What is the Difference in Profit per Acre between Organic and Conventional Coffee? AgEcon
Jensen, Jennifer; Dicks, Michael R..
The research addresses the economic problem of deforestation. A contributing factor to deforestation is coffee production. Coffee is an indigenous plant that is naturally occurring in the native tropical forests. However, conventional coffee is grown on cleared forest soil. In the native forest there is the potential for additional fruits (bananas, mangoes, avocados) and wood products while in the conventional coffee production system the only product is coffee. Conventional coffee production often causes deforestation and soil erosion while the organic coffee production system does not. In addition, the price risk associated with the coffee monoculture is high and has proven disastrous to the sustainability of coffee production in past years. Thus,...

Seasoning a Monopsonic Processor for Collective Action amongst Pepper Producers in Costa Rica AgEcon
Saenz-Segura, Fernando J.F.; Schipper, Robert A.; D'Haese, Marijke F.C..
The small-scale pepper producers in the El Roble settlement Costa Rica face a monopsonistic market. Only one processing firm is buying the fresh pepper bunches. The processor has all bargaining power to decide on the price paid to the farmers and the quality selection criteria. The rejection rates are high, which is why farmers decided to market their pepper collectively. They started organizing the selection and transport of pepper and entered into group contracts with the firm. We use a non-linear integer simulation model to predict the price level and contractual form (individual or group contracts) which maximises the income of the firm and farmers under three conditions, namely, monopsony (firm holds all bargaining power), monopoly (producers hold all...

ALBERTA’S EXPORT EXPERIENCE UNDER FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS: 1988 - 2007 AgEcon
Mirus, Rolf; Tanerguclu, Hande.
The international involvement of Alberta-based businesses covers trade in goods, trade in services, and Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), both inward and outward. Increasingly FDI is linked to trade in goods and services. Indeed, the export of services like consulting or construction engineering tends to involve the setting up of supporting facilities abroad (outward FDI), and exports of goods frequently necessitate the provision of maintenance services in their wake, either across the border or through an office abroad. Data on outward FDI by Alberta-based firms are not available, nor are data on exports of services by province of origin. Therefore an analysis of what has been happening to Alberta’s international commercial relations is of necessity...

Can supply chain's coordination mechanisms include small holders? Insight from an empirical work in Costa Rica. AgEcon
Faure, Guy; D'Hotel, Elodie Maitre; le Coq, Jean-Francois; Saenz, Fernando.
Small holders' agriculture is currently facing new stakes due to State's withdrawal from agricultural support and to higher market requests for producing agricultural products. Different coordination mechanisms can be observed inside the supply chains involving farmers, farmers' organizations, and others stakeholders. They depend on the nature of the product, the characteristics of the stakeholders involved, the technical specifications related to the transactions, and the institutional environment. Relying on a comparative case study methodology, the paper analyzes the consequences of different coordination mechanisms on inclusion or exclusion of small farmers in the northern region of Costa Rica. Market coordination could be an efficient way to integrate...

Assessing the potential for synergy in the implementation of Payment for Environmental Services (PES) programs: an empirical analysis in Costa Rica AgEcon
Zhang, Wei; Pagiola, Stefano.
Payment for environmental services (PES) is a promising mechanism for conservation. It also has the potential to contribute to social objectives such as poverty reduction. To promote synergy in the implementation of PES, however, a number of conditions on spatial, economic, ecological, and institutional feasibilities are essential. This study discusses factors affecting the synergy prospect of PES and provides a simple framework for assessing the potential for synergy in the implementation of PES, focusing on spatial correlation of thematic areas and funding availability for payments. We apply the framework to an empirical analysis of the “water funding” in Costa Rica, a new conservation financing source generated by water tariff revenue and will be...

Offspring production in three freshwater crab species (Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from the Amazon region and Central America Rev. Bras. Zool.
Wehrtmann,Ingo S.; Magalhães,Célio; Hernáez,Patricio; Mantelatto,Fernando L..
Freshwater crabs are an important component of the fauna of limnic environments, and out of the two true freshwater crab families present in the Neotropics, Pseudothelphusidae is the most diverse. Considering the lack of information regarding reproductive features of neotropical freshwater crabs, we studied, for the first time, the fecundity and the presence of juveniles carried by females of two pseudothelphusids from the Amazon region - Kingsleya latifrons (Randall, 1840) and Kingsleya ytupora Magalhães, 1986 - and one from Central America - Potamocarcinus magnus (Rathbun, 1896). The two Kingsleya species produced relatively few (56-114) and large eggs (1.9-3.7 mm), typical for species with an abbreviated or direct development. Recently produced eggs...

