Distribution and Quantification of Lymphocytes in the Major Lymphoid Organs of Naturally Gumboro Infected Broilers International Journal of Morphology
Uddin,Mohammad Mejbah; Islam,Mohammad Saiful; Basu,Joyita; Khan,Md. Zahirul Islam.
Gumboro disease is caused by the infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) which rapidly destroys immature B-lymphocytes of bursa of Fabricious, and causes immune suppression and high mortality in commercial broiler farms in Bangladesh. To investigate the possible effect of IBDV on lymphocytes and its distribution in the major lymphoid organs, bursa of Fabricious including spleen and thymus of naturally Gumboro-infected broilers, a research was conducted in the Department of Anatomy and Histology, collaboration with the Department of Pathology, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Bangladesh. Bursa of Fabricious, spleen and thymus of 21-days-old Gumboro-infected and non-infected broilers of same age (control) were routinely processed and stained by hematoxylin...

Performance of chicks subjected to thermal challenge PAB
Ferraz,Patrícia Ferreira Ponciano; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Lima,Renato Ribeiro de; Ferraz,Gabriel Araújo e Silva; Xin,Hongwei.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of thermal challenge at different intensities and durations on the production responses of 3 to 21-day-old broiler chickens. Two hundred and ten Cobb chicks were subjected to dry-bulb temperatures (tdb) of 27, 30, 33, or 36°C for the duration of 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4 days from the second day of life onwards. The experiment was carried out in four identical environmentally-controlled wind tunnels. Data on body mass (BM), feed intake (FI), and water intake (WI), all in grams, were monitored daily; and body weight gain (BWG), in grams, and feed conversion (FC) were also calculated. The effect of duration was not statistically significant. Empirical models were adjusted to relate BM, FI, and WI with...

Ferraz,Patricia Ferreira Ponciano; Yanagi Junior,Tadayuki; Hernández Julio,Yamid Fabián; Castro,Jaqueline de Oliveira; Gates,Richard Stephen; Reis,Gregory Murad; Campos,Alessandro Torres.
The objective of this work was to develop, validate, and compare 190 artificial intelligence-based models for predicting the body mass of chicks from 2 to 21 days of age subjected to different duration and intensities of thermal challenge. The experiment was conducted inside four climate-controlled wind tunnels using 210 chicks. A database containing 840 datasets (from 2 to 21-day-old chicks) - with the variables dry-bulb air temperature, duration of thermal stress (days), chick age (days), and the daily body mass of chicks - was used for network training, validation, and tests of models based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) and neuro-fuzzy networks (NFNs). The ANNs were most accurate in predicting the body mass of chicks from 2 to 21 days of age...

CONSUMER INTENTIONS OF BUYING POULTRY MEAT UNDER PERCEIVED BIOLOGICAL, CHEMICAL OR TECHNOLOGICAL RISK IN FINLAND AgEcon
Heikkila, Jaakko; Pouta, Eija; Forsman-Hugg, Sari; Makela, Johanna.
The study focuses on various types of food safety risks: biological (zoonoses), chemical (chemical treatment of the meat) and technological (use of genetically modified feed). The emphasis was on how the perceived risks affect the purchase intentions in the case of broiler meat. In the case of each risk products the attitude-level variables had importance in explaining the buying intentions. The heterogeneity of the respondents regarding the purchase intentions of risk products was analysed by latent class logistic regression that included all three risk products. About 60% of the respondents belonged to the group of risk avoiders in which the purchase intention of risk food was significantly lower than in the second group of risk neutrals in which 64% of...

THE OPERATION OF THE HUNGARIAN BROILER PRODUCT CHAIN AgEcon
Szollosi, Laszlo.
The general objective of this paper is to present the inner connections of the broiler product chain and the process of value generation in the economic situation of 2007. I introduce the input-output model of the broiler product chain adapted from macro-economic analysis, in which I calculated the direct connections of the product chain phases and between the national economic branches outside the chain. Then I point to the disproportion of the product chain through the profit distribution. Moreover, to evaluate the process of the value generation I demonstrate the value added generated along the value chain (year 2007). On the basis of the results 825 EUR of value added is realized to one ton of ready product (chicken meat), from which the major portion...

