Many growers of organic strawberry and raspberry have large losses in yield and reduced quality of their products because of insect damage. For many insects species pheromones and host plant volatiles are of major importance in mate finding and host plant location. In this project we want to extend our knowledge of these systems to develop effective control measures to control these pests in organic crops. The focus will be on the strawberry blossom weevil, the European tarnish plant bug and the raspberry beetle. |

The six products, Armicarb, Vitisan, lime sulphur, Caso, Calce Fiocco and Ulmasud were tested for their ability to control downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in order to find effective alternatives to copper, a heavy metal that is commonly used as a fungicide in organic viticulture. Each product was applied to potted grapevines at i) 40°h (degree hours) and ii) 80°h after inoculation (ai) of the pathogen. These so-called stop-sprays were tested on plants that received two different P. viticola inoculum rates. The formulated potassium bicarbonate product Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence and severity similar to or better than the copper hydroxide treatment. Armicarb and lime sulphur reduced disease incidence... |

Novel organic fungicides and elicitors against downy mildew on grapevines were evaluated on grapevine seedlings in a series of indoor screening experiments under controlled conditions and, if they have shown a good efficacy indoors, in a screening vineyard under field conditions. From 39 products tested under controlled conditions 10 were further examined under field conditions. All of the new products tested under field conditions showed at least partial efficacy. However, the efficacy was not good enough to protect grapevine plants sufficiently from downy mildew. For a complete re-placement of copper in plant protection against downy mildew on grapevine in organic agriculture, additional new products are needed. |

Abstract – Seed-borne diseases are increasingly becoming important in organic farming, therefore effective seed treatment methods are urgently needed. Physical methods have efficacy against a number of seed-borne pathogens, but may have adverse effects if applied at too high intensity. Thermal treatment in water has the widest application. To control the loose smuts of wheat and barley it is still the only available non-chemical sanitation method. Other physical treatment methods with practical relevance in cereals are hot humid air and electron treatment. Hot water treatment is also known to control different seed-borne pathogens of vegetables. Various preparations of microorganisms, plant extracts and other agents of natural origin have been and are... |

Entomopathogenic nematodes are often found naturally infecting codling moth larvae. The effect of an autumn treatment with S. feltiae on the fruit damage in the following summer was evaluated by treating 4 different apple orchards in October 2004 and 2005 at application rates of 3.75; 2 and 1.5 billion nematodes in 4000 l / ha. In three of the treated orchards, one treated with 3.75x109 nematodes/ha the other two treated with 2e9 nematode/ha, reduction in fruit damage was around 50%. In the most heavily infested orchard, which was treated with 1.5x109 nematode/ha only 33% reduction in fruit damage was achieved. Compared to previous studies, this was the first assessing the effect on the fruit damage in the summer following the treatment rather than... |

We have studied the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from young strawberry plants, cultivars Polka and Honeoye, after feeding by several strawberry herbivores under laboratory conditions. VOC profile of strawberry plants is highly dominated by green leaf volatiles (GLVs), which are released also due to mechanical damage. Our results reveal that strawberry has potential for inducible VOC defence, and this encourages testing the attractiveness of these strawberry VOCs to predatory mites. |

Organic plant protection can be supported by diagnostic aids for pest organisms. A concept for a user-friendly, scientifically founded diagnostic aid for agriculturally relevant pest organisms is presented, which is based on a flexible filter structure and conclusive images. To provide practical information on biology and regulation options along with the diagnosis, recent scientific results and market availability of regulation options in organic farming are being reviewed. The on-going research and transfer project has launched the first section on storage pests in 2016 at: www.oekolandbau.de/erzeuger/pflanzenbau/allgemeiner-pflanzenbau/pflanzenschutz |

During the last years damage caused by plant parasitic nematodes in organic field vegetable farming has been observed with increasing attention. A general inquiry was started on farms with nematode problems to collect information about infestation, crop rotation and control strategies. Soil samples from 207 vegetable fields were taken from 55 farms in Germany and the detected nematodes were analysed. Seventeen different genera of plant parasitic nematodes were found. Nematodes of the genus Pratylenchus were found on 90 % of Meloidogyne on 50 % of the analysed fields - these two are the most important genera that damage vegetables. More than half of the infested fields were of sandy soils. Yield reductions of 50 % could be observed on 40 % of the fields... |

In an attempt to evaluate the occurrence and economic importance of plant-parasitic nematodes in organic farming in Germany, a survey was conducted with the main emphasis on vegetable and cereal production systems. For vegetables, the survey included quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil samples and a questionnaire for growers querying production factors and damage levels. For cereals, the survey focused on quantification and identification of plant-parasitic nematodes in soil and plant samples. Overall, Pratylenchus and Tylenchorhynchus were the most prominent nematode genera under both production systems with an incidence of over 90% of the samples. Meloidogyne was detected in 51% of the samples in both systems. Other... |

Thinning trials with lime sulphur in comparison to other products were carried out for 4 years in an ‘Elstar orchard’ at the OVB Jork in Northern Germany. Beside the yield, the influence on fruit size, colour, russet-ting and return bloom of treated trees were observed. Mechanic thinning was too strong and had other negative effects. Thinning with potato meal and coconut soap had no effect. Organic oil (Telmion) reduced the yield between 0 and 20%. Lime sulphur reduced the yield 0 – 40% in comparison of the concentration and the number of applications. There were great fluctuations from year to year. In conclusion lime sulphur gives the best results, but the variation from year to year is not acceptable for a practical advising in the northern area of... |