Two new species of Costatrichia (Trichoptera: Hydroptilidae: Leucotrichiinae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Santos,Allan Paulo Moreira; Takiya,Daniela Maeda; Nessimian,Jorge Luiz.
Costatrichia Mosely, 1937 is a Neotropical genus included in the subfamily Leucotrichiinae. Previously, this genus included 14 described species, two from Brazil and eight from Costa Rica. Based on recent specimens collected with light traps in the Brazilian Amazon and Costa Rica, we describe two new species: Costatrichia ipixuna sp. nov. from the state of Amazonas, Brazil (C. lodora group) and C. falsa sp. nov. from Puntarenas, Costa Rica (C. simplex group). Costatrichia ipixuna sp. nov. is most similar to C. noite Angrisano, 1995, but can be distinguished by the shallower U-shaped incision on posterior margin of sternum VIII, by the absence of the lateral projection of the same segment bearing very long setae, and by the phallus with a pair of spine-like...

Phenological patterns and reproductive success of Ceiba pentandra (Bombacaceae) in tropical dry and wet forests of Costa Rica RChHN
ROJAS-SANDOVAL,JULISSA; LOBO,JORGE A; QUESADA,MAURICIO.
We studied the phenological patterns and the reproductive success of 103 Ceiba pentandra trees, located in the tropical dry and wet forests of the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. To determine the phenological patterns of this species we recorded leaf fall, flower and fruit production of marked trees every two-weeks from December through March over three years (2001, 2002 and 2003). We also recorded the flowering and fruiting frequencies for two more years (2000 and 2004). Our data suggest that phenological patterns of C. pentandra trees behave as irregular cycles rather than cycles fixed at supra-annual intervals, and the forest type in which the trees are located does not have a decisive effect on either the probability or the frequency of the reproductive...

Espécies de Parapsaenythia de Costa Rica descritas por Friese (Hymenoptera, Apoidea) Zoologia
Moure,Jesus S..
Friese (1916) described Parapsaenythia flavescens, changing the name to P. argentina. This species is a Colletidae, Paracolletini and belongs in Eulonchopria Brèthes, 1909, and a new combination Eulonchopria flavescens (Friese, 1916) is proposed. The second species apparently was not described: it is a Panurgini and here described as Friesina carinulata gen.n. and sp.n.. At Berlin Museum Psaenythia bernardinensis syn.n., decribed by Strand (1910), from Paraguay, is the male of' Eulonchropiaparaguayen-sis Brèthes, 1909, syn.n.

FIRST HOST RECORD FOR THE ROOT PARASITE Corynaea crassa (BALANOPHORACEAE) Acta biol.Colomb.
TUPAC OTERO,J; MORA,MARCELA; COSTA,JUAN F.
Corynaea crassa is a root hemiparasitc plant infrequent in nature. There is little information regarding their natural history, in particular their host range. In this study we dig 32 tubers and followed their parasitized roots to determine the species host. We found Bocconia frutescens (Papaveraceae), Verbesina sp. (Asteraceae), Cayaponia sp. (Cucurbitaceae) y Palicourea sp.(Rubiaceae) as natural hosts of C. crassa. This is the first host record available for C. crassa and provides some bases for its conservation in natural habitats.

A new species of Colosmittia Andersen et Sæther from Costa Rica (Chironomidae: Orthocladiinae) Biota Neotropica
Andersen,Trond; Mendes,Humberto Fonseca; Hagenlund,Linn Katrine.
Colosmittia anamariae sp. n. from Costa Rica is described and figured as male imago. The genus Colosmittia Andersen et Sæther, 1994 was described based on a single species, C. clavata Andersen et Sæther, 1994 from the West Usambara Mountains in Tanzania, East Africa. A second species, C. brasileira Mendes et Andersen, 2009 was recently described from Brazil. The discovery of a third species in Costa Rica indicates that the genus might be widespread in the Neotropical region.

Limb amputation by male Neotropical longhorn beetles during competition for females Biota Neotropica
Larsson,Folke Kustvall.
The biology and mating behaviour of the spectacularly large and brightly coloured Neotropical longhorn beetle Schwarzerion holochlorum Bates 1872 (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) is largely unknown. For the first time I report and photographically document violent male-male competitions for females involving frequent amputations of competitors' legs and antennae.

Identification of volatile compounds from three species of Cyathodium (Marchantiophyta: Cyathodiaceae) and Leiosporoceros dussii (Anthocerotophyta: Leiosporocerotaceae) from Panama, and C. foetidissimum from Costa Rica Boletín de la Sociedad
Salazar Allen,Noris; Santana,Ana Isabel; Gómez,Nélida; Chung C,Clementina; Prashad Gupta,Mahabir.
Cyathodium is a thalloid marchantialean liverwort with five species reported for the Neotropics. Three species that occur in Panama (C. bischlerianum, C. spruceanum, C. cavernarum) and one from Costa Rica (C. foetidissimum) were studied chemically. Female and male plants of the dioecious C. spruceanum were very similar in their chemical composition except for two compounds that were found only in female plants. All samples of C. spruceanum and C. bischlerianum contained, in less than three percent, the sesquiterpenes germacrene D and bicyclogermacrene. The presence of these compounds suggests a close affinity between these two species. Cyathodium bischlerianum contained mainly aromatic monoterpenes with nerolidol as the main compound. Cyathodium cavernarum...
