Levrel, Harold; Hay, Julien; Bas, Adeline; Gastineau, Pascal; Pioch, Sylvain.
The cost of ecosystem services degradation is a major topic as underlined by the TEEB program (The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity), which proposed an assessment of the costs of policy inaction in the field of biodiversity conservation. In the same vein, the report of the French Centre for Strategic Analysis on the Economic Approach to Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services turns its attention to the value of ecosystem services, suggesting some elements that could help measure the cost of biodiversity degradation. There is however some confusion regarding the notion of cost. Thus, in the case of TEEB the proposed cost assessment translates into monetary terms the loss of potential profits from ecological services. Yet, another way of assessing these...

Catanzano, Joseph; Lantz, Frederic; Vernier, C; Allard, M.o.
The artisanal fisheries industry has experienced a major development over the 80's: technology has improved and ship building costs have increased. The firms' economic behaviour and financial performances have shown that the marginal profitability of capital is lower for large units than for small units, the latter being used by coastal fisheries. Overall, conclusions on the financial situation of the industry must be qualified. Public intervention has materialized through (1) an increasing amount of state aids supporting modernization investment (Brittany being the most supported region), (2) more political and financial involvement of regions as a result of more administrative and decision making responsibilities being devolved to them, (3) the...

Sandwich panels with a facing of laminated fibre reinforced plastics are now established boatbuilding materials. In the last few years they have begun to replace the traditional metal and wood in ship and marine construction. Today's materials are usually selected on the basis of minimum cost and simplicity of construction. This is often contrary to the demands of the owner who wants an inexpensive, safe, easy-care and long-lasting ship. The requirements of boatbuilder and operator can easily be satisfied if the combination of the best choice of materials and new, rationalized construction methods are considered. Taking the construction of the boat "Sandwich" as an example we will demonstrate the increased importance of the tough rigid linear PVC foam core...

Paquotte, Philippe.
Aquaculture is an economic activity which is characterised by a great dependence on environmental conditions. Therefore, aquaculture development is subdued to institutional context which defines the rules for use and conservation of the environment. This paper analyses the impact of marine environment regulations on economic operating of aquaculture enterprises and on industrial dynamics. Because aquaculture enterprises use a collective good, an economic approach of aquaculture has to take into account not only the relations between enterprises and environment, but also the relations between the enterprises themselves, through production externalities. In this study, several economic tools are considered in order to incite enterprises to integrate part of...

Leborgne, Y.
SATMAR has developed techniques and methods allowing a production of over 100 million spat per year at a size from 2 to 10 millimetres. Among the 13 species concerned by this production, 3 of major importance are the oysters Crassostrea gigas, Ostrea edulis and the Japanese little neck clam, Ruditapes philippinarum . The hatchery production could easily be doubled if the market would increase. Current research tend to increase the quality of the products by means of genetics and to lower the costs by improving the nursery phase.

OceanDocs
Perrotta, R.G.; Tringali, L.S.; Izzo, A.; Boccanfuso, J.; López, F.; Macchi, G.J..
Movements pattern records of the Mar del Plata inshore fishing fleet during the 1997/98 and 1998/99 chub mackerel fishing seasons (October-January) allowed to observe that there is coincidence between the decrease of the 1983-1997 catches with respect to years previous to the 1975/76 "critical season" and a reduction of the inshore fleet fishing grounds which modifies accessibility of the fleet to the chub mackerel schools. Biostatistical and gonadal development results obtained in the Mar del Plata area (i.e., presence of adults during almost the whole fishing season which overlaps with the spawning season) do not differ significantly from those obtained during previous fishing seasons. As recommended in previous papers, chub mackerel fishing operations...

Yield Losses and Economic Threshold of GR® F2 Volunteer Corn in Bean Planta Daninha
PIASECKI,C.; RIZZARDI,M.A..
ABSTRACT: Volunteer corn has high competitive capacity with bean, and the degree of interference varies as a function of corn density and origin (individual plant or clump). This study aimed to quantify bean yield losses under interference with densities of individual plants and clumps (seven plants at the same point) of GR® F2 volunteer corn and calculate the economic threshold (ET). Two experiments were carried out in a randomized blocks design with three replicates in Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. The studied volunteer corn densities were 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12 individual plants and clumps m-2. The bean yield was assessed and calculated the yield losses (%) in response to volunteer corn interference. The yield loss data were fitted to the rectangular...

Extended generalized linear models: Simultaneous estimation of flexible link and variance functions AgEcon
Basu, Anirban.
I describe a command that simultaneously solves the extended estimating equations estimator for parameters in the link and variance functions along with those of the linear predictor in a generalized linear model. The method addresses difficulties in choosing the correct link and variance functions in these models. It decouples the scale of estimation for the mean model, determined by the link function, from the scale of interest for the scientifically relevant effects. It also estimates a flexible variance structure from the data, leading to efficient estimation.

