Chromosome loss in tetraploid families of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Mccombie, Helen; Lapegue, Sylvie; Cornette, Florence; Ledu, Christophe; Boudry, Pierre.
Alterations of chromosome number have been observed in the somatic tissue of Crassostrea gigas diploids and artificial polyploids bred in this species. Tetraploid animals with lower chromosome counts in some or all of their somatic tissue are considered undesirable as parents either for commercial triploids (produced via a cross with diploids) or for tetraploid breeding because (1) they may confer the tendency to lose chromosomes and revert to lower ploidy levels to their offspring or (2) their offspring could have a lower ploidy directly because of potential links between somatic and gametic chromosome loss. The present study evaluated the phenomenon in bi-parental tetraploid families bred from parents of differing ploidy quality, including a...

A "G" chromosome banding study of three cupped oyster species : Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea virginica (Mollusca : Bivalvia) ArchiMer
Leitao, Alexandra; Thiriot-quievreux, Catherine; Malheiro, Isabel; Boudry, Pierre.
The G-banding technique was performed on chromosomes from gill tissue of three cupped oyster species : Crassostrea gigas, Crassostrea angulata and Crassostrea virginica. Identification of the ten individual chromosome pairs was obtained. Comparative analysis of G-banded karyotypes of the three species showed that their banding patterns generally resembled each other, with chromosome pair 3 being similar in all three species. However, differences from one species to another were also observed. The G-banding pattern highlighted greater similarities between C. gigas and C. angulata than between these two species and C. virginica, thus providing an additional argument for genetic divergence between, these two evolutionary lineages. C. gigas and C. angulata...

Karyotype, heterochromatin distribution and meiosis of Zabrotes subfasciatus (Bohemann) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) Neotropical Entomology
Corrêa,Ronan X.; Pompolo,Sílvia G.; Santos,Igor S.; Silva,Janisete G.; Costa,Marco A..
Zabrotes subfasciatus (Boh.) has been extensively studied in its agronomic and biochemical aspects due to its importance as a damaging insect to leguminous grains during storage. The few cytogenetic studies published on this species yielded conflicting results. In this study, the karyotype was analyzed in order to accurately describe the chromosome C-banding patterns and meiosis. The brain ganglion at the prepupa and the adult and pupal testes were analyzed. All individuals had 26 chromosomes in both brain ganglion and spermatogonic mitotic metaphases. These chromosomes were classified as follows: the 12th pair and the Y chromosome were telocentric; the X chromosome was acrocentric; the 4th and 5th pairs were submetacentric; and the remaining pairs were...

Cytogenetics studies in thirteen Brazilian species of Phaneropterinae (Orthoptera: Tettigonioidea: Tettigoniidae): main evolutive trends based on their karyological traits Neotropical Entomology
Ferreira,Amilton; Mesa,Alejo.
The thirteen species of Phaneropterinae here studied can be arranged in four different groups according to their basic karyological traits. All of them share the same kind of chromosomal sex determining mechanism with X0(male) and XX(female). The X chromosome differs among species and always appears heteropycnotic during prophase I, it is the largest in the set and segregates precociously during anaphase I. Among the species, the karyotypes varies in fundamental number between 31 to 21. The meaning of these significant changes in the karyotypes in relation to the phylogeny within some large taxonomic group of species is discussed.

Conserved number of U2 snDNA sites in Piabina argentea, Piabarchus stramineus and two Bryconamericus species (Characidae, Stevardiinae) Neotropical Ichthyology
Piscor,Diovani; Fernandes,Carlos Alexandre; Parise-Maltempi,Patricia P..
ABSTRACT The chromosomal location of 5S rRNA and U2 snRNA genes of Piabina argentea, Piabarchus stramineus and two Bryconamericus species from two different Brazilian river basins were investigated, in order to contribute to the understanding of evolutionary characteristics of these repetitive DNAs in the subfamily Stevardiinae. The diploid chromosome number was 2n = 52 for Bryconamericus cf. iheringii, Bryconamericus turiuba, Piabarchus stramineus and Piabina argentea. The 5S rDNA clusters were located on one chromosome pair in P. stramineus and B. cf. iheringii, and on two pairs in B. turiuba and P. argentea. The U2 snDNA clusters were located on the one pair in all species. Two-color FISH experiments showed that the co-localization between 5S rDNA and...

