It is well known that an injection of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) or its analogue during the mid luteal phase of the estrous cycle induces a rapid decrease in plasma progesterone (P4) concentration, followed by luteolysis in the cow. There is evidence that a potent vasoactive peptide, endothelin-1 (ET-1), is produced in the bovine corpus luteum (CL), and that it is directly involved in luteolysis. We previously found that ET-1 concentrations in the peripheral plasma increase during the period of luteolysis and ovulation in cows. However, it is not clear whether the elevation of peripheral plasma ET-1 concentration observed during luteolysis and ovulation originates exclusively from the ovary and/or CL. Such a profile of plasma ET-1 concentration may be... |

Objectives were twofold: Determine key factors influencing preconditioning cost and returns; and determine the premium for age and source verified, preconditioned calves sold at a public livestock market. Data provided by the Samuel Roberts Noble Foundation show preconditioning returns depend significantly on number of days preconditioned, average daily gain, and cost of vaccinations, hay, feed, and mineral. Noble Foundation cooperators received a premium for age and source verified, preconditioned feeder cattle when sold at market. Significant coefficients averaged across five sales conclude that Noble Foundation management practices receive a $2.49/cwt premium when compared to all other cattle sold at market. |

An l8-day-old Jersey calf was admitted to the Veterinary Hospital of the School of Veterinary Medicine of the University of São Paulo. The owner reported that the calf, born without assistance, had been unable to get up since birth. Upon clinical exam, the animal was unable to walk when the stifle was maintained in marked flex ion. Lateral displacement of the patellae was detected upon palpation of the hind limbs. Radiographic exanimation confirmed the diagnosis of congenital bilateral luxation of the patellae. The results of femoral sulcoplasty, a surgical procedure used to deepen the patellar groove, were unsuccessful. Euthanasia was recommended. |

This study evaluated the ingestive behavior of Hostein calves kept in two husbandry systems: feedlot or pasture. We examined the ingestive behavior of 11 male non-castrated calves, with average initial age of 75 days, six of which were individually penned, consuming corn silage and concentrate-based diet at a ratio of 40:60 (on a DM basis), and the remainder, on pearl millet pasture (Pennisetum americanum) receiving concentrate supplementation at 1.0% body weight. Evaluations were held from November to February, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm. Feedlot calves stay longer (p < 0.05) in idle, both in lying and standing positions, while animals on pasture spent more time in eating and ruminating activities. Confined animals performed a higher number of daily... |

Abstract: The aims of this study were to investigate whether treatments with zinc edetate (Zn) and diphenyl diselenide ((PhSe)2) enhance performance, immune responses, protein metabolism, and oxidant/antioxidant status in calf serum and muscle. Animals were divided into four groups (n=6 each): control (without supplementation), and groups supplemented on days 50 and 70 of life with (PhSe)2, Zn, and a combination of (PhSe)2 and Zn. Animals treated with (PhSe)2 gained more weight by experimental day 220 than did the control group, but there was no difference by the end of the experiment (day 300). The absolute number of leukocytes and lymphocytes increased in groups Zn and (PhSe)2+Zn on day 20 of experiment, but decreased on day 40 in groups (PhSe)2, and... |

Abstract: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the use phytogenic as feed additive of Holstein calves could exert beneficial effects on animal health and performance. Thirty newborn calves were randomly divided into two groups (control and treated), and the treated consisted of 10 g of the phytogenic product diluted in milk once a day for 30 days. Blood and fecal samples were collected, and fecal score was performed daily in order to determine the occurrence of diarrhea. Treated calves showed higher hematocrit on days 45 and 60 of life. Serum levels of urea, total proteins, globulins and glucose were lower in the treated group on day 60 of life, while triglycerides were lower on days 15 and 60 of life. Serum glutathione S-transferase activity was... |

ABSTRACT This study aims at evaluating the effects of electrolytes, glucose and cortisol levels over heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) in healthy newborn calves. Seventeen healthy Holstein calves were evaluated during their first month of life, and the plasma concentrations of glucose, cortisol, calcium, magnesium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium and potassium were analyzed. HRV indexes were determined in the time and frequency domains through the analysis of neonatal electrocardiogram recordings. In the first day, low blood levels of phosphorus presented a strong correlation with the HR and the increased high-frequency components of HRV. The plasma concentrations of magnesium decreased significantly throughout the 35 days, revealing a positive... |

Three selective enrichment broths - selenite cystine (SC), Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate (MKT) and Rappaport-Vassiliadis (RV) - were compared, for Salmonella Typhimurium isolation from rectal swabs of a calf experimentally infected. The bacteriological procedure involved pre-enrichment in Hajna-GN broth (only for the samples inoculated in RV broth), selective enrichment (SC, MKT and RV broths), culture in modified brilliant green agar (BGA), presumptive biochemistry tests (using triple-sugar-iron agar and lysine-agar) and slide agglutination test with poli-O and poli-H Salmonella antisera. SC and MKT broths were more efficient in the isolation of Salmonella Typhimurium (12 positive samples), whereas RV broth had a lower efficiency in the microbiological... |

The efficiency of the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) combined with selective enrichment broth was compared with the standard microbiological techniques for detection of Salmonella Dublin in fecal samples of 10 to 15-days-old Holstein calves, experimentally infected with 10(8) CFU of Salmonella Dublin. Seventy-six fecal samples were analyzed using PCR associated with selenite cystine (SC) and Muller-Kauffmann tetrathionate (TMK) broths and standard microbiological techniques. Regardless of the selective enrichment broth used, the standard microbiological techniques were significantly better than PCR in detection of positive samples of Salmonella Dublin. However, the simultaneous use of both techniques provided detection of a larger number of positive... |

Two hundred and five Escherichia coli strains isolated from calves with diarrhea from mid-western Brazil were screened for the presence of virulence factors associated with bovine colibacillosis. One hundred and two (49.8%) of the E. coli strains produced toxins: Shiga toxins 1 (9.7%) and 2 (6.3%), a-hemolysin (9.7%), enterohemolysin(6.8%), Cytotoxic Necrotizing Factors type 1 (0.5%), and type 2 (4.4%), enterotoxins LT-II (8.3%) and STa (3.9%). No strain produced enterotoxin LT-I. Fimbrial adhesins F5 and F17 were produced by 7.3% and 4.8% of the strains, respectivly, and none expressed F41. Seven strains (3.4%) possessed the gene eae and belonged to serotypes O26:H-; O111:H- and O118:H16. These results suggest that calves in Brazil may be an important... |