AGRICULTURAL BIOTECHNOLOGY: FARM-LEVEL, MARKET, AND POLICY CONSIDERATIONS AgEcon
Van der Sluis, Evert; Diersen, Matthew A.; Dobbs, Thomas L..
This study provides an overview of the economic costs, benefits, and risks involved with agricultural biotechnology at the farm level, at the market level, and for the farm and food system as a whole. Both advantages and disadvantages of agricultural biotechnology are discussed. Among the drivers of U.S. domestic and international consumer demand for transgenic crop products discussed are environmental and food safety concerns. A comparison is made between a "science-based" regulatory framework and a policy based on the precautionary principle. The authors argue that open dialogue is needed for achieving improved public understanding of agricultural biotechnology, and that analyses need to go beyond discussing the scientific merits of biotechnology, to...

METHODS OF CALCULATING THE COSTS IN THE ROMANIAN MINING ENTERPRISES AgEcon
Trifoi, Ion Gigi; Dumbrava, Partenie.
Determining the cost-bearers takes place according to the physical form of the production and the requirements of the calculation method. In this sense, we could choose between the synthetic calculation methods using a single expense-bearer and analytical calculation methods implying the utilization of two or more expense-bearers and able to provide several necessary information for the economic-financial analysis of the enterprise in the purpose of fundamentinf economic decisions to be made by the operative leadership of the enterprise. As stated above, we can also mention the expenditure sectors that serve the analytical character of programming and of following the expenses related to the production capacity of the enterprise. At determining expenses...

PROCUREMENT RISKS AND STRATEGIES TO IMPROVE QUALITY CONSISTENCY IN WHEAT SHIPMENTS AgEcon
Wilson, William W.; Dahl, Bruce L..
Consistency of functional characteristics in wheat is a concern confronting buyers and sellers. This research analyzes the cost and risk of different procurement strategies for importers. A stochastic simulation model is used to determine the probability of a functional characteristic being satisfied subject to quality targets and costs for alternative purchase strategies (purchase by protein only, variety, location, variety by location, or functional tests). Joint probabilities of meeting specifications and costs were determined for the alternative purchase strategies. Stochastic dominance was used to determine which purchase strategies dominate others, and stochastic efficiency was utilized to determine the degree of preference. Results indicate...

PROFIT CONSISTENCY AND MANAGEMENT CHARACTERISTICS FOR SUCCESSFUL NORTH DAKOTA FARMS, 1995-2000 AgEcon
Taylor, Richard D.; Koo, Won W.; Swenson, Andrew L..
Farm profitability varies widely among producers, but the reasons for those differences are not clear as it is generally not known if the same farms are in the higher profit categories every year. Characteristics of the individual producer also vary substantially. Farm size, crop yields, cost of production, debt structure, and land ownership are some of the traits which differ among farms. This study analyzed farm finance data from the North Dakota Farm and Ranch Business Management Program over the years 1996-2000 to determine if the characteristics of profitable farms were different from the characteristics of farms which were not as profitable. A secondary objective was to evaluate if farms remained in similar profit quartiles every year.

Economics and politics of water resources development: Uda Walawe Irrigation Project, Sri Lanka AgEcon
Molle, Francois; Renwick, Mary E..
The Uda Walawe Irrigation and Resettlement Project (UWIRP) located in the Southern dry zone of Sri Lanka was initiated in the early 1950s. The original plan for the UWIRP was a highly ambitious social, economic and physical engineering project aimed at creating a modern, profitable agriculture sector. This report examines the history of water resources development and investment decisions for the UWIRP over a period of 50 years and uncovers underlying processes that shaped the evolution of the project and highlights the limitation of viewing development as a mere set of technical and social engineering endeavors.

A mezőgazdasági épületek és háztartások energiaköltségének csökkentése fontos a versenyképességben és a megélhetésben AgEcon
Herczeg, Rahel Sara; Suveges, Peter.

Method of Component Depreciation of Fixed Assetsts and Its Comparision with Traditional Methods AgEcon
Starova, M.; Cermakova, Helena.
This contribution analyzes, based on specific examples, accounting procedures and tax implications of depreciation of tangible fixed assets. It compares the component method, which has recently appeared in the Czech legal regulations, with the traditional methods. To compare the effects that the traditional methods have on profit or loss, or rather on the tax base, also the generation of provisions is used. The use of component depreciation is governed solely by the accounting regulations while the Income Tax Act has not been changed in this respect. Profit of loss has to be adjusted by a difference amount between accounting depreciation and tax depreciation in tax return.

AN ANALYSIS OF COSTS BY SIZE OF JAIL FOR SELECTED COUNTIES IN IOWA AgEcon
Edelman, Mark A.; Mayer, Adrian J..
Officials from eight counties selected according to jail size were interviewed. Parameters from site visits were used to estimate jail costs. The jails selected ranged in capacity from 5 to 41 prisoners. In addition, costs from the sample of local jails were compared to costs from studies of larger jails and state prisons. Jails with 5 to 41 bed capacity exhibited a U-shaped cost curve. Jail costs varied from a low of $35.20 per prisoner day for the 10 bed jail to $56.63 per prisoner day for the 40 bed jail. Therefore, costs vary by $21.43 per prisoner day for the sample of local jails examined in this study. The threshold economies of size achieved by smaller jails is due primarily to the shared staffing systems, a high degree of integration between...