Karyotype of the gall fly Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima) (Diptera, Tephritidae) Zoologia
Carneiro,Marco Antônio A.; Gomes,Luiz Fernando; Pompolo,Silvia das Graças; Campos,Lucio Antonio de Oliveira.
The objective of the present study is to describe the karyotype of the fruit fly Tomoplagia rudolphi (Lutz & Lima, 1918). This fly induces the formation of galls on the stems of Vernonia polianthes (Asteraceae). The cytogenetic analysis of cerebral ganglia (larva and pupa) and testis (adults) of T. rudolphi showed a diploid chromosome number of 2n = 10 + xx (female) and 2n = 10 + xy (male). The diploid chromosome number 2n = 12 and the XX/XY sex determination system have been found in most of the species studied. The present investigation constitutes the first cytogenetics study of the genus Tomoplagia Coquilltt, 1910.

The bush dog (Speothos venaticus) is a South American canid, included in the IBAMA (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources) official list of animals threatened with extinction, in the vulnerable category. As a preservation and conservation strategy, specimens kept in captivity by Brazilian Institutions are monitored by a management plan. In order to characterize and analyze the genetic variability of bush dog specimens, a cytogenetic analysis was carried out, and microsatellite data were also obtained through the use of 15 primers, originally developed for the domestic dog (Canis familiaris). All tested primers showed transferability and amplified fragment sizes similar to those described for the canine genome. From the total...

Polytypic and polymorphic cytogenetic variations in the widespread anuran Physalaemus cuvieri (Anura, Leiuperidae) with emphasis on nucleolar organizing regions Biol. Res.
QUINDERÉ,YEDA R. S. D; LOURENÇO,LUCIANA B; ANDRADE,GILDA V; TOMATIS,CRISTIAN; BALDO,DIEGO; RECCO-PIMENTEL,SHIRLEI M.
We investigated the NOR distribution in ten populations of Physalaemus cuvieri from different regions of Brazil and Argentina. A high variability in NOR pattern was observed and provided a useful tool in grouping several populations. The specimens from the state of Tocantins, northern Brazil, could easily be distinguished from all the other analyzed populations, since its karyotype presented NORs in the chromosome pairs 1,3,4 and 10 (and sometimes also in chromosome 5), and several pericentromeric C-bands. A NOR-site in chromosome 9 characterized three populations from the northeastern region of Brazil. Interestingly, the P. cuvieri populations located in opposite extremes of the geographic distribution had, as a fixed condition, the presence of NORs in 8q...

Cytogenetic characterization of Aloysia virgata Ruiz and Pavan (Verbenaceae) BABT
Brandão,Aline Dias; Viccini,Lyderson Facio; Recco-Pimentel,Shirlei Maria.
Since previous cytogenetic reports of Aloysia have only described the meiotic behavior and chromosomal number of some species, the aim of this work was to provide detailed cytogenetic description of Aloysia virgata that would contribute to the understanding of the taxonomical organization of the Verbenaceae. Aloysia virgata had a karyotype with 2n = 36 metacentric chromosomes, all with similar size. The large amount of heterochromatin seen after Giemsa staining was confirmed by C-banding. Four nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were detected with an rDNA 45S probe in two homologous pairs and two sites of 5S rDNA located on one chromosomal pair were detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The interphase nucleus was classified as semi-reticulate....

Unexpected chromosomal alterations in Tayassu tajacu (Artiodactyla: Tayassuidae) in captivity Braz. J. Vet. Res. Anim. Sci.
Lima,José Fernando de Sousa; Guedes,Fátima Becker; Silva,Roxane Wirschum; Hass,Iris; Cavalli,Iglenir João; Silva,Juliana da; Freitas,Thales Renato de; Sbalqueiro,Ives José.
Wild animals have been used as bioindicators in situations in which the environment was exposed to chemical agents. In general, chemical agents may induce chromosomal aberrations, such as breaks and gaps. The peccary, Tayassu tajacu is a pig relative that exhibits a very stable karyotype with the only described alterations being of the form of the X chromosome. Chromosomal gaps and breaks were observed at high frequencies during cytogenetics analyses. These alterations were observed in the chromosomes autossomics. Reviews of the literature and of the data described herein suggests that an vermifuge, the ivermectin base, was the most likely cause of these chromosomal alterations.

Chromosome studies in some Stevia. Cav. (Compositae) species from Southern Brazil Braz. J. Genet.
Frederico,Adriana P.; Ruas,Paulo M.; Marin-Morales,Maria A.; Ruas,Claudete F.; Nakajima,Jimi N..
Karyotypes of six species of the genus Stevia from Southern Brazil were studied, utilizing root tip metaphases. All species were diploid with 2n = 22 chromosomes. It was possible to identify each species by chromosome morphology. The basic chromosome number for Brazilian species of Stevia is X = 11. This number is also found in almost all South American species. We suggest that in Stevia there is an evolutionary trend toward chromosomal rearrangement, caused mainly by pericentric inversions. It was found that, in addition to aneuploidy and polyploidy, chromosomal rearrangements are common in the tribe Eupatorieae.