Costs and Benefits of Two Alternative Salmonella Control Policies in Finnish Broiler Production AgEcon
Kangas, Susanna; Lyytikainen, Tapani; Peltola, Jukka; Ranta, Jukka; Maijala, Riitta.
In this study, costs and benefits of two Salmonella control options in broiler production were compared. The first option was to control Salmonella as set by Council Directive 92/117/EEC, so-called Zoonosis Directive. The second option was more intense control programme, the so-called Finnish Salmonella control programme. The costs of controlling Salmonella in primary and secondary production and the direct and indirect losses due to Salmonella infection in humans in both options were compared. The national control option was found to be economically feasible. One prevented loss of life covered all the control costs of the national programme.

USE OF POULTRY LITTER AND OTHER BIOMASS IN ELECTRICITY PRODUCTION AND ITS IMPLICATION FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AgEcon
Paudel, Krishna P.; Bhattarai, Keshav; Bhandari, Doleswar.
Poultry litter is a byproduct of poultry production which has potential to cause water quality problem if it is not applied properly on land as a nutrient source. Using survey information available from Louisiana broiler producers, we found that broiler litter is not cost‐effective to transport farther than 24 miles from the production facilities given the crops grown in the region and other prevailing cost parameters. Alternative to broiler litter use on land as crop nutrients is its use as electricity production through combustion. We found that biomass‐electricity conversion is cost prohibitive if three small plant operations are established. It can be profitable if one large size plant of 10.5 MW is constructed, litter is available free, transportation...

CONSUMER WILLINGNESS-TO-PAY FOR FARM ANIMAL WELFARE IN GERMANY - THE CASE OF BROILER AgEcon
Makdisi, Fadi; Marggraf, Rainer.
Estimating the value consumers place on farm animal welfare (FAW) can predict the extent to which consumers are ready to support policy changes aimed at improving the welfare of farm animals and developing animal-friendly production systems that can also compete on markets. This study aimed at exploring consumer preferences and willingness-to-pay (WTP) for broiler meat in Germany which is certified as having been produced under a system that caters for FAW. In addition, logistic and linear regression models were estimated to examine the factors affecting consumers’ decision to buy certified FAW products. The data was obtained from a survey of 300 German broiler consumers, which was designed using the contingent valuation methodology. The results showed...

Sonoda,LT; Moura,DJ; Bueno,LGF; Cordeiro,DC; Mendes,AS.
Broiler litter reutilization consists in using the same bedding material to cover the house floor for several broiler flocks. This requires the litter to be treated in order to reduce the amount of microorganisms, according to international recommendations. The aim of this study was to evaluate two methods of broiler litter fermentation based on composting concepts and their effect on litter and the air quality during fermentation in small-scale broiler houses. The experiment was carried out in the Environmental Laboratory I of the School of Agricultural Engineering of the State University of Campinas, utilizing six small-scale houses. Litter from the same grow-out (one, two or three) was distributed in two experimental houses, where it was either piled or...

Comparing the profitability of organic and conventional broiler production Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Cobanoglu,F; Kucukyilmaz,K; Cinar,M; Bozkurt,M; Catli,AU; Bintas,E.
Recently, organic broiler chicken production has received more attention worldwide. This study has carried out an economic analysis to compare the profitability of organic versus conventional growing systems per unit of broiler meat production. To achieve this goal, 400 slow-growing broiler chickens (Hubbard Red-JA) were reared in an organic production system, and the same number of fast-growing birds (Ross-308) in a conventional system. The profitability was deduced with an economic analysis that compared total costs and net income. Results showed that organic broiler meat can cost from 70% to 86% more with respect to variable and fixed costs when compared with conventional production. The main reasons for the higher cost of organic broiler meat were...
