a limiting factor in agricultural production. Over an 18-month period, we measured soil moisture dynamics down to a depth of 70 cm in a long-term trial in Bolivia comprising six different land-use systems, i.e. cocoa monocultures and agroforestry systems, both under organic and conventional management, successional cocoa agroforestry systems and a natural fallow. Migration from the Bolivian Altiplano to the Amazonian lowlands poses a number of challenges related to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Alto Beni, located in the Bolivian Yungas at the interface between two altitudinal zones, is a critical area in this respect. Unsustainable land use practices are leading to soil erosion, shallow landslides, as well as forest and biodiversity loss. Settlers from the Altiplano see themselves confronted with an ecosystem that does not support the agricultural systems they were once used to. To meet this demand, the cultivated area has been expanded in tropical forest areas and production has intensified by replacing traditional agroforestry systems with monocultures. Cocoa based small scale agriculture is the basic livelihood of most farming families in the region of Alto Beni in the Bolivian Andes. Cocoa cultivation is affected by climate change impacts, soil degradation, pests and plant diseases, and insecure cocoa prices. From a sustainable development point of view, cocoa farms need thus to become more resilient.
